More about Ray, less about Ken!
18 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The movie really tries to sell you on Ken being a good bloke and make him likable, but it doesn't really give him anything to do that is likable, and certainly didn't sell me on him having to live so he could 'go do some good'. They just rely on the fact that he's played by an attractive actor.

I'd love to see a whole movie with Ken because they actually built him to be pretty cool and complicated.

This movie really shows it's age with the slurs and fat phobia as well. It's just really off-putting and spoils what could have been quite fun for a couple of hours.

The thing that kind of redeemed it was the end with the movie set. It helped that it didn't rely on the Ken character.

Codependently Ever After

Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, the actors were good and I'd love to watch them in something else but this movie wasn't great. It did try to deal with important issues, but didn't actually do it very well.

The two characters seemed to have sexual chemistry but you didn't really see them connect on much else, and they seemed to just fall into wanting to be parents together. I get that it sometimes happens that way in real life, but still.

My biggest problem with the movie was that the characters issues never seemed to be dealt with. Elena has some self esteem issues around her age and womanhood that's not even touched on other than the how it relates to her fertility, and her fear of abandonment doesn't really get much room either.

Shane is a man-child who thinks relationships should be perfect which is seriously naive for a doctoral student and he seems to come from a place of privilege and expects everything to come easily. His attitude gets a bit of a ding when his dad tells him his parents fought sometimes and we're supposed to think that fixes everything.

In the end these two characters got back together, but to see them as anything more than two damaged people clinging to a messed up relationship is hard.

Confronted this viewer with their voyeurism

This movie makes you watch the standard exploitative horror movie murders of young sexual women from the point of view of the killer and made me confront my interest in this kind of thing. Maybe I'm reading too deep, but sometimes that gets you more.

A decent movie but definitely not perfect.

I'm slightly ashamed that I originally came to this movie for Norman Reedus, but the guy only says one word and is gone before the credits. Of course, by that point I was interested enough in the movie to keep going.

It's an interesting take on the serial killer genre, and other people have mentioned how it does seem to pay homage to Silence of the Lambs, even making a reference in the movie, but it feels like a very German take on it.

The only let down is the brief use of CGI. It just wasn't up to what they tried to do with it.

All in all it's worth a watch.

Hannibal (2013–2015)

Started out unique but lost it's way

Perhaps it's because I've never been a fan of aesthetic over function, but this show seemed to get so lost in trying to be artistic that it forgot that plot is important too.

The first season is tense and interesting with well differentiated characters, even if it does lean on louder than life killers to hold the interest like a child telling outrageous stories.

The second is interesting in it's own way. It narrows in on the relationship between Will and Hannibal without loosing too much of the rest of the world.

The third is a different beast. The first half feels like at most three episodes stretched out with the use of (admittedly pretty) renderings of blood. For the second we're almost back to where we started, but we only get one other killer and none of the interesting interplay that made things interesting before.

Hilariously terrible

I decided to watch this show because of the effect it's had on the fandom community (I was a small child when it first came out) and it's both horrendous and perfect. It made me laugh out loud more than many comedy shows manage, and the bad guy seems to have come from the Nicolas Cage school of acting.

The movie that Sucker Punch dreamed of being

This feels like a catharsis built for teen and twentysomething women and I for one loved it and could really understand the place it was coming from. It does have a tendency to blow aspects into sharp relief, narratively, but sometimes that's what you need a movie to do.

Tonally mixed but worth a watch

This TV series felt to me like a comedy premise and set of characters that's been written as a horror think piece by someone else. That said, it is interesting to watch. It's fast paced and doesn't go on to long.

A good movie miss-marketed.

What you get out of this movie depends a whole lot on what you were expecting going in. If you were expecting a critique of the superhero genre in the vain of Logan then you're going to be seriously disappointed. If you're hoping for a horror movie where 'superman' is the monster, it's pretty damn awesome.

Well made but could have done more
9 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's a really well put together movie with some top notch actors, but I kind of wish they had done more to make the end result less expected. The fact is, if you're genre savvy at any level you can figure out who's going to come out alive in the end. If they'd had the confidence to introduce a few more characters as fully rounded people and then surprised us it would have felt more real, rather than pandering to the power fantasy.

Worthwhile for Norman Reedus fans
9 March 2021
I expect I'm part of a decent sized contingent who came to this movie as fans of Norman Reedus, and so I didn't really have a very clear idea of what I was heading into. And honestly, I'm not sure knowing more would have helped this movie not feel very strange. It's definitely worth it if push through to the end, though.

Some good, some bad
7 March 2021
It's a pretty standard monster horror movie, with good practical effects that show you Del Toro's focus, but the main characters feel like bland placeholders and the resolution felt like something that could only ever work in movie land. I did find myself liking some of the side characters. Those played by Giancarlo Giannini, Charles S. Dutton and Norman Reedus felt like they were actually alive in the setting and had enough personality to make them interesting.

At least it made me laugh?
7 March 2021
The plot is all over the place, the editing is terrible, it looks like they went for the first take every time and I kept expecting it to be smarter than it was. That said, the background music was okay and I laughed twice.

Something a little different
6 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly, I knew I was going to like this when they hung a lampshade on the whole 'winning at chess so we know how smart the protagonist is' trope. Even the mistake that Howard makes to escalate things is in character for the softer version of himself.
