Silver River (1948)

very well acted, morality stressed
12 February 2007
I agree with all the previously positive opinions on this movie. Thomas Mitchell is an excellent actor who uniquely is found in most of Hollywood's better award-wining movies from the late 30's to the late fifties. He never has a mediocre performance. Errol Flynn was at his best prior to this movie but still his skill is clearly demonstrated. Ann Sheridan plays the part of a " strong woman " by donning mens' clothing in her pursuit of being a business woman with her silver mining husband. Typical of most movies prior to the mid-60's; there is either one or no comment on woman cross-dressing into cowboy duds. Errol does say in the script " you look very silly wearing pants "; Ann claims " I borrowed them from my brother " and " would look more silly not wearing any right now " . Her pants are slim fitted, showing her beautiful feminine figure, allowing for them to be tucked into tall mens' riding boots. She cuts a very seductive figure in her " brother's borrowed clothes ".

Reba McIntire's wardrobe steals the movie
6 February 2007
Reba's role as "Burgundy Jones " the owner of a brothel and admirer of Mr. Hawke's poker skills, steals the movie with the sexiest leather cowboy duds ever. It is very highly improbable that this leather outfit could have been made in this time era, never mind that a cross-dressing female would be allowed to wear these masculine leather garments during this time . Reba does save the life of Kenny Rogers(Hawke) from the Mexican gallows when wrongly accused of cheating at cards. Reba gives Kenny the chance to represent a girl group with their financial backing to enter a big poker game with the world's best players in San Francisco. Kenny comes through; surprise ! Reba as Burgundy , didn't get to strut her stuff enough in her cowboy leathers as she should have don, she was shot and never wore her sexy leathers again. Linda Evans re-appears in this "Gambler" sequel dressed in another cowboy outfit. This black cloth outfit is unlike her first cowboy outfit she wore in her first "Gambler" episode. Linda as " Kate " the bounty hunter is now a locale sheriff dressed like Gene Autry in his movie fancy duds. Kate has tight rodeo riding pants tucked into her cowboy boots with matching jacket and Stetson hat. Kate looks great with her cowboy gun belt slung around curving hips.

Similar to " Son of Paleface and Paleface " but not as good.
21 January 2007
Don Knotts was true to form as a meek and weak man with a little gumption; his historical stereotype. Yes, this movie is a weaker version of a combined " Paleface and Son of Paleface " from earlier times. Barbara Rhodes is a very attractive woman with average acting skills. She is the best looking "cowboy" in her western duds. Her jeans look fabulous on her very shapely figure; she was poured into these pants like liquid wax into a mold. Barbara wears tall , tan ,suede cowboy boots with her jeans tucked inside with matching tan leather gun belt,; very sensual in her disguise as a male outlaw. Barbara, like Jane Russell in both Palefaces , becomes a reformed outlaw and marries the male star.By contrast, I have given " Son of Paleface " a value of 10 out of 10 for its effort in previous reviews. Jane Russell as a " cowboy outlaw "doesn't wear jeans but fancy stretch ski pants as her riding attire, over all Jane Russell is more sensual than Barbara.

Fantastic artistry; very funny and visually thrilling
18 April 2005
Wow, what a movie ! The very beautiful Jane Russell, either as a saloon girl/owner or cross-dressing female outlaw, looks absolutely luscious & stunning. Jane teaming up with my childhood idol , Roy Rogers ,does a great chemistry relationship. Jane as the Outlaw, looks very sensual in her cowboy outfit. Her men's clothes that she wears can not hid her gender.Roy has been known for his fancy " Nudie Cohn " cowboy duds. Bob Hope swipes Roys outfit and dons it in order to fool " Trigger " for an attempted escape that fails. Jane as " Mike " is obviously interested in sexy cowboy clothes, her own outfit attests to that statement.Frank Tashlin, the director, should of had Jane "Mike " strip Roy of his fancy cowboy duds and donned her new conquest outfit herself.Jane had the opportunity to do this after she pistol-whips him from behind and knocks Roy out cold. She would have looked more erotic prancing around in " The King of The Cowboy's clothes " and sitting mounted on " Trigger " ! She is the sexiest cowgirl ever !

Audrey Totter is very sexy in her leather cowboy pants and boots
3 April 2002
The movie is unusual because the ladies are the powerful ones in this movie. Audrie Totter is the cowgirl Emma Peel Because of her sexy leather pants and riding boots. Audrey is also the opposite of Emma because of her evil disposition. Warren O'Leary.
