Does this not remind you of...

Battle Beyond the Stars? That one had more charm. This one shows just another small female warrior wiping out a bunch of men who are twice her size and number. Enough already. Whatever happened to the capable male warrior? Thankfully, Braveheart won big at the Oscars as it brought back the real man, as we have been subjected to the many clones of Ellen Ripley. Still, the story is simple in the David versus Goliath style. But enough of trained uniform soliders falling prey to a bunch of simpletons. Yes, there was the Viet Nam War, but by know you should know what to do and what to avoid. Clear? Peace always.

How on earth could anyone watch this movie, let alone make it
19 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Good grief, I've never seen such a bloodbath. I mean, I've seen gory films before, but not like this. Overkill. Did that girl in the bedroom deserve such a brutal faith? This makes Megan is Missing look like apple pie. The most disturbing piece of filmmaking I've seen since Tusk. If you are squeamish, avoid this one. I thought Hostel was bad, but this one was beyond the limit. There's a reason I will never see another Hellraiser film, and this puppy took it to the nth degree. It may be rather shuddering to think what part 3 will be like! Will this clown keep coming back, like Jason and Freddy? For me, I hope not. Ugh.

A Fine Creature Feature
8 July 2022
So wrote a noted Canadian film critic upont its reliease, and I agree with him. A worthy sequel that stands on its own, though it briefly mentions that there were survivors from the original. Sure, Arnold isn't it, but there's no need for him to be; the movie holds up quite good on its own. I've never seen a bad Predator film, and though the suspense of the 1987 effort was never duplicated, the sequels that followed were no let downs. And BION - believe it or not - same film critic rated this three stars as opposed to Godfather Part III, which was rated two stars. That is an incredible feat. A gem, as another local picture described it. Sure, not everyone is a fan of the excessive foul language, but that's Hollywood for you. Best part there? The penthouse scene. You are ALWAYS being watched.

Did all these take place in a parallel universe?
25 July 2021
I think so. First of all, the names. Do you know anyone named Plutarch, Prim, or even Katniss?

I just watched all four films and they improved with age. But no way did this story take place on planet Earth.

I give up.
23 June 2021
D Day Lewis is a good actor, but his films are just... Lincoln was only slightly interesting, and this one is just not my cuppa tea. 'I drink your milkshake', whatever that means. 'I see dead people' has more relevance. A movie like this is to be passed on if one wants something more thrilling. You drink my milkshake? Are you nuts? Have you any idea how unhealthy it could be? Goodbye, Daniel.

I think the ending was a nod or answer to the ending of Inception
15 June 2021
At the end of Inception, if you remember, the top keeps spinning... and that's the end. Here, I believe the filmmakers decided to have some fun and showed us two alternate endings - one that is infrutirating if you watch the whole thing, and one that is satisfying if you hit the pause button before one of the characters - you know. I am talking about the cemetary scene. Take your pick. I thought it was the best film of 2020. And that girl who played the lead villain was just smokin'.

For the first time, I found it suspenseful.
8 December 2020
I've seen them all... None had me prepped for this. I was expecting just another sequel, remake, reboot, reset, re-imagining, re-ANYTHING of yet another extended series, but the sight of the picture of a young M Myers in the lecture hall along with that moment where he terrorizes that poor young lass in the kitchen... It was like having Andre the Giant two decades younger and several stone lighter chase you in the ring... Some other kind folks may prefer the original or a different version, but I'm one of those who are more into something more modern... This is my cup of tea. For some reason, it struck a note with me. Well done.

My favourite of them all
25 July 2020
Pretty straightforward, simple, and effective on the scares. To me, it is the best remake of any Japanese horror until Pulse, which was a remake of the Japanese orginal, Kairo. This one is scarier, bloodier, and sleeker than the original, which I found campy at times. Hollywood has yet to top this remake. Even the poster kicks ass. Good poster means a good film.

Not bad, but M Mann should've have used the original cast
30 June 2020
I remember when S Spielberg made the unsatisfactory Hook. When Ebert reviewed it, he asked, Why didn't Steven just MAKE Peter Pan? Same here. Mr Mann should have brought back the original actors with their ubercool wardrobes and started from there. There was something missing here. Mr Mann, please bring us something familiar next time. Heat forever.

