Midsommar (2019)
An unusual horror
When I first heard of this, someone proposed it fell under the "good for her" horror genre (think films like teeth, Carrie, Jennifer's body) due to the ending. However someone else disputed this, stating that the ending is in no way good for the female lead, as the whole film is written and filmed in a way that mimics what is happening to the main character - the indoctrination and confirmation of them into the cult, until they are entirely lost within. They argued that this is more of a subtle horror film, in that it doesn't bludgeon the viewers over the head with shock tactics, but slowly sucks us in to the increasingly weird situation until we have lost sense of reality, much like the main characters, and indoctrinates us in much the same way as the character. In fact, they argued it was almost feminine comparably to many other horrors, in its nuances and subtlety, and all the more pervasive due to its manner of telling the story, drawing us in like the cult it portrays. Gotta say.. I watched it purely on that description, and goddamn it was right. Bloody loved it.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
Unexpectedly entertaining
Wasn't sure what to expect of this, but decided to give it a whirl and bloody glad I did! Will definitely be buying this. Sure it plays fast and loose at times with the myth, but cinematographically it's bloody gorgeous as are the fight scenes. I like the dialogue being less flowery, and how it's condensed ALOT of time into a manageable length without losing the story or developing bad pacing, though I'd have been happy to watch more, and would have liked a few more scenes surrounding back story to the war. The casting choices were good, and though it is a dark film, especially for a fantasy action genre type, it was punchy and not so serious that it got lost in it. The soundtrack is bloody good too.
Brimstone (2016)
Depressing as hell
You keep waiting for the protagonist to have even the slightest relief from the unremitting cruelty, but it never comes. Even the end is her killing herself to save her daughter, but what fate would an infant girl have in the wild west at that time? Probably the same as her mother endured. Whilst it's well acted, the storyline comes to me when I'm feeling low and makes me morbid. To be honest I wish I'd never watched it.
Hudson Hawk (1991)
An over the top daft caper, but funny nonetheless
I usually hate these kind of films, and find them cheesy and off-putting. I have to say though this film, along with a few others e.g. Princess bride, robin hood men in tights, just amuses me. It's incredibly OTT, not at all plausible, and one of those films that would never be made now, and you're not sure how it got made at all. And yet.. despite pantomime level villains, impromptu singing, an inept female spy, oddly callous spies named after sweets ("you want me to rape them?" "No butter fingers" honestly? Wtf?) and an insane English butler.. it still makes me laugh. Bruce Willis and his thieving partner do slapstick comedy hilariously, the action scenes are as unbelievable as Home Alone or Moonwalker but don't pretend to be serious, the story is silly and never pretends otherwise, and it's easy to watch. If you love any ridiculous 80s films, give this a go.
The Whole Nine Yards (2000)
Not to everyone's taste, but I still love it
I first watched this as a teenager, and have always enjoyed it as a film. Matthew Perry is a bit OTT with the slapstick comedy, but I personally like the way he does it. Bruce Willis's character turns out to be more likeable than expected, and you warm to him (Bruce can do comedy when he puts his mind to it, watch Hudson hawk if you need more proof). Jill the dental assistant is damn good fun as a character, It's a shame they don't do more with Roseanne Arquettes character though. The story is simple but fun with a dry sense of humour at times - it reminds me of some English comedy films in that regard. Don't expect an epic adventure or extravagant action and you might be pleasantly surprised by this low key comedy.
Wimbledon (2004)
A light hearted comedy
I don't usually rate rom coms of the four weddings ilk, but this was a pleasant surprise, as was Paul Bettany. I had watched him be a villian before, but not a gentleman, and he does it well. I wasn't expecting anything from it at all, but found myself really enjoying it. It's not a great epic, but it doesn't try to be, and its tone stays light hearted throughout. I'll definitely watch this again.
The Midnight Gospel (2020)
Unusual but enjoyable
I didn't get the concept at first, and was mostly just liking the adventure time esque animation, and the cool songs. The actual debate can be hard to focus on whilst everything else is happening in the animation. But what I've enjoyed is watching the show once with the animation to enjoy the story it's telling, and then listening to the same show again whilst doing a task, so I listen to the podcast. That's actually quite an enjoyable chilled out way to fully enjoy it. Definitely not my usual thing to watch, and I don't really do podcasts, but it's definitely something Ive found myself enjoying. Would recommend giving it a go!
I Care a Lot (2020)
Surprisingly satisfying
Spoilers* I would not normally like the kinds of characters in this film, and spent most of it dying for Rosamund Pike's character to get her comeuppance. Peter Dinklage's is also pretty unlikeable, so whilst I wanted him to rescue his mum, I wasn't overly enamoured with him either, and was wondering how the movie was going to pull this story to a satisfactory conclusion that didn't seem to reward evil people, or end as death all round. And don't get me wrong, the ending was suitably moralistic, a little foreshadowed, and nicely poetic, so they managed that. What I didn't expect was this film to give me the 'bonnie & clyde' vibe - which to me denotes a movie where you end up wanting to see how far the main characters can go - whereby I end up rooting for amoral, evil lead characters, just because they're so unapologetically so. The ending was a good shock to the system after getting caught up in that moment, to remind you that these people are evil and really shouldn't win, but that moment before was actually one I relished a bit. Not many movies manage that, and none as well as Natural Born Killers, but it was an unexpected moment in this one that pulled the story out of being drab and forgettable. May well watch again.
Tag (2018)
Just damn good fun
Highly recommend this film for some feel good and over the top comedy. I don't normally do cringe humour, or incredibly over the top stuff.. but this film is tongue in cheek, and carries off the extreme parts of its plot well. It never apologises for it, and plays it up if anything, so every character is just as into the OTT viewpoint as the others. I really wasn't sure whether it would be any good having seen the trailer (or whether all the good bits would bein the trailer), but was incredibly pleasantly surprised and now enjoy watching it whenever i feel the need to be cheered up lately. It makes me laugh.
