Ruby in Paradise (1993)
My new comfort film
This isn't the kind of film where a girl moves to a small town, meets a boy, they fall in love and live happily ever after. It's so much better. Ruby in Paradise follows Ruby, a young woman who moves to a small resort town in Florida in order to get a fresh start in life. She's a calm observer, adding to the leisurely pace of the film, but her character comes to life as she narrates the pages of her diary. Ashley Judd's great acting makes it easy to get inside her head and understand her choices and reactions. Not only was there amazing acting and character depth from the lead, but the supporting cast was filled with strong women that each had a story of their own. I find a new reason to appreciate this coming-of-age drama each time I watch it.
Kiss the Ground (2020)
Empowering and Entertaining
Stunning visuals, uplifting music, and optimistic voices from around the world unite in Kiss the Ground to give audiences hope for the future. This documentary effectively utilizes celebrity activists, such as Woody Harrelson and Ian Somerhalder, along with scientists, farmers, and experts to advocate for regenerative agriculture. Not only would this solution reverse global warming, but it can replenish fresh water sources, reverse extinction, and reconnect humanity with nature. The mixing of passionate voices with research truly makes Kiss the Ground an empowering and entertaining documentary.
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
Disappointment...
I thought this film was building up to have some great twist but it was such a waste of time. It felt like no effort went into the plot of this film and things were thrown in for no reason at all. Yeah the acting sucked at times, but it was the disappointing ending and a character death (that made no sense and served only to keep the audience from falling asleep) that made this movie so bad.
