Madame Web (2024)
3/10
Bad story, bad writing, False advertising.
21 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The scene of spider girls fighting a spider guy is a dream sequence. It's about 30 seconds & is shown early. The rest of the time, the girls are teenagers. Dakota uses her newly discovered ability to see briefly into the future (think Nick Cage in Next), to run from the spider guy. He's trying to kill the girls due to his recurring dream of them killing him in the future. Of course, it's never explained why they would kill him. His criminal exploits all revolve around finding the girls. He's clearly been looking for them for a long time. Outside of that, it doesn't appear he's wanted by the police or anyone else. So what is going on? We get no answers. Also his audio is dubbed, badly. Dakota is a neurotic mess for most of the film. We see glimpses of what she sees using her abilities, and they mostly confuse her. Then suddenly, with 5 mins left in the film, mid scene, her entire demeanor shifts. She suddenly has full confidence in her abilities and how it all works. We stop seeing her visions. And she starts talking like the Madame Web character. She knows everything that is happening and will happen. Including the death of the villain, and ensuing accident which blinds and cripples her. Then the next scene, a few days later, she's in a wheelchair, with reflective glasses on, and starts talking about the girls like they are her beloved children. The dialogue is cliched & cringe, and delivered completely deadpan. The change is extremely jarring. It makes you feel like you missed something. 3/10 don't bother.

The issues with this film
25 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ok. This films has a great premise. Unfortunately Diggsy is a neurotic entitled jerk & Suzette starts off as a series of 1-dimensional female movie tropes. And all of that is vividly highlighted when Gwyneth enters the film. She's charming, funny, sweet, beautiful, & quirky. She's completely interesting, highlighting how bland & uninteresting Diggsy is. Then that universe's version of Suzette shows up & she's now a 3-dimensional character. You actually feel for her. Then he comes across another version of Daphne & you see how great a character she is. So it's just him. He isn't likable or relatable. I don't know if it's how he's written or the actor, but Diggsy is a terrible lead character for this otherwise interesting film.

The Flash (I) (2023)
4/10
What movie did you see???
17 June 2023
I'm very confused. I saw Flash Thursday night. Horrible CGI, bad attempts at jokes, dialogue that shows a shocking lack of self awareness, "plot" & tone all over the place. Where is this masterpiece you all saw? It was great to see Keaton as Batman again, Supergirl was awesome (for the little she was there), and Barry's moments with his mom were good. Those positives are why it has a 5/10. The cameo montage was hit & miss, though the best one was spoiled by the director. Unfortunately it ends on a head scratching cameo. Who the hell asked for that??? The "twist" was obvious if you know anything about Flash. Especially since the TV show did that particular villain.

Black Adam (2022)
2/10
I don't understand what DC is doing
21 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Slight spoilers I guess.

I went in with low expectations. The scenes copied from every other super hero film, the terrible CGI sets (how did the scene of the JSA flying out of their underground base look worse than a very similar scene from the 1st X-men film, 22 years ago? How is that even possible?), the CGI monstrosity "villain" at the end... Really derailed a decent film. Adam's true origin was a nice twist. I really liked Hawkman & Dr Fate. Just wish we'd gotten more time with them. Adam Smasher & wind girl were ok but ultimately forgettable. I feel like they needed to allow more time with Adam, the woman, & her son 1st. Establish the city villains fully. Then have the JSA come in. Also the hypocrisy of Hawkman yapping at Adam when he works for AMANDA WALLER? Like, really? Fate knows everything, but doesn't know they work for one of the worst people on the planet? Would have been much better to explore that than the video game boss at the end. Lost opportunity. 5/10.

