Qie xiao jin jia de lu guan (2018)
Should be a cult classic
This is an underappreciated campy, goofy, scary and heartwarming movie that reminds us to not "judge a book by its cover" in all senses of the phrase.
There is some acerbic and mean humor and what appears to be homophobic attitudes, but later events in the film cause us to reflect on where those thoughts originate. Do they come from the film or from our own assumptions and prejudices?
PS, it's filled with brilliant Scooby-Doo references.
Ke zai ni xin di de ming zi (2020)
Brilliant, emotional, rewarding, meta
For viewers who don't quite like this film, I can only say "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread."
This is a brilliant film that focuses on the universal motifs of true love, self loathing, dualism and eternal recurrence.
The non-linear flashbacks within the multiple time shifts are ingeniously wielded to propel the narrative forward to a long term, mature perspective.
Enjoyed the multiple symbolisms/metaphors of water, the passage of time/change, memory, repetition, living in the moment, and the significance of deep personal connections that are destined to last a lifetime.
This is a very meta film. The references to Wong Kar-wai's "In the Mood for Love" are unmistakable as are many other affectionate and respectful references to "Birdy," "Happy Together," "Chungking Express," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," and "Eloisa to Abelard."
Absolutely loved the ending that brought the cycle all back around.
Kudos to director Patrick Kuang-Hui Liu and the producers for not creating a typical Romeo and Juliet tragedy.
