Robots (2005)
Not necessarily for kids
This may or may not "spoil" the movie, but there are a few too many lightly veiled sexual comments in this movie for me to be comfortable recommending it to parents of younger children. It was a great movie, but with comments like, "...the Brazilian Wax...it's like a party everyday!" and something (I can't remember the wording) about the fact that Fender and Rodney would be spending the night together...
Honestly, I draw the line at sexual references, especially the ones that get a giggle out of the audience, because the kids are going to ask why something is funny...and do you really want to explain why you (or the rest of the audience) laughed at something like that to your 5 or 6 year old?
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
Too Short
This is ridiculous. Hasn't it occurred to them to do the whole Volumes 1 and 2 like Tarrantino did for Kill Bill? They are cutting out HUGE amounts of information and not even bothering to explain how/why certain characters are aware of what they do know. Newsflash! The books are getting longer! It's only going to get worse...
That said, I was much more pleased with the overall feel of PoA than I was with either SS or CoS. It was darker (right direction), a little more grown up, and the CGI was a nice departure from the old effects (the big spiders in CoS never looked real to me). They threw a lot of money at this one, only to come up short. It's a good thing that they are getting bigger name talent for the adult roles, so that the kids can have several someones to draw ideas and techniques from, but they are learning much too slowly, Radcliffe in particular.
Personally I think that MOST of the shortcomings in this film could have been righted by the whole Volume idea. 5 hours of film would have dealt nicely with the holes in the story, and let's be honest, they could have made MORE MONEY by splitting it up, release one now and the second half during the holidays...
Goblet of Fire is going to need at least 5 hours of film, perhaps 7...they need to get their acts together or NO ONE is going to want to see these....
Very Bad Things (1998)
A schizoid reaction is normal...
You'll find yourself either horrified by the movie itself, by the fact that you're actually laughing at it, or perhaps both. This movie is not for the faint of heart, or for those who will be getting married in a traditional fashion anytime soon. Make that ever. I'm just glad I saw this AFTER my wedding, and that my husband hadn't had a traditional bachelor party anyway.
Gilmore Girls (2000)
Good solid Show
So, having had a child recently I'm struck with the impropriety of most TV fare now. Gilmore Girls was a relief. It's funny, child friendly fare that makes you think about your own relationships and how you deal with them. I'm sure it helps that I have friends and family very much like the characters, but I stand by my statement that it's a great show for everyone. I'm still however unsuccessful in trying to get my husband to watch.
