Warrior (2019)
Love it, Hate it, It's just BRILLIANT
Possibly the best series at the moment, and it came with no hype.
It may not be to everyone's taste - it's violent, it's adult, it's devious, conniving, selfish, fast, ugly, funny, ruthless, loyal, corrupt, loving, greed, and many more vices simmering together in the festering cesspool of a politically putrid 1870s SanFrancisco.
As to the historical authenticity, I suspect it is more inspired by stories, characters, events and the climate of the time with a blend of the facts. This is entertainment, action and drama not historical reenactment. The writer describes is as told in a graphic novel style, and that is how it feels. That said, the action on the other hand is as real as you can stand and more.
The characters are both interesting and frustrating with backstories revealed, hinted at or stubbornly hidden, and likewise with their agendas and ambitions.
Think a blend of Peaky Blinders, WestWorld, Spartacus, Banshee, the best of martial arts movies.
By the time you've finished series 2, you'll be longing for several more.
A Bipolar Expedition (2010)
The Bipolar Bachelor
Caught this while channel-hopping on a very minor channel and curiosity got the better of me.
Docustory of a slightly forelorn looking 50 year old supposed businessman from Stratford who convinces 12 Ukrainian women to a rented castle destination in Jamaica for a 3 week holiday/bachelor wife hunt. However the real story is one of grandiose and slightly bizarre delusion as a result of his bipolar disorder coupled with the confusion of his Ukrainian guests. His past seems to have been golf champion/poker pro who now owns an old folks home. Far from the glamour of sunny Jamaica, he has a dowdy Stratford apartment he seems to share with his elderly parents,
The story quickly moves to the extent of his manic episodes which would appear to go beyond bipolar and the bemused/confused women never abroad before, who dont speak a word of English, still wondering what was the catch feigning interest in a feeble granduncle willing to pay for 3 weeks in paradise.
Vaguely interesting, with an amateur feel, it is remarkably unsleezy despite the premise. The women seem far more suited to the sun, sea and sand while he paces pastily around the hall just missing a floral straitjacket.
Despite some background and expert opinions interspersed it raises more questions than it answers. With this degree of instability how does he function in any normal life/business? How does an anonymous nondescript middle English man convince a dozen non English speaking statuesque Ukrainian women half his age en masse to Jamaica? Who is exploiting who?
And whose idea was the documentary?
I'm not sure you get any real answers or even a good insight in to a typical bipolar life, insomuch such as money buys. However it whiled away an hour and I suspect the thirteenth guest may have got the golden ticket
Blockers (2018)
Escaped (not released)
If you are looking for an escape this is it.
Escape from comedy, acting, script, jokes and pretty much anything you might vaguely expect of your average awkward parents/teen comedy..
Giant man baby, annoying and unfunny are the three leads. It's a one take and run with the cheques gig that would have been way better without them (or the scriptwriters) as the 3 girls put in a passable effort.
If you've nothing better to do, being rubbish is about all it has going for it.
Spoiler alert - Yes it was.