Interesting but very inaccurate to the point that it's sacrilegious.
7 April 2020
Anyone familiar with commentaries on the Scripture - and I'm talking Jewish commentators who were sages from centuries ago - will find this movie entertaining at best and inaccurate at worst. There are many discrepancies, but I will list ten.

The Ten Inaccuracies.

Moses KNEW he was Hebrew, he always did. He knew very well who his family members were, and was not stranger to them.

Moses NEVER demoted himself and worked as a slave.

Moses was not familiar with the Egyptian princess.

Moses was not driven out of Egypt, he escaped it after being betrayed by Dathan and Aviram.

Aaron did NOT offer incense to the golden calf.

Joshua did NOT escape from Egypt. He left together with the Israelites.

Not one of the Israelite women danced around the calf; only the men from the 'mixed multitude' did so.

The two tablets of the Ten Commandments were not hewn in stone but in sapphire brick.

Moses did not hurl the tablets onto the golden calf; he cast them to the earth and had the calf ground to dust.

The plague of darkness was so dark that no one could see another person; this was true only with the Egyptian populace.

I wasn't expecting much and -
7 April 2020
Well, what can I say, I liked it! So what if it took place during a wedding, at least it wasn't set inside a building. What I found odd was that the priest was able to neutralise the infected by uttering Psalms, which is fine, but how they were able to stop what they were doing remains mysterious. A rather tragic story made watchable by the interesting acting from its two leads, especially that of Leticia Dolera, who played the bride so driven to survive and look for her husband. What's good about it is that it's not a sequel or a prequel, but a parallel film that happens concurrently with the original REC. That one was good, REC 2 has faded from memory, and REC 4 was forgettable, but there was something about this. Think From Dusk 'til Dawn in broad daylight. If you don't want to watch it, fine. Borrow a DVD instead.

Woody. Make more films like this one.
2 April 2020
Being in the SE Asian region, not all films from the US find their way to the local cinemas, hence the DVD rental stores. I rented this - the black and white poster alone got me, but I had no idea what I was going to watch. Not even close to, say, Annie Hall, Sleeper, NY Stories, and Husbands and Wives, this was surprisingly intense suspenseful. For a few times I had to hit the pause button just to walk around and let my pulse calm down, I kid you not. Never have I been so unnerved by a film since perhaps Ringu. Woody should move into this territory more often. For those who are looking for Scarlett's talents other than the oft-repeated Black Widow, go to this one and watch her without the CGI. Her male counterpart, Jonathan Rhys Myers, holds his own, Emily Mortimer is a treat, and any movie with Brian Cox in it can't be that bad.

'You came here to look at me.'

Think Sid and Nancy without the drugs
29 March 2020
Woman and man meet, they like each other, and they move in together. Man is bitter over his domineering dad and bum knee, while woman is quick to get over things and struggling to be cleansed. They go on a spiral of paranoia, a complete disregard of time and the outside world to their detriment. Are there such people in this world? If yes, then may they be rescued. At least they weren't preaching their 'gospel' to others. The fact that they kept to themselves shows that they had a bit of respect for their fellow humans. Quirky, but overall, not a big kick.

Too much singin'
30 November 2019
I kinda liked the original, and the animation here is superb. In fact, never have cartoon females looked so good! Now, I will say this - too many songs spoil a film, and at times I was rolling my eyes as another character opened up for a tune. I mean, focus on the story. It made a bit of sense, but it needed more weight. At least we get to see how Elsa's feet looked like!

A little bit too dark - literally - at times
3 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is the most interesting Terminator film in a while, I must say, and had Terminator 2 not been made, the new villain here is the most impressive badass piece of work since Darth Maul. But first, let's clear the table.

1. To make sense, just pretend that you've seen only the first two Terminator films, and then attach this one to them.

2. Some of the action films take place at night, making it difficult at times to tell what is going on.

3. The Ah-nold Terminator is... If you thought the one in part 2 was a good guy, then this one here is a NICE guy... I cannot imagine Darth Maul doing something like raising a family, for example.

4. Someone once wrote that the new Star Wars films have become a feminist shriek-fest. Same here. No terminator should be bossed around by anyone.

