Welcome to Marwen (2018)
Tragically obnoxious
I like Mark's story. He seems interesting and I like the art that he creates. However, this movie does a terrible job of telling Mark's story. I think it's really tragic when a good story is ruined by bad storytelling.
Its biggest flaw by far is the complete lack of subtlety. Mr. Zemeckis feels the need to treat the audience like they have brain damage resulting from a hate crime by communicating the same ideas multiple times in the same way in rapid succession. The number of times the exact same line is repeated multiple times in a row just to make sure the audience got it the first time is just so embarrassing. The visual language is the same way, with written text and repeated shots taking up a substantial amount of screentime.
The CGI stuff was pretty embarrassing, too. The obvious part of that is how hideous it looked. The faces looked superimposed in the most uncanny way. All of the liquids looked amateurish, like a first-year animator class final project. The blood especially looked very "this was made in an instructional setting where it's about learning and not about creating something that actually looks good".
And a Wesleyan grievance I have is that the logic of the doll scenes is pretty stupid. There are a number of times where the dolls show self-awareness of the fact that they are dolls or use their doll features to their advantage. Does that mean that the Marwen story that Mark was creating was one with a bunch of dolls doing doll stuff as opposed to people during WWII doing WWII stuff? I suspect it was just Mr. Zemeckis trying to be smart, I'm obviously not a fan.
Maybe this story should've been told as a documentary. Oh wait, that was already done in 2010. Maybe I really just want it to be a Mr. Kaufman movie so that I can feel smart after watching it instead of feeling stupid.
Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated: Dance of the Undead (2013)
Ska will never die
I just love skanking with scoob. It's poetic that the ska band is undead, to show that ska's perception of a dead genre ignores its impact and perpetuity. Ska forever.
