La règle du jeu (1939)
Boring, pretentious, entirely overrated
Having watched two Renoir's films before, La Grande Illusion and Boudu Saved from Drowning and having disliked them mostly, I didn't come to this film with high hopes. And indeed, it is even worse than those films. I have no idea what the critiques see here that it's supposed to be one of the best movies ever made. I couldn't care about any of the persons in the movie at all and they were all just mostly annoying. Humor is dry and leaves with no smiles in the end.
However, I still can't give less than a 4 because there is still worse movies out there that have definitely worse camerawork and stuff. I am really wondering now though do I want to see La Chienne from Renoir anymore cause all his movies seem so bad to me...
La grande illusion (1937)
Simply hasn't aged well
I see this movie lauded as a masterpiece often. Personally however, I couldn't get much out of it at all. I couldn't feel attached to any of the characters except maybe a bit for Erich von Stroheim's character. The film drags on a lot with scenes that simply aren't funny or interesting. Now I love a lot of old movies but this just couldn't get me. Perhaps I'm not intellectual enough or something..
