The Conjuring 2 (2016)
My kind of Hallmark movie!
I've seen this movie so many times that it's no longer scary. In fact, I treat this film like a feel good Christmas movie! That doesn't mean that it's not scary...in fact, I believe it delivers on every level. I will always love this brand of nostalgic, heavily atmospheric, family based drama that also just happens to deal with the demonic. In reality, The Conjuring films are really about families who manage to avoid the worst by clinging to their love for each other.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Found this one later and loved it
Somehow I missed this movie when it first came out. I saw The "Hannah Grace" film and it temporarily satisfied my need for a good morgue centered movie. But when the opportunity to watch this movie came around again, I was absolutely glad that I did. This is a highly effective "contained" horror film. The performances are fantastic and the emotional balance of the film benefits from the presence of veteran actor Brian Cox. Looking forward to giving it a second viewing.
Stay (2021)
Small movie has scary ending
This is not a big budget studio film, but it's still pretty scary if you can get onboard with the more fashion based beginning. I would call this movie a variation on the found footage genre using YouTube style vlogs to deliver the story. Everything is centered around "Olivia" who moves to NYC to be a fashion model for a company like Victoria's Secret. Just as things start going well she moves into a big apartment filled with all kinds of bad juju. The main characters are a little different than expected ( I like the Julian/BF character) and sometimes this movie seems a little more like a low-budget Black Swan than Paranormal Activity. The ending is actually scary and I felt like it was worth the time I spent watching Olivia prance around to get to that solid horror ending. This movie has a split personality and I guess that's ok in a movie about losing your soul. Not a bad movie for the budget.
