The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian (2022)
So good!! But...why can't the rest of the series be shown this level of love?
I don't understand why this episode can have such amazing sets, action, and story while Boba's episodes feel half-baked. He's a OG, fan-favorite character but is getting stiffed and outshone in his own show by Mando. Boba deserves more than what we've seen episode 1-4, seeing what they were able to accomplish in this episode. How many millions if not billions of dollars were earned for the Star Wars franchise because of this character??? My hope is that Mando and Boba's stories will continue to co-evolve together and this series won't be close to the end of Boba's storyline.
Star Wars: Visions: Akakiri (2021)
Hm. Very mixed feelings.
I liked the animation style...most of the time. And the voice acting was pretty nice. But the story kept getting jerked here and there, and by the end I was left feeling like I hadn't experienced a short film so much as I had just gone through a fever dream. Personally the ending was especially insulting to me as a Star Wars fan, since this rando Jedi was able to achieve what freakin Anakin Skywalker couldn't. I tried to see these stories as standalone, but in this one case I'm gonna have to voice my disdain for this being a rushed knockoff of Anakin's fall. The animation and sound design are the only reason I'm giving this as high as a 5/10.
Star Wars: Visions: Lop & Ochô (2021)
Kinda weird, I guess I liked it though?
This episode had a pretty "wacky" cast of characters that was fun to watch, but kind of pulled me out of the "Star Wars" feel as I was watching. I personally wasn't a fan of the "Jedi" revelation toward the end since I was getting tired of that from all the other episodes, and Lop getting force powers all of a sudden was giving me "Rey" vibes, for better or worse. The animation was top-notch in this episode though!
Star Wars: Visions: The Elder (2021)
Great, but feels like it's missing something
I enjoyed the episode a lot. I feel like this is similar to pre-episode I Obi-wan and Qui-Gon. The villain was a little too "wacky" for my taste but dang that was some good animation during the fights. It felt more like a pilot episode than a standalone thing though, it seems like there's a lot that the creator(s) wanted to do with these characters but was limited. I would've liked for this episode to push the envelope a little further with the violence/trauma experienced by the characters. That probably sounds messed up but I feel like if you've seen the episode then you thought/hoped this would've been "darker" than it ended up being.
Star Wars: Visions: T0-B1 (2021)
Not bad. You gotta admit there's some good stuff here
This episode immediately sticks out like a sore thumb when compared to the others...but once I got over the "childish" animation I got to appreciate this somewhat. The idea of trying to restore life in a barren world is pretty interesting, especially when considering the state of Mandalore post-ROTJ. The idea of a droid being a "Jedi" is also interesting...not that I think it should be canon or anything, but the oppression of droids in Star Wars is a theme that could use some more stories. I also appreciated that this episode wasn't afraid to go dark with the professor's death.
I wouldn't say this is a great or even "good" episode, but it's worth a watch. 6.5/10.
Star Wars: Visions: The Ninth Jedi (2021)
Really REALLY good!
This story felt the most..."comprehensive" I guess? Like there was a lot that happened but I never felt lost. I especially give it credit for distancing itself from the film eras and doing its own thing. Visuals as usual were amazing, and DANG that story had me on quite a ride and took some unexpected turns that I really enjoyed. I'm tempted to give this a 10, to be honest, but although the twist ending was cool, it did feel a little rushed. But still, this is some dang good work!
Star Wars: Visions: The Village Bride (2021)
Visuals, sound, story, everything was excellent!
This was undoubtedly my favorite episode. Not only did it fit into the Star Wars universe I know and love so well, but on it's own merit the narrative and characters were fleshed out well despite the short runtime. The visuals and sound design really engrossed me in the story and world. The story wasn't anything too crazy, but that helped, because it felt a lot like a standalone episode in The Clone Wars where there is solid focus on telling a specific tale, while alluding to some mystery that could be elaborated on in the future.
If I have one small criticism, it's that the "I am a Jedi" moment felt a little cliché and not quite earned.
Star Wars: Visions: The Twins (2021)
Great visuals. Don't like the story...at all really
The animation was a joy to behold in this, but the experience kept getting put off by the messy story. Putting aside the insane lore-breaking in this...the story of the twins themselves seemed really rushed and out of focus. I think they had an interesting idea but the short runtime hurt the narrative a lot in this one.
Star Wars: Visions: Tatooine Rhapsody (2021)
Not my cup of tea
The story was bizarre and the visuals weren't my favorite either. The songs especially seemed out of place. I guess it was unique at least. Nice to hear more of Tem as Boba!
Star Wars: Visions: The Duel (2021)
Fantastic visuals
This was a good episode to kick it off. It looks phenomenal and helped set the tone for the rest of the series, in my opinion. The story was pretty average, though.
Star Wars: Visions (2021)
Mixed feelings overall, but I enjoyed my time.
There's stuff to love and not love about this series, but if you come into it with an open mind and disregard the canon/lore, you'll have a good time.
The "good":
-THE ANIMATION. Since there's several studios that worked on this project, there's a range of visual styles, but I'd say all of them look phenomenal
-Sound design and voice acting are generally very good and help draw you in
-A couple of these episodes have really compelling stories that leave you wanting more ("The Village Bride" was my personal favorite)
The "bad"
-All (and I mean ALL) of these stories are "jedi" stories. Now, if you come to Star Wars just for lightsabers and the force, then this probably won't be an issue for you...but I like my bounty hunters and troopers too, and I would've liked to see at least one episode that didn't have Jedi as the protagonist and/or the main focus of the episode. This also results in a lot of episodes hitting the same story beats, unfortunately.
-Somewhat related to the last point, but more than half of these episodes had stories that were average at best.
-It's anime, so they're gonna do a lot to push or break the boundaries of the canon universe. I'm a Star Wars lore junkie, so I found myself constantly reminding myself "don't worry about it, it's not canon".
7.5/10.
Boku no hîrô akademia: Victory or Defeat (2017)
Anime Bulls**t at it's finest
Why would Deku's predecessors care if he won a tournament or not? Deku was even warned and he keeps acting reckless despite never getting any consequences. He deserved to lose even if the show keeps trying to make me think otherwise. I can't wait to see what other predictable anime bs happens to help him keep winning.
Hilda (2018)
A creative ride full of wonder
This series caught my eye with its art-style, and soon the storytelling and characters had pulled me into this incredibly creative world! Often, shows like this have growing pains early on but this show seems to begin very familiar and confident with this world. Hilda is a series of independent adventures, each one different from the last and with its own unique ideas. However, there's a very interesting overarching narrative that's told...the one thing I wish is that the show more often took significant leaps forward in this narrative, but I suppose it's just not the way the showrunner(s) want to tell the story. Even still, I never find myself disappointed with any episodes; it is a constant delight to watch!
Primal: Plague of Madness (2020)
A horrifying and tragic depiction of disease in Nature
I don't understand how they do it but every single episode has been a masterpiece, and this is no exception. The monster design is horrifyingly amazing and when paired with the stellar animation creates something truly remarkable. The ending of this episode really caught me off guard with how emotional it was
