Jesus: His Life (2019)
The History is Interesting
I liked that the scenes are interspersed by commentary from experts. I learned a lot. However, I just could not get past Mary Magdalene's mascara. Beautifully applied to enhance her eyes. But did they really wear Maybelline back in the day?
Bomb Girls (2012)
Bomb Girls is Explosive
I found this series by accident on Netflix. We are prone to watch "seasons of" over a few day span, so we gave it a look. Wow. My mother was a little too young to work the factories during WWII, but her older cousins worked at Oak Ridge. To her, they seemed worldly and relevant. In her little girl heart, she wanted to be just like them. She would have loved this show. One of the reviewers (jessicaburnie from Toronto) wondered if "Bomb Girls" would hold the interest of the average male viewer. I am not sure how "average" my hubby is, but when he realized that we had watched the last episode of the series, he went into mourning. I think he is not-so- secretly in love with Vera. Oh, well, we all have our dreams.
Gem Hunt (2013)
Gem Hunt ... wow
I turned on the TV and the first episode was on. I was ready to flip the channel and just never did. They were in Vietnam and the countryside, the jungles, and the mean streets looked just as my uncle described them to me years ago. Watching the trio (Ron, Bernie, and whats-her-name) negotiate clandestine money exchanges, deals for raw and cut stones, and watching them dodge the authorities and regulations is fascinating. On Tuesday's episode, they traveled across Ethiopia by jeep, donkey, and camel to find opals. They traveled through desolate areas and into a local market place to buy some beauties. I have been learning so much about jewels that my granddaughter is impressed with me and she works for Jewelry Television. Before the season ends, I will be an expert in geology and geography. Ron and Bernie, are middle-aged (being charitable there), chubby, ordinary characters whose eyes take on a holy glow when they see a prime gem. Bernie is like a sweet uncle and the producers need to show him more. At first, Ron was irritating, but he is growing on me. The gal is about as interesting as oatmeal. She needs to be replaced and then the show will be a "10". Can't wait for the emeralds on next Tuesday's show.
The Following (2013)
Well plotted
I love a good thriller. The first 2 episodes are well-plotted and well-played. Lot of potential. Kevin Bacon and Natalie Zea (I miss Winona on "Justified") know how to command a scene. You can feel their heat. James Purefoy exudes charisma. I would almost drink his kool-aid. I am a big fan of the "thriller"... books and movies. This one has me sitting on the edge of my seat and checking to make sure that my doors are all locked. I do have one small criticism or suggestion: The show could use some lighter moments or lighter characters. Not for contrast, but for shading. If that doesn't happen, it might get weighted down in the mundane. I am anxious to see where the writers are headed and I will definitely be tuning in every week.
The Galloping Gourmet (1968)
The Galloping Gourmet ... what a hoot!
A friend just called and said that they are re-running Graham Kerr's show on Food Netword. I am definitely going to check it out. I loved his humor. The first time I watched his show, I wasn't certain if he was a comedian or a chef. I later accepted that he was a master of both crafts. I am an old woman now, but I learned something from Graham Kerr that has served well for many years. After one of his infamous disasters at the stove, he glanced at the audience and said, "I meant to do that." I am a seamstress and have borrowed that phrase many times. Like him, I have celebrated the beauty of the finished product and laughed at the convoluted process that got me there. A toast to the fab Graham Kerr.
Raines (2007)
Raines psychiatrist
Who plays Raines' psychiatrist? She looks so familiar. I am really enjoying the show. It has yet to find its "stride", but the premise is interesting, the characters are great, and the story lines are good. I think the cadence will improve. The problem is that network TV does not promote shows the way TNT and USA do. Shows like "The Closer", "Monk", "Psyche", "The Dead Zone", "4400", etc. would have only been on network TV for a few episodes. "Medium" is the exception that proves the rule. Medium found enough audience early on to keep it going. Many shows are moved around and hidden till the viewers miss so many that they lose interest. I wonder if TV executives even watch television. Probably not. I bet they only read projections, demographics, and numbers. If they had even the slightest clue, their ratings would be better. But, they don't ask me,so they will likely remain clueless. Thanks, Grandma Gayle
