Otoko-tachi no Yamato (2005)
well.i'm not Japanese but...
... but dumuel's critic i could use to comment mostly of the war movies form USA... The movie try to touch the conscience of the Japanese, make them remember what their fathers and grandfathers has to do... war is not a "good guy vs bad guy" thing... both have villains and heroes
....... i'm agree, the FX's are not so good than a Hollywood movie, but is a very strong story... normal people confronting the horror of war, their feelings about the honor, patriotism, and different ways to facing death; there's no silly's love stories, or super pilots fighting alone the Americans, politic is out, the human beings are the protagonist of the movie...
like some said "pearl harbor sucks", and "Yamato" is excellent!
Ultraman (2004)
A nice surprise
Ultraman in the 21 century, secret government organizations, characters with dark secrets, authority abuses...,innocents in danger: and suddenly all this things blow up when The Silver Giant appears!! The old story of love, sacrifice and heroism, upgrade for a new audience, and a great gift for the 70' and 80's children.
I like the detail that the hero was a man in his 35' old, with a little boy and wife; after all, mostly of the Ultra fans we have on this age now, still, this is not a fanatic movie, its a fresh story and people of all ages can enjoy it...its funny, this movie has the same elements of R. Emmerich's Godzilla, but without pretensions... and this was made with good taste!
Maybe the story is a little slow at the beginning, and some characters could be more exploited, but nothing that the audience can't stand. The movie ended and you still want more action! Thanks for bring us Ultraman back!
Superman Returns (2006)
You'll love it, or hate it!
I was on a little vacation when "S. R." was exhibited (sorry my English isn't very good), and i enjoyed every minute, and i stayed to see it again.
I'm not saying the movie is perfect, Brandon Routh has no opportunity to show all his acting skills. Singer's Superman is not very expressive... Kevin Spacey apparently try to evolve the Hackman Luthor to a more evil guy, a men with tricks learned in jail, and pure hate. He doesn't care the people, or money, just destroy. ... Luthor's Henchmen are OK... Kitty, a cartoon character. Never like the idea that Superman is incompetent without powers. Powerless doesn't mean Helpless.
The rest of the film, as i say ed before, i enjoyed. For the Comic fanatics, i tell: This is the Movie continuity! So, Superman can resist Kriptonite if he put all his will on it. (In Comic books he can't turn the world back), and he is capable to have a son with a human girl. All i can recommend in my limited English: rent the DVD, enjoy the movie, see the extras, Superman Returns and maybe he stays this time!