You Get Me (2017)
3/10
You know why, even if you think you don't think you do
22 July 2022
Why did this get made? The viewing interests of tween to teen girls (11-16) last as long as it takes for them to grow out of that age bracket. Then there's a new group of girls in it. The new group doesn't care about the same stories being retold over & over. They only care that the celebrities they obsess over are in the new version. The group that was in this age group in 2017 grew up watching Bella Thorne. My 21 yr old wanted to see this crap, though she denies it now. Lol. That's why teen dramas like this get remade every 5-7 years. To appeal to the new group of 11-16 yr old girls. It's brilliant from a marketing standpoint. These films are cheap to make. Its nerve wracking if you're a parent of daughters who happen to be just far enough apart that you're forced to go through the cycle multiple times. My daughters are 26, 21, & 15. So I have seen the pattern. And am stuck in it right now. Occasionally I get lucky. Either the film will be entertaining despite itself, like Jennifer's Body. Or it might actually be good, like The Duff. But mostly it's painfully awful fart blossoms like this one.

Rating purely for the premise
18 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The acting is meh. The editing & dialogue are borderline terrible. The ambiguous ending would be far more acceptable if the overall film was better. But it's still good enough to discuss, simply because of the premise.

I would love to see this film remade with a better cast, director, & editor.

The Batman (2022)
8/10
I enjoyed it.
4 March 2022
Batman is a problematic character in a modern world. He could do far more to fix Gotham with his money as Bruce Wayne than his fists as Batman. This film faces that full on. It also mentions that crime has gotten worse since he started his crusade of street vengeance. And he has given the wrong people the wrong type of inspiration. I was truly impressed they went that far. There are some issues. When watching it you will definitely be able to see the films this one pulls from. There are sequences that feel like deleted scenes from Seven & Saw. And Penguin sometimes seems like De Niro's Capone wandered in off the set of the Untouchables. The Riddler is a very good villain at 1st, though he should come with the disclaimer (Riddler by Chris Nolan), because he very much channels Nolan's brand of "gritty realism" the way Joker did in The Dark Knight. Later you can see Reeves pulling back & trying to make him more comic-bookish for sequels. I thought emo Bruce would bug me. But it might be the best disguise yet. No one would suspect this Bruce Wayne of being Batman. Ever! He says some of the same things to the same people and they are credibly oblivious. It's worth seeing.

Teenagers written by aliens
10 February 2022
Review

This film seems like an "Americanized" version of a European story, made by a European Director. That's my take. I could be wrong. But it's definitely a European style coming-of-age story. So it doesn't really work for the average American viewer. I honestly think American viewers would enjoy this more if it was in Romanian, with subtitles. Or at least not in colloquial American English. Then the "quirkiness" of some of the characters would be less jarring. As is... It's just... Off. Like aliens watched a bunch of American tv & films about high school kids... And tried to make a story. But it's based on stories that were purely fiction in the 1st place. So the characters seem odd, but not in a satirical way. Ex: It is possible that a Romanian teenage boy would turn down sex with a hot girl he really likes because he's afraid it could be a one night stand. I have no idea. Perhaps that's a thing. But NO American teenage boy would. That's fictional to the point of... ridiculous. These kids seem like characters written by someone who's never actually met a teenager. At least not an American one. It would be easier to ignore if it were in another language. Again, my opinion.

A nice ride...
22 July 2011
I saw Cap @ the midnight showing. Admittedly, I am a comic book fan, but not a Captain America fan. He was always hokey to me. I wasn't even a real fan of the Avengers.

That said, all these movies have been awesome. And CA is no exception. These guys have done an outstanding job of taking material that could easily have been tired & corny, & making in entertaining & funny. The characters take themselves seriously, but are clearly having fun with it. That is a delicate balance that Green Lantern missed. What has made so many of the recent comic book movies good is they've had serious directors & serious actors playing the parts. They take the craft seriously. That has given these stories a credibility they lacked in the past. Captain America had a chance to be as bad as Green Latern, so I was worried. If they didn't do it right, it could have been horrible.

Chris Evans does a great job. He is so believable as the endearing little guy who wont give up. You don't feel sorry for him, because HE doesn't. His life mantra isn't "pity me." It's more, "Yea, I may lose, but not without a fight!" He has heart you cant deny. So seeing what he becomes & what he does with it... You're actually happy for him.

Tommy Lee Jones is at his typical straight-faced wisecracker best. If there has been a better actor at being absolutely hilarious while constantly looking like his dog, cat, & wife just died, I'd like to know who. His delivery is so awesome.

