The Transcendents (2018)
Franco reminiscent of Rourke in Homeboy
The critic reviews point to this being Lynchian or even a horror film. It's not. It's a drifter film with the actor Rob Franco as the drifter. He gives a very weird performance that reminded me of 80s Rourke; in particular Rourke in the film Homeboy. Franco is dangerous and combustible. And he holds the film together in the second act - which is the only somewhat problematic act in the film. It still works, but compared to the high stakes absurdity of the first act and the beautiful sonata that is the third act, the second act underwhelms a bit. But that's only a minor quibble. The rest of the cast is terrific and the score is brilliant. I wish I could buy he score.
Married to the Mob (1988)
80's Screwball Comedy
What could have been a silly mobster film OR a stupid rom-com becomes BOTH at the same time in this brilliant film by the late Jonathan Demme.
Mathew Modine and Dean Stockwell are terrific, but obviously this is Michelle Pfeiffer's movie and my god is she a star. I remember seeing it for the first time in the 80's and I never thought much of her and then I was totally blown away by this performance. It's big and broad comedy but with a genuine heart underneath it.
Okay... So Silence of The Lambs is terrific... but I always tell people to go watch Married to the Mob and Something Wild to see Demme at his finest. The mixing of genres is so damn difficult and he makes it look easy.
Crimes of Passion (1984)
An obscene opus of double identities
Ken Russell is a genius wild man. This film has got some of the crazies dialogue ever written. (Delivered perfectly by the brilliant Kathleen Turner and Tony Perkins).
The movie is filthy, hilarious, over the top and smart as hell.
In many ways this is the ultimate female empowerment film. Turner's character is always in control no matter how absurd the LARP situations are.
For people new to Ken Russell, this may be the best place to start.
Chernobyl (2019)
The best Mini series ever created
From what they don't show to what they do show, nothing before have I ever seen that is this good!
The Vigil (2019)
Creepy/unique
Unsettling film with terrific performance by Dave Davis at the center.