Those said, even the enhanced female version of Reese is a huge improvement on her original male counterpart. I wonder, what will they think of next? A teen cyborg killer? A child? Or... well, as I always say, I can't wait for the movie. Thank you, Preston and Child, for that quote in your excellent novel The Ice Limit.

How's your face, Grace
28 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
There once was a girl named Grace.

A blonde with a pretty face.

She married a guy, quiet, kind, and shy, and the wedding day quickened its pace.

It turns out, you see, that the family tree is messed up from eons ago.

They sealed with Say-tan, they selected a peon, and sacrificed with screams loud and raw.

The night she was wed, her joy turned to dread as she played the game hide and seek.

Smiles turned to leers, joy turned to tears, and turned many a strong from the weak.

They'd hunt her all night, her heart filled with fright, as bullets and blades passed her by.

She finally found out what the game was about, and wanted to divorce the guy.

They had until dawn when the sun hit the lawn her life would be spared ever more.

But payback is here.

Not next, but this year as it was time to end this lore.

So, what happens next?

She can't call, she can't text, and her phone is nowhere to be seen This movie kicks ass blood and bullets, they blast, and justice spares not even the teen.

How It Ends (2018)

Will there be a sequel?
15 December 2018
Many have commented on the so-called ending... Perhaps that was indeed the ending? I remember there used to be films with ambiguous endings until they went out of style in the 1960s. Is this part one of a trilogy? Remember, LOTR had us hanging. Perhaps this is one of those films, and we have yet to see the end of it. Let's hope so.

Same old, same old...
28 October 2018
This one had a good cast, sure, but... Well, the word 'but' changes everything, doesn't it. While watching it, I was thinking, why not kill both leads - Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. Wipe 'em both out and let's get this buried once and for all. Admittedly, I'm not a fan of the original, either. Let's just say that the Rob Zombie version of 2007 was THE one for me, more my slice of cake, especially during the kitchen scene. Poor Danielle Harris. Memo to the Carpenters: End it here. Move on. Happy scare day.

The ultimate slow burn suspense film so far
22 October 2018
The scariest part is somewhere near the middle, but you won't forget it. Or, depending on you, it could be shortly after it starts and not long before it ends... It's incredible how someone could even THINK of a story like this, let alone make a film out of it. 'Forever... Death was... eternal... loneliness...' Makes a ghost look creepy without being gory, and that's the beauty of it. Check it out. And whatever you do, do NOT press that link which says, Do You Want To Meet A Ghost? No, thank you.

Stop the usual cliches, please.
13 October 2018
1. Stop setting key scenes in dark places where it is difficult to tell what is going on.

2. For the same reason, stop shooting outdoors at night time as well, it has gotten boring.

3. Shoot more scenes during daytime and in well lit rooms so we can see what is happening.

4. Enough, enough, ENOUGH of the jump scares and the BANG that accompanies them.

5. Make a simple yet effective plot.

6. Not too much music, let the suspense speak for itself.

Predictable, recycled, and not that bad.
18 September 2018
Predictable - we all know what happens in the end.

Recycled - we've seen this before; think The Truth About Cats and Dogs.

Not that bad - not the best movie, and not the worst. Worth watching.

Forget the sequels
8 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Parts 2 and 3 combined don't add up to any give ten minutes of this film. While not very scary, it IS very well made, and the acting holds up strong. The casualties may be a bit over the top, but some people here get what is coming to them, as one would expect from a horror film.

Not for everyone...
14 April 2018
What the hell was this, I didn't like it then, and don't like it now... The best part was seeing those girl shred off their stockings, but after that, the film evaporated into a most unsatisfying second half that is totally forgettable... Didn't like it then, don't like it now, and I won't like it tomorrow.

Silence of the Clams
12 July 2017
Sorry, but... I'm with Gene Siskel on this one, though I didn't dislike it as much. It was a rather well acted film, but the glowing reviews made me expect too much... When I sat down in the cinema, I said, 'Scare me.' The movie went along. I said, 'Scare me.' The climax came. 'Scare me.' The movie was about to end. 'Scare me.' And then it was over. I didn't find it scary at all... I mean... Boyz In The Hood should've won the Best Picture Oscar... That one had a heart. This one... It's not the worst film, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

'Dream much, Will?'
