Doctor Who: The Doctor's Wife (2011)
Wow.
This episode blew me away. The performances from Matt Smith and Susanne Jones are amazing and the fantastic script is exploding with unique ideas and keeps you hooked throughout. I loved the character of Idris and it was great to have the Doctor challenged by something so deceptively simple. Speaking of that the antagonist was indeed simple but shockingly effective. The general atmosphere of this episode is weird, creepy and loads of fun. Rory was also used well in this episode and didn't come across as annoying or intrusive like he usually does. Apart from some arc teasing and the usual production issues, the crew of this show and Neil Gaiman did an outstanding job on this episode.
Doctor Who: The Curse of the Black Spot (2011)
One of the most forgettable episodes ever
Did I really say I was looking forward to watching this episode in my last review? The start of the episode wasn't too bad and pirates in Doctor Who could have and should have worked with a decent script. The humour is solid and some of the design work is interesting. The biggest problem with the episode is the Siren which looks goofy whenever it pops up and the child actor was particularly awful as well. Overall, the curse of the black spot is a forgettable and unimportant story that leaves a lot to be desired.
Doctor Who: Day of the Moon (2011)
A last sigh for Steven Moffat
It seems in the Moffat era of Doctor Who that every two prayer will have a great first part and a disappointing second part. This happened a lot twice in season 5 and it has happened here again. So much is left unexplained and the teasing of future episodes with the pregnancy stuff just left me feeling sour. It's clear as day that Moffat can write a compelling story but his need to tie everything into the main arc of the series as a showrunner really annoys me. All of the stuff involving Richard Nixon is great and the visual appeal is nice as well but the story is where the whole thing falls apart. Rory regresses in character and too much time is crammed into a 45 minute episode, making the whole thing feel so rushed. Despite me not really looking forward to watching the next episode (the next time trailer looked iffy), i'm hoping it will at least be self contained and won't try and bait me into watching more with teases and mysteries (almost as if the format of the show isn't enough of a reason to keep watching). The episode starts out needlessly complicated and ends in an insultingly simplistic way. I could pray all day that future episodes will make up for episodes like these and maybe i'll like this episode more looking back but i'm extremely doubtful of that happening. Well done Steven.
Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut (2011)
A solid start to season 6
I quite like the opening episode to series 6 even though it has its fair share of flaws. It's a very visually appealing episode in terms of cinematography and the design of the monster. The opening segment in the desert is emotionally crushing - it feels like one of the biggest challenges the Doctor has had to deal with in a long time. The mysteries of River and the astronauts keep the story interesting and the Silence have a pretty unique mechanic as well. Unfortunately the first scene in which the audience were introduced to the Silence (set in the bathrooms of the white house) was the episode's biggest flaw as the scene was silly and could have been executed better. But this episode is still very enjoyable overall.
