Girls: Home Birth (2015)
very enjoyable
I think this is one of the show's finest episodes. From the contrast between real and faux female independence and empowerment, with Shosh and Marnie taking charge of their careers without depends on men on one hand, and Caroline 's desire for a natural birth on the other.
Adam fainting after Jessa yells "Foot!" is the funniest part of the episode.
It was interesting how the male characters were used in this episode. At the head of both Shosh and Marnie's inspiration were men, one man if I wanted to push it. Marnie decided to sing alone after a talk with Ray, and Shosh took the Tokyo job after talking with Ray's older counterpart, who she met by accident, while looking for Ray.
I think Ray was mean while talking to Desi. And similarly about Jessa's "be a man" speech to Laird, although she probably meant something closer to "you're the only person capable of convincing Caroline to go to a hospital".
Star Trek: Voyager: Basics, Part I (1996)
Let's Save Da Baby
I was quite impressed with Janeway's decision making so far. "Deadlock", "Tuvix" and "Resolutions", show her as being mostly utilitarian. Sacrificing herself and others to do the most good. And I, a utilitarian, admired her and thought of her as a role model. In this episode, Janeway decides to try and save a baby, even though this would be an unlikely result. Chakotay himself says that "the safest thing is to continue on our journey." Janeway tells him that she and the whole crew are ready to give their lives for his child. I was disappointed. A few in-universe explanations include: guilt about Tuvix, worries that leaving the baby would result in problems later on, a romantic attachment to Chakotay, or valuing family much higher rate than I would. Out-universe, perhaps, different writers, or an attempt at "redeeming" Janeway by making her more deontological.
Otherwise the episode was entertaining.
Star Trek: Voyager: Deadlock (1996)
Janeway is the best Trek Captain
While the episode did stretch the limits of credibility and the techno-babble that explains it was sometimes amusing. Janeway's decision making, her ability to make tough utilitarian choices with little fuss is one of my favourite parts of the show and was wonderfully highlighted in this episode.
Angel: Harm's Way (2004)
Funniest episode in the BuffyVerse.
I didn't think of Harmony much, she is often used as a comic relief character but it's usually from a third person's pov. This episode changes that, it's funny and a great example of character building all from Harm's pov. The part about trying harder due to lacking a soul, Angel's apathy, the shoving in a closet, all great. This one is definitely rewatch material.
