As many have already stated: give it time. You will watch the first episode and will think what kinda "hunger games meet glee" bs is this. The truth is that the first episodes are truly the low point here. The series are beautifully diverse, not only from the point of race, but also has a great range of privilege, opinions, sexualities and equally represents both genders. It has a great play on character development, letting them explore the consequences of their actions and letting them figure out right from wrong and setting their own standards for that.

While I understand why the show puts such an emphasis on hip hop, i think they wasted a great opportunity to explore more of the archive. I mean, the show is set 400 years in the future - meaning all the genres of arts from the past, such as, 20th and 21st century feel equally in the past for them. So where am I going with this? Characters could have used slang from the thirties as much as from 2010's, the fashion could have been as much inspired from nineties as from the roaring twenties. While I understand that ballroom would have been hard to incorporate, there are a sort of lack of genres of that were explored. I'm not saying that all of them should have been explored, but even the diversity from the modern century was fairly limited