Wow, what a turd.
22 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was slow, boring, & painful. But at least it was long! They took some of the basic story lines of Poltergeist & the Exorcist & made a "new" movie out of them.

The beginning is way too long & drawn out.

Then the rest is goofy &/or predictable. The assistants coming to evaluate if the situation was real is pointless. The medium already knew the father's history, so she knew it was most likely real. Was she testing her assistants? What was the point? Couldn't it have been for the audience's sake? We've already seen proof by then, as have the parents. So all that was a waste. It felt like it was just so they could "shock" us with blaring music notes while we see "creepy" ghosts in corners. We've seen all that before. It's a cliché & it wasn't needed.

The father not realizing he was actually asleep & outside his body has also been done before. Several times… So much that's it's expected. When it's expected, it's not scary or shocking, it's boring. Him walking thru the realm of darkness wasn't bad. But again, it seems like it was so they could shock us with more extremely loud music notes & ghosts with creepy smiles. How many times has that been done before? Seriously.

Simply a bad movie! Go watch the Exorcist & Poltergeist. You'll see what they were trying to do here, only better.

Pretty good for what it is
10 August 2009
The plot is decent. It's pretty predictable for the average movie goer thou. The action is very good thou. There is just enough plot to keep the movie from turning into watching someone play a video game. Which is what a lot of action movies can get to. A lot of action movies are basically a vehicle for the director to show off just how good his special effects can be. With no thought to keeping more than the average mindless lemming glued to the screen.

For what it is, it isn't bad at all. It was entertaining, which is the point of a movie, in the end. But it has a decent story & a little something for the fans of the old cartoon, & new viewers a like.

Very good movie on several levels
28 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is somewhat different from most horror movies. It doesn't follow the typical patterns, other than the main character (the mother, Radha Mitchell) being a complete moron. Like most main characters in horror movies, the decision making & danger recognition parts of her brain must have been surgically removed. (I don't think this is a spoiler, but just in case, I checked the box) Just to give an example: If your daughter was having nightmares about a town that she could never have possibly been to, & then you find out the town is real, & it's know to be a ghost town where all the inhabitants died in a fire! & is thought to be one of the most haunted towns in America; WOULD YOU TAKE HER THERE?!?!?!?! But other than that... This movie is well thought out. It leaves a lot open to interpretation, which in my opinion is always a good thing. If you enjoy movies that will have you discussing the possibilities afterwards, check this one out!

Saved by the laughs
9 December 2004
This movie could have been called. Blade & Van Wilder vs. the Vampires... Even thou Jessica Biel's name is shown before Ryan Reynolds'. He is the 2nd star & steals the show. He is so hilarious that he makes you forget how cheesy the rest of the movie is. This movie would be just as god awful as the 2nd if not for Ryan. I can't wait to see him in more things. His cameo in Harold & Kumar was equally funny. He may soon become the new king of the one- liner... & he already has proved he can star in a movie, not that Van Wilder was more that a fair movie, but it was held above ground by him... & held below ground by Tara Reid! Blade is his usual one dimensional self. KILL THE VAMPIRES!!! KILL THEM ALL!!!! & Jessica Biel is eye candy... She doesn't develop much at all. Dracula = Nomak. The same drab character... thou his monster from is kind of scary looking, in a grotesque sort of way... Ryan is great... His one-liners had everyone in the movie cracking up

The Village (2004)

Avoid this movie.. Please!
2 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
*** Spoilers, if there can be such a thing with this piece of crap ***

