Beau Is Afraid (2023)
Just no.
I love Joaquin Phoenix, so I watched without checking. But really, WTF? It just goes on and on, and like Beau, you understand nothing. You wonder if there was a script. You wonder if there's a story. You start to wonder if it's even real. You hope the nightmare ends well. It doesn't. It's one of those non-ending endings. It's like the movie thinks it's cool and alternative in some way. It's not. And the underlying psychosis could possibly give you nightmares just from trying to understand. Believe me, I wanted there to be meaning, depth, or purpose. I wanted my face to stop looking as dumbfounded and confused as Beau's.
Superpower (2023)
Thank you, Sean Penn!
No matter what is said about you, I am totally by your side. Don't let haters get you down. I know what I'm seeing in you. And Zelensky. Totally. This is your best achievement so far.
I loved this documentary with all my heart. I hope it will get picked up wider than Paramount+. Everyone should see it and be reminded of why we are helping Ukraine. Why it is important to us and the world. My favorite scene is in the apartment. The woman mentioned trying to save things that were emotionally valuable. Sean didn't say, "What can I do?" but "What can I carry out?" Right there, in the moment. One reason why I admire him.
Colin in Black and White (2021)
Subtle and brilliant
I thought I knew what to expect, but I was wrong. I streamed it in one sitting. The acting was great. The message was soft yet direct. Clearly, by the overall number rating I see on this, haters are still going to hate. That's a shame. I bet they didn't even watch it all. I'll be watching it again with my grandkids. I can't recommend it enough!
Halloween Kills (2021)
Pathetic.
Not worth watching. Just chaos and blood. No plot. Everyone in my family was disappointed from ages 13-70. And we actually liked the 2018 one. There was not enough Jamie Lee Curtis to carry it.
Ich bin dein Mensch (2021)
What a surprise!
It is light and cute, but leaves room for deep thought and even mystery. I bought it and loved it. Then watched it again to admire Dan Stevens layered portrayal of Tom. And watched it again. And again. I cannot say enough about the story and both actors. Subtitles annoy me, but I'm Your Man was so worth it. My nominee for best foreign movie. I really found so much beauty and depth! It makes for interesting conversations at the end. Just perfect.
Debris (2021)
Don't believe early low ratings
People rating a 1 or 2 did it after only 1 episode. If you are familiar with JH Wyman's work, he builds a solid foundation and builds in surprising directions. It can't be judged fairly in a pilot. Each episode gets better. I didn't think it could get better than E5, and then there was E6!

The Last Kingdom (2015)
The best of everything
The writing, music, photography, and especially, the cast. So many excellent actors. You know a series is great when you streamed all three seasons, and started over TWICE! Then, when you can't wait for season 4, you read ALL the rest of the books it is based on. And when you buy the soundtrack to listen to regularly. And when you wish you knew how to write to and thank several of the actors for the gift of their character. So many. Beocca, Alfred, Sihtric, Finan, Baby Monk, Hild, Brida, Thyra, Ragnar, and Uhtred. I especially wish I could let Ian Hart know. Beocca will live with me forever. New viewers will understand as they love each season more than the last.
Doctor Who (2005)
An overall 10. Season 11 is not tanking it.
All episodes are worth watching. All Doctors are worthy. Doctor 13 is no different. She has her own ways. My favorite Doctor will always be 10, but some of my favorite episodes are Doctor 12, Season 9. Get a grip people. Take your misogyny and be gone. Have you learned nothing? A Doctor of color would be good soon too. There is no show ever as wondrous. Keep your heart and your mind always open.
How to Let Go of the World: and Love All the Things Climate Can't Change (2016)
Josh Fox expands to the world
I have been a fan of his style since Gasland. I had no idea where this would take me. It is an emotional journey told in many locations. It helps give a world view of the problems we face. Anyone calling this fake or bashing Josh Fox clearly has no sense of the enormity of the problem. It is good as an introduction to expanding environmental concerns, but also good for someone who knows quite a bit, but either wants to learn more through different angles or global beauty and alarm. My most admired activists are in it, plus very new ones adding their own view and work from around the globe. I love that Josh "interjects" himself. It is like you are on this journey with a friend. There is beauty, danger, fear, calm, pain, tragedy, and dancing. All interwoven with facts. It is the kind of journey where you appreciate a friend.
