Imawa no Kuni no Arisu: Episode 7 (2020)
Infuriatingly off point
I got The Walking Dead flashbacks from how unrelated to the plot this pointless mass murdering was. I might be a tiny bit thrown off because I enjoy the sci-fi mystery thriller parts so much more. I'll still watch the other episodes, but writing this not that serious rant helps me process.
It's a trope all survival plots eventually fall into, happily leaving their plot in the mud: Here comes "See?! Humans are the real monsters!" Did you come here for the interesting mystery? Oups. Sorry, not here - welcome to endless manslaughter because violence will sell the show. No interesting games or revelations here. Even the characters mutate into mindless story vehicles.
It takes 5 minutes to guess the twist solution of the puzzle at hand (which is supposed to be an unheard of 10 difficulty), but that doesn't matter. See, we added a few manic killers who are going to terrorize everyone for an extended period. It will feel endless and pointless to watch. Whenever something good happens, queue a bad person to ruin it. Let's have some cool duels, but everyone else just dies in really dumb, sad ways.
It eventually ends, but even that is painful. We can't just announce the solution and end the suffering there. We have to stretch it out. Let that tough one punch someone again. Ok again. Well, another time. Ok, that's enough. One more time. Have we made sure all emotions are communicated super clear yet? What if someone watches from 40ft away, will they be able to tell that all this is very, very sad? Can we kill another one? Ok, where was this going again?
Oh right! Yes, puzzle solved. Now what could give this more gravitas than people sobbing in parade watching a burning building? This is so sad, humans really are scary. Glad we made this original and interesting point.
The Good Doctor: Forgive or Forget (2021)
It's starting to feel repetetive
I think I'll need a break from the show after this episode. Something was off about this season and I couldn't put my finger on it. Nothing really progresses and got this filler-y feel to it, even though there are certainly things happening on the screen. The season has some great moments, but it feels stretched out.
The deep focus on relationships this season could sound interesting on paper, but not if we're just running in circles with no new results. Shaun and Lea overcome struggles, again. Aaron and Debbie fight over the gun thing, again (destroying a relationship that was good for the show just for a bit of sad I guess). Claire is mad about her parents, again and Alex and Morgan are stuck in an endless cycle of a literal on-off relationship.
It's just tiring and I don't want to watch "will they forgive each other and come back together" on endless repeat. This season feels so soapy and boring. Even the whole arc about Lea's pregnancy was just played for sads and didn't lead anywhere. It's an emotional roller coaster without wheels - no matter how hard it tries, it's stuck.
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Loved it
I don't understand why people are hating on this movie. I loved every minute of it - its actors, writing, visuals and pacing is just so well executed. It's understandable to be a bit put off by the ending, but at the same time the ending fits the other narratives so well that it makes perfect sense. It doesn't try to give you the ending you deem satisfying, but one that matches the story. I think that's a respectable thing to do.
Why Are You Like This (2018)
Thanks, I hate it
A satire show about woke people and how they're supposedly making things worse for everyone and themselves. Except it's all about strawman stereotypes and trying so hard to be cynical that I don't know which crowd this show wants to appeal to. This show is probably too insulting for those its talking about and too annoying for those who don't understand what's going on. Maybe there are a few die-hard anti-wokes out there who finally get their queue.
The main cast, a group of narcissists making other people's lifes a living hell, feels so out of touch with reality that it's painful to watch. Everyone else is feeling tormented and helpless against an onslaught of wokeness. Look at those poor people, they're not doing anything and then something something feminism gender racism. Maybe I'm missing something here but I also kinda don't want to find out what it is.
Because of its lack of self-awareness and deeper understanding about any of the topics it addresses, everything feels careless and tacky. And if you're still in for the jokes about woke culture, you'll be rewarded with boring characters and sitcom quality scenes. What a time to be alive.
