La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (1998)
One simple story
This movie is not great. It's a simple movie, with a simple story and a simple main character - and thats what makes this film so good. It wasn't made to be great and big; it just want to tell the story of a man who was left behind and raised in the Ocean. He never set foot on land and that's the only thing that makes him special. That and all its consequences. Visually the movie is beautiful and its a proof that special effects have nothing to do with a beautiful image - they are beautiful because you feel it. And it's a story that will make you want to meet the main character in person. The ending is wonderful and it's very well put (so hard to find a good ending these days). Tim Roth is excellent as 1900, but the two biggest actors in this movie are the "ship" and the "ocean". Both seem to have a life of their own. This is not only a movie that is worth to watch, it's a movie everybody should watch - it's the living proof that a movie doesn't have to be great to be good. In fact, it can be excellent. One last thing - the title in English is not quite beautiful as the original Italian one.
Trois couleurs: Rouge (1994)
Truly amazing
This movie is not only about feelings and human emotions, it is also about everything that could be but it's not. Poetry in movies can be awfully boring and annoying, but this movie is delightful to be watched. Not to mention the amazing Irène Jacob, a great actress in France - one of the best, actually. When the movie ends, you can only feel sorry. After all, when something is truly great, we want more (Well, for another great movie by K Kieslowsky with Irène Jacob we can always watch La double vie de Veronique)
Gosford Park (2001)
Great cast of actors for a great movie
Altman finally scores with this great movie not only about the upper and lower class, but also about human relations. Yes, it is a little bit slow, but when it ends you'll wish you had more time to watch those characters! Kristin Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren once again show why they are considered great actresses but the whole cast makes the movie one of the best reunion of actors. Forget the stars in "Ocean's Eleven", Gosford Park's actors are the REAL best group! In fact, Altman seems to know that his whole movie depends on the characters and so he casted only the best (even the pitifull Ryan Phillip seems to be a real actor in this movie!). It's worth it - but remember that this is an Altman movie and not for everyone.
Nuages: Lettres à mon fils (2001)
More than just clouds
When I first read about the movie, I was curious, but intrigued to learn how the director would use images of clouds to fill almost 90 minutes. To my big surprise, time is the last thing I noticed while I was watching it. The movie makes you go far from the room, it makes you dream and think, and imagine... And the images (not just clouds, despite the title) are nature in its most beautiful form. I was stunned by the movie. The letter may not be that impressive - could be any mother writing to any son, but they have their effect. It's not a movie for everyone, tho. If you think movie is an experience, more than anything else, you might as well watch it. If you don't like, it is worth the experience.