This is the worst movie I have seen in recent memory. Jeepers Creepers manned that post in my list until last night. This movie is long, boring, predictable. There is a conversation between Ivy & one of the Elders about 15 mins into the movie, which gives away the so-called "twist" at the end. A few mins later... Lucius sees one of the "monsters". It's looks so bad & is so obviously a person in a suit that the entire movie has been given away in the 1st 25 mins... but you sit there for the next 90 hoping something else happens... Well... it doesn't... You've just been had... this is movie is worse than Taking Lives (a similar movie in that it gives away the ending 20 mins in) but at least there are some interesting things happening later on. The Village has nothing. No interesting side plots. No interesting characters other than Ivy... She does a good job, but her character doesn't have enough depth to carry a movie. She is the ONLY part of this movie worth seeing. How can you have a 2-hour so called thriller, but give away the only 2 "thrilling" points of the movie 25 mins in. M.Night had a gem in Sixth Sense. People keep wondering why he brought that out 1st, & then the rest of this crap, i.e. Signs, Unbreakable, & the Village, afterwards... the reason is simple. If we had all seen any of those movies 1st, we would never have paid to see any more... much less paying to see Sixth Sense. So instead, he brings out the best 1st. Forcing us all to go see is later films in the hope one of them will be as good as the 1st. Well... they aren't... Not even Close. We have been had by a con artist on a mass scale... He suckered us in with that 1st great one...

& has been cashing in with crap ever since... All the money Unbreakable, Signs, & The Village have made should be tacked on to the total income of Sixth Sense... Where it all belongs...

A very under-rated movie
22 July 2004
I don't understand why more people don't appreciate this movie. It is very well directed. & While the acting is not top notch, Ashton, as well as the rest of the cast, does an adequate job. This movie is driven by the story. Evan grows up with a very strange problem! He has gaps in his memory. Not over time like most of us do, he has gaps about events that just happened. He doesn't understand what is going on or why. But because of his problem, his mother, who understood the problem because is father had a similar problem, takes him to a shrink. The shrink's idea is to have Evan keep a journal of everything he does. The problem is, he doesn't remember these events, and so he can't log them. Fast-forward to Evan grown... He has witnessed several life-altering events in his life, most of which he can't remember any details of. He finds one of his journals when he is in college, & reading some of the pages, he realizes that he actually DID log the events. While reading about one of them, he suddenly finds himself back in time, watching the event thru his own eyes as he must have watched them as a kid. Apparently, these gaps are like time portals in his mind. Where he can go back & view the events, or more importantly, change his role in them. His efforts & the effects of them are what follow. What I believe this story is built on is that EVERY person in the world as had events in their past that they would LOVE to be able to go back & change. But, would life turn out similar to your current one if you had. Going back & getting an A on the math test in 3rd grade might have kept you from being grounded all summer, but then, because you were outside, your friends were too, so now, one of you friends you grew up with dies in a car crash, which destroys his family. Mother ends up in the nut house; sister ends up a crack-head... Our lives touch so many people in so many ways that to go back & change anything changes the entire world around us. Changing one little thing causes a ripple effect with everyone we know or come in contact with, & everyone they know & come in contact with, & so on... This movie shows this so well. I enjoyed watching it & recommend this to everyone! 10 out of 10

If you know someone, but now don't know them, Do you know them?
17 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
***** Slight spoilers contained herein *****

A lot of people like this movie, but seem to be confused. It's easy to see why you can get confused, but it really isn't that confusing. At the beginning, Joel (Carrey) leaves his home to find his car dented, & ends up taking the train & seems aimlessly lead to the beach. On his way, he meet's Clementine (Winslett) & seems again, aimlessly drawn to her. They speak & hit it off instantly! They get along so well that, as a movie viewer, it is somewhat confusing. Because after their encounter that day & the following sequence, the next scene shows him go to her job, but she doesn't know him & he is obviously hurt. But what needs to be understood is, when the movie actually starts off, it is **AFTER** both Joel & Clementine have had their memories erased.

The key to this is Elijah Wood. He works at the clinic & meets Clementine when she goes there to have her memory erased. But he shows up at her house the day after Joel meet's her at the beginning of the movie & is wondering what Joel is doing there! Elijah Wood's character is your clue that this is after both have had their minds erased. She doesn't know why Elijah Wood is so drawn to her, but she doesn't really like him. & Neither she nor Joel understand why they are so drawn to each other. They have an undeniable kinship even thou they apparently just met. The other key to understand this is the twist at the end with the doctor. (All I'm going to say) But when that scenario plays out, it is basically explained that the mind erasure procedure is not perfect. It can't erase your lower, subconscious brain. Thus, Joel & Clementine know each other, thou they don't recognize each other.

