Vinland Saga: Two Paths (2023)

Carve that encounter into me.
13 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Nah nah nah what. What? Seriously, what? I've only ever written two individual episode reviews before but this episode moved me in ways I could have never imagined so here we are. Just to acknowledge the animation real quick- almost every single frame of this episode looked like a wallpaper. Seriously breathtaking direction, coloring, etc. Pretty much the entire season so far has been phenomenal visually but this episode and the last have just felt like wow man. The animation alone leaves me at a loss for words but as for the actual plot developments and character interactions ...

Of course, there's the conclusion of Thorfinn and Canute's conversation about peace and the prospects of creating a future utopia for the world to live in. Canute acknowledging Thorfinn's beauty. Thorfinn acknowledging that the wisest choice would be not to escape but to run away. To Vinland. Thorfinn and Einar's moment in front of Arnheid's grave. Thorfinn's voice acting. Their handshake as brothers. The sky changing colors and the birds soaring and ships sailing. It's so good. Olmar's confession of admiration to Thorfinn. Snake finally telling them his real name out of respect as they depart from Ketil's farm. And finally, the little montage that ensues is so fitting. The farmhands continue farming, Pater visits the late Arnheid, and the short "carve" speech plays in between as a wonderful way to conclude the Farmland Saga.

Two Paths is beautiful on all accounts. Thank you Yukimura and thank you Mappa.

Thors would be proud.

Chainsaw Man: Gunfire (2022)
Season 1, Episode 8
9/10
And we're only scratching the surface ...
3 December 2022
Would give this a 9.5 if I could, and I really was not expecting the episode to be as good as it was. These chapters of the manga were good but Mappa's artistic direction elevated them to another level so well it's impressive.

It would take too long to praise all of the great moments that occurred throughout this episode in a single review. So, I would just like to recognize how genius Mappa is for choosing to split the episode into the first calm, slice of life type half and then decide to suddenly switch gears abruptly into something much more sinister and dramatic in the second half. Despite that first half being calm and much less eventful, I really do feel it made the episode a little bit better just because it allowed the second half to seem that much more chaotic.

The episode is already rated a 9.6 on here and as a manga reader I'm just gonna assume IMDb is gonna have to let their ratings go past 10 once future episodes get adapted because this one was only scratching the surface of what's to come. Seriously, this episode isn't even gonna be anywhere near a top 10 episode of the show by the time the entire manga gets animated (which it hopefully does).

Really good episode though. Praise Mappa - they're going so incredibly hard with the animation for no reason.

Monster: Namae no nai kaibutsu (2005)
Season 1, Episode 37

AMAZING
4 February 2021
When the best episode of the anime so far is exactly at it's midpoint >>> But honestly the tension, anticipation, and buildup to the events that took place in this episode were crazy to say the least. Personally, I was on the edge of my seat half the time, barely able to watch what was happening. After this episode I can 100% confirm Johan Liebert as one of my favorite antagonists of all time. Just overall an amazing episode and I'm only halfway through the show!!!

Hunter x Hunter: The Word × Is × You (2014)

Criminally underrated
3 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Why is there only one review under this episode?? The last 5 minutes or so are some of the best in the show, just like episodes 131 and 135. Not only do we see the true and final development of Meruem's character from Ant King to Human, but we also see Welfin (who's criminally underrated) go through both such great physical and mental changes. The moment he whispers Komugi's name to King never fails to give me chills, and it is still one of my favorite moments throughout the entire arc. The way the violin comes sweeping in, the King's memory of the girl revived, and Pouf's shocked reaction. Also, Pouf's last moments are seen in this episode as his death is revealed in the next, and I just wanna say the way he went out was both incredibly sad but fitting. He lost his ways trying to prove his loyalty to his self created version of the King, and failed to see Meruem's true fate ... all 3 characters were some of my favorites throughout the show.

Hunter x Hunter: Anger × and × Light (2014)
Season 1, Episode 131

One of my fav TV episodes of all time
9 January 2021
I haven't seen too many tv shows but of all of the ones I have seen, including other anime, this episode is by far my favorite. Hunter x Hunter episode 131. What can I say? It's pretty much flawless to me. Everything from the climactic buildup to the music to the dialogue to the animation all blow me away every time I watch this episode. There is a specific scene between Gon, Killua, and Pitou near the end of the episode that gives me chills and leaves me in awe every time I watch it. I'm truly glad I was able to witness this masterpiece of an episode and amazing show in general.
