Dune (2021)
Not just a film, but an experience 💫
When Dune was announced, and I heard Dennis Villeneuve was directing it, I was excited and on cloud nine. I even travelled a long way to watch the movie as it wasn't screened in theatres that were near me. I was hyped and thrilled to such an extent that wanted to see the movie that bad. The novel (which I haven't read, but am about to) is supposed to be super-rich and immersive (the work of Frank Herbert), the characteristics that the movie too inherits. The first thing that will amaze you is the sheer scale and grandeur that the movie presents right from the first shot. Everything from the costumes to the location and the props are really well thought out and kudos to the Set Production team for giving us this kind of an experience. If I could say that the production is a strong pillar of the movie, then the Background Score and Cinematography add to the encounter. Hans Zimmer delivers his best score after Interstellar, hands down. Greig Fraser proves once and again thay he is one of the ELITE cameramen out there and he definitely deserves more praise and fame. Coming to the leader of the pack, Dennis Villeneuve, once again proves us that he has nailed down the perfect method to treat the audience to a Science Fiction adventure. The cast, played by Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Issac, Rebecca Fergusson and many others. Oscar Issac and Chalamet were the standout performers for me as they spoke to the audience with just their emotions and were in complete sync with their characters. Rebecca Fergusson also did really well and Dennis has once again nailed it with the casting, as well. The story is and screenplay is definitely slow and sluggish and is a let down to audiences that came in looking for a complete movie. But, the movies spends a considerable amount of time in World Building and this makes the movie feel as though we the audience, are travelling with the characters as well as they explore and react. The story is left in a cliffhanger kind of situation with the main twists and turns about to come out in the second installment of the movie. To complete, the movie just nails the technical parts and is a little disappointing in the storyline. It sure makes up for the let down by its magnificence and splendidness. My point at last is *DUNE IS NOT JUST A FILM, IT'S AN EXPERIENCE*
Gisaengchung (2019)
Sheer Class and Brilliance !
If you are wondering how the hell did a Korean Film win the Best Picture award at the Oscars, your doubts will all be cleared after watching the film just once ! The perfect mixture of all departments gives us a picture, strong both in narrative and filmmaking. The story touches upon the social lines between the poor and the rich and easily weaves it into the story. The production quality is top- notch and the actors do a really good job in conveying the emotions. This is a must watch for any cinephile and normal viewers alike.
Soorarai Pottru (2020)
Worth the Hype. Should have been released at the big screen.
You can achieve anything if you put your mind and soul to it, even when the whole world is against you. This is the idea that Sudha Kongara wants to tell to us with her recent outing Soorarai Pottru. Based on real stories, the film follows the protagonist's dream of making every common man fly. The film is held up by Suriya Sivakumar's real to life depiction of Nedumaaran Rajangam and the way he handles both emotional and dialogue based scenes are a treat to watch. He carries the whole film on his shoulders and does so well at it. The supporting cast (Paresh Rawal, Urvashi) are well picked and give support to the main lead but fail to do so at times. Aparna Balamurali portrays Bommi ,a similar character as Nedumaaran ,does her job fairly well. But the lead characters as a pair don't have that chemistry that you expect. Cinematography is excellent and editing is efficient even when the songs are not needed for the story ,is placed forcibly in the screenplay. Background score by GV Prakash Kumar gives that peppy and arrogant tone to the movie which elevates the experience by a mile. The details in the film are a plenty and brings the feel of that 1990-2000s vibe. The story is overall a very enjoyable experience but there are some instances in the film when you feel bored or not into what's happening on the screen. With the intent and story there, I would have liked a more complete product. The film has some issues with dubbing as the dialogues are in a strong Madurai- dialect. But if you are feeling low or is in the mood for a film with a strong core story , this one's a treat to watch.