That is what makes this movie so good. This is very realistic in my humble opinion. We don't know enough about the brain to dig deep into the subconscious subsystems of our brains, but the mind erasure procedure is pretty simple to understand. They don't go deep. They have you bring in everything you own that reminds you of the person, & then discuss each thing & explain how you feel about the relationship & the other person. During which, they do a cat scan on your brain & analyze the area's of your brain that are reacting! They have you explain the pieces in order, so they can make a road map thru your mind, & basically damage each small section in order. Erasing the all memories of this person. But this is all pretty much visual memory! So, you don't know the person physically or consciously.

Now think back to old relationships. There are foods or smells or places that you have fond feelings for or can put you in a good mood, but you don't consciously know why. You have to think about it, & then it dawns on you the thing reminds you of some person you used to know... but what if you couldn't possibly remember that person. Only the subconscious feeling would be left. Thou unexplained, you would feel drawn to this smell or place or thing... OR PERSON.

I wish this could be real... This would be so great for all our long-term relationships... if we could erase all the pain & anguish, but still keep the feeling of kinship to the person, & start over. That would be great wouldn't it?

This is the statement the movie made to me! I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, & will be buying it the day it is released on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars for me!!!

Go see this movie
10 May 2004
I'll start this by saying I did not want to see this movie. I'm glad someone dragged me into it. The movie is VERY entertaining. Lindsay Lohan is just excellent. She has a quirky & sweet personality that comes thru in all her roles. I loved her in the Parent Trap & should have know this & Freaky Friday would be good if for no other reason than her. Check this movie out. It is hilarious & it will take you back to your days in high school. It shows high school life in a realistic way, while still getting it's point across. Even with the pranks they pull, they are mean & evil, but not sadistic. Nothing that would cause death or bodily harm... Just stupid high school pranks that most of us participated in. Go see this movie & have a great time!

If you liked blade, you'll love this!
23 September 2003
This movie is a good take on the old original story of werewolves & vampires. Werewolves were the daytime protectors of the vampires. But something happened that caused them to become mortal enemies & started a 1000-year war. There isn't a lot of direct character development, but that would have slowed the movie down. It's much like the 1st Matrix, enough action at the beginning to get you interested, then they tell the story so you have an understanding of what's going on, then they get back to the action. The character development is subtler, in that you discover the inner workings of Selena as she does. In this type of story it works. You can't go into this movie expecting Terms of Endearment or Casablanca. It is what it is, an action/horror flick. It does the action very well; the horror part is more shock value then actual horror, like most so-called horror movies these days. The acting is decent. Nobody really stands out as far as the acting, good or bad, which I like, because it keeps 1 character from dominating the film. All the characters I thought blended well into the story. So you care more about what's going on, then who is doing what. I give it a 10 out of 10. Because it is very good in its genre, it's the best sci-fi/action movie since Matrix. I recommend it to any action movie buff. I if you liked Blade, you'll love this!

Why do people not understand
4 July 2003
Warning: Spoilers
I think people are upset because they don't understand, so they try to downplay how good this movie is. Are their flaws, of course there are... the entire sequence with Morpheus' empowerment speech & that ludicrously long "jungle" dance scene, as well as Trinity & Neo's love scene... all of that could have been left out.

