Stardust (2007)
Wonderful, well paced escapism
This is beautifully cast, wonderfully made, a delight to watch. I felt that all the participants enjoyed themselves as much as I did as a viewer, from villains to heroes to comic cameos. I had heard mixed reviews, but was ready to suspend belief.
I had not realised how well the humour would be crafted. Some of the characters were predictable while others stood out as a remarkable surprise. In particular I enjoyed Robert de Nero; far more of a surprise than I had anticipated. I think I will enjoy watching this again, a comment I can rarely make with certainty.
I should have guessed that Neil Gaiman would have created such a wonderful world.
Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of 'The War of the Worlds' (2006)
Outstanding
This was a voyage of nostalgia and how I wish I could have attended one of the live concerts. Instead I settled for a home cinema experience that blew my mind. When we first bought the album, my husband and I had not been married long. My children have grown up with and love it as much as we do and we really loved the experience so much that we watched it two nights running. Fantastic! I recommend this for anyone to watch. You will not regret the experience. If you can, see it on a large screen surround sound and imagine that you are in the audience. I don't think I've ever seen a conductor enjoy himself as much as Jeff Wayne. Well done to all.
Jane Eyre (2006)
A superb adaptation
The interpretation, adaptation and production was outstanding. I had clear empathy with the characters and the passion of the story shone through. I have not enjoyed a Bronte story so much on film for many years.
Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens were ideally cast both in acting and appearance. Ruth's striking appearance was ably dealt with in order to suggest the 'plain Jane' of the story and she lent weight to a character that is well known to many readers.
Costume was excellent with a real feel for what I believe to be likely attire for the period. The climate was sadly all too appropriate for the region.
