The Sandman (2022)
I'm obsessed?
I had absolutely no expectations for this, didn't even know about the comics (sorry), but I was pleasantly surprised by a lot of aspects of this show.
1. I loved the entire concept of "The Dreaming" as an entire metaphysical world and the "Endless" as the embodiments/personifications of natural forces and human emotions/state of minds. I particularly LOVED the aesthetic of Dream, Lucifer and Desire and think the actors did a great job of portraying those characters.
2. I loved the LGBT representation. As a queer person, I really appreciated the extent of queer-coding and queer representation in this show.
3. I liked that some episodes could be stand-alone short films. This might be somewhat of a controversial take, but I was blown away by episode 5. It started out so normal and I was almost starting to wonder about the whole point of that diner scene, but the episode unfolded in such an unexpected way and had such a great narrative arc that I was truly shook. This is definitely not something that can be taken for granted when it comes to a lot of contemporary TV show releases.
4. It left me wanting more? The first season obviously introduced a lot of different characters. Because of that, there hasn't been a great ton of character development and plot for some of those characters yet. However, the show has definitely left me intrigued and it's now up to the second season (pls Netflix, don't disappoint us once again) to build on season one and show us what's in store for the characters that have been introduced to us.
Can't wait!
Love, Victor (2020)
Overall decent, but got worse with every season
Let's start with the good things. This is a queer themed show for a young target audience and it is overall quite lighthearted and positive. IMO, this is already great because, while the straights™ have had their funny little rom coms for decades, shows and films about queer love have often been tragic, sad and everything but lighthearted.
"Love, Victor" does a good job at representing LGBT characters. Also, there are some really lovable side characters (e.g. Felix) and the character development of some characters (e.g. Lake, Victor's parents..) was decent. The show also touched on a whole lot of important but difficult topics, such as coming out, internalized homophobia, sex ed, healthy and unhealthy relationships etc.
HOWEVER, the third season in particular felt very (!) messy. Some plot elements such as the Victor/Nick relationship just felt super forced and rushed. I'm conflicted about making this argument because I am well aware of the fact that the portrayal of hook-up culture and STDs is important and not necessarily unrealistic, but it just did so little for the underlying plot of the show that I didn't like it.
Also, it felt as though someone broke up or started dating someone literally every 5 minutes. This kept going on and on and by the second last episode, I could not imagine how it would even be possible to tie up all the loose ends of the plot. Unfortunately, these fears turned out to be true because the last episode felt just as rushed and cheesy as the rest of the season.
TLDR: Cute, overall lighthearted show with decent portrayal of LGBT characters and topics; But: noticeable decrease in quality after first season, often felt too cheesy/rushed/forced/messy. I would not rewatch this, but I would watch it again for the first time.