But most of the movie is just right. If you cant except the premise of the movie, THE MATRIX IS A SIMULATION. SO THEY PRETTY MUCH CAN DO WHAT EVER THEY WANT. Then why watch the movie. Go see The Pianist or something else. The Matrix movies are for people like me. I am tired of thoughtless action movies with no plot, so they are essentially life action film of someone else's video game highlights (i.e. Mission Impossible 2, & Blade 2) & I'm tired of well acted drama's that are so boring you need no dose & jolt cola to make it thru to find out the final resolution (i.e. insomnia.. decent movie, but watch when you just get out of bed after 9 hours of sleep & have had 2 espresso's.) The Matrix Reloaded has an interesting premise, great action, decent acting by everyone except, Keanu. (he is duller than back side of a plastic knife, Keanu. Do us all a favor. WAKE UP! SHOW SOME ENTHUSIASM. You're getting $15 million a film...) Now for some interesting tidbits ***SPOILERS*** Check out the video game "Enter the Matrix' it helps explain some things & also shows some scenes that could have been in the movie, but instead were made for the game. The fight scene between Ballard (Roy Jones Jr.) & Seraph (the Oracle's protector) is very cool. Also, the way they explain why the Oracle is a different person now actually took some thought & was cleverly done. I don't know if that will be explained in the next movie, but it is in the game. Also you learn that all the things that the Oracle mentioned to Neo are in the movie: Ghosts (the twins obviously); vampires (Persephone); & werewolves (the 2 guys in the room watching horror movies. Persephone shoots one of them, comments about silver bullets, and then tells the other to go tell her husband.) The Wachowski brothers put a lot of thought into these movies & everything they have spawned. And it shows! They deserve a lot of credit for changing the industry & how action movies are made, besides setting the new benchmark. Think about how many action movies use bullet time now.

One comment said most people probably didn't understand the intriguing conversation between Neo & the Architect. Maybe that's true. Most of the people I know thought he was a human. But that, in it self is a measuring stick of how good a movie is. People can discuss the different odds & ends of the movie at length because there is so much to think about. So please, if you haven't seen this, go check it out. If you have… Give credit where credit is due!

As good a movie as I have ever seen!
18 January 2002
I went in with very high expectations, mainly from it taking over #1 on the all time list here, but also because I loved the stories as a child. I am a sci-fi nut, & I love fantasy, so I was so looking forward to this. I have never seen a movie so complete & balanced in every way. You can see they took no shortcuts, or cheap tricks here. They went all out, cast, crew, special effects, & locations, everything was right on. I felt like I was in middle earth. Sets that you know for a fact are fake look totally real. The acting was on target not so overdone or gaudy that it took away from the scenery, but not so weak that it away from the character depth. I don't know that everyone should give this a 10, but it at least deserves an 8 from just about everybody. No movie ever made has been this anticipated & then surpassed all possible expectations. I agree with a previous comment, "This is what we expected from Star Wars: Episode I". All I add to that is this, "& hope to see from Episode II!"

A surprisingly good movie
17 December 2001
I never saw the original movie. So i really didnt know what to expect. I am from Las Vegas, so i love movies that take place there. That having been said. I really didnt have any expectations, but any I had were exceeded. The plot was imaginative & the planning of the robbery & the way it was carried out was unique. I never thought things would work out the way they did. If you like movies like Usual Suspects, Fight Club, & 6th Sense, check out Ocean's Eleven. I also like how realistic it was. Thou it pushed the fold at times, it never ventured into the realm of the ridiculous, like some movies i could mention (i.e. Mission Impossible 2) All in all, a very entertaining couple of hours spent. 4 out of 5

Great start, horrible ending
4 September 2001
Warning: Spoilers
CONTAINS SPOILERS Even with the the extremely stupid characters, the start of the movie was good. When i say stupid, I mean STUPID!! Almost insultingly stupid. NO ONE, & i mean NO ONE would have went back to that house. The main characters from Dumb & Dumber wouldn't have went back. Not to mention the incredibly stupid move of climbing down the well. I nearly walked out of the theater on that one. I'm sorry, no one on earth is that dumb. But even with that, the movie was still clinging to an "ok" rating. That is until they met the woman with the cats, that was the start of down hill. & it continued down from there. I fail to understand what the psychic ladies purpose was. Was she just there to have a black face in the movie. I really hope not. She was stupid & annoying, & no person in there right mind would have listened to her, she sounded as stupid as the siblings. She deserved to die as much as they did. I was cheering for them to die. I was absolutely p***ed that only the brother died. I was waiting for the sister and/or the psychic to join Darry. This movie sucked. Dont waste your money. Out of 10 it gets a 1.
