Casino Royale (2006)
Best Bond Ever!
I, like others, was rather hesitant to embrace Daniel Craig when his casting was first announced. Let me be the first to admit my error -- this man is sexy as hell and the most -- dare I say it -- MANLY Bond ever. Not macho, but a Real Man: one who considers his actions, sometimes with remorse but always with bravery and intelligence. Craig has screen presence like no other Bond before him. This is not Connery's dapper dandy or Moore's misogynistic male, but an altogether new creature. And,oh, those eyes!
Open note to Daniel Craig: if a pair of panties ever come sailing at your head...they'll probably be mine.
The Love Letter (1999)
SPOILER: Beyond Unbelievable
First of all, Blythe Danner doesn't look anywhere NEAR old enough to play Capshaw's daughter (and in fact she isn't -- only ten years apart).
I understand this is supposed to be one of those magical, Moonstruck type supernatural romances but this is beyond the pale. Very, very weak in terms of acting, script and direction.
The only one who really shines here is Ellen DeGeneres, who makes this film watchable -- if not really believable herself as she's cast as a bit of a heterosexual sex hound. But endearing nonetheless. Actually, DeGeneres and the skin shots of the young guy Capshaw dallies with together make this watchable. But no one can really tell if Capshaw is really in love with the young guy or not; neither the script nor her acting pull it together for us and we're left to wonder how she really feels.
The Chocolate War (1988)
*Spoilers*
I respectfully disagree with the reviewer who said that "he (Jerry Renault) doesn't win in the end anyway." This was a moral battle -- Jerry Renault represented conscience moral choice fighting against the Vigils' frantic need to keep the corrupt but popular status quo. Jerry's will won... he did not sell chocolates. Other viewers may miss this important point: this story is not about "winning." This story is about the price we pay in order to do what is right. Cormier's story says living according to our own conscience often has a steep price -- but that it is a price infinitely worth paying.
Kingpin (2003)
Great story, tight editing, outstanding acting.
I didn't want to watch it, but my husband insisted. I hate "The Sopranos" and all violent films/television. Why did I like this then, you ask? Because this was an exceptional production, and I hope they will do a series. The acting was incredible, big-screen quality. The child who played Cadenas' son was the best child actor I've seen.
