Dou Luo Da Lu (2021)
A Chinese fantasy story
I never read the novel, but this doesn't stop me from understanding what the TV series is trying to tell to audience. This is a Chinese fantasy story to me.
The drama opens with the premise that Tang San is not what he seems and there are mysteries behind all the dreams and special skills that he has been practising. This is one of the aces of the adaptation and it masterfully demonstrates Wang Juan's adeptness as a scriptwriter . We were also introduced to an upright and unflinching Tang San who strives to protect the weak and stands up for justice. However as more and more characters are introduced into the fold, the development of Tang San comes to a standstill. Suddenly, it seems like the story is all over the place.
Many novel fans expressed their disappointment that their beloved Tang San is stripped off his power, abilities and even boldness. All his feats and deeds are given away to others, mostly to Xiao Wu.
However, to me it is not a big issue, and I think the story is more complete now.
Last but not least, my final compliment should probably be credited to the director. I really relished the beautiful shot where Tang San sat alone in the faint light of dusk contemplating his life experiences. The outstanding visual effects and aesthetic sense in this drama definitely deserve some serious praises and it's enough to warrant a full recommendation.
And also, the special effort is much better than what I expected.
