Rounders (1998)
Best poker movie
This is the best poker movie ever made. If you are young and getting into the game, it's a true catalyst for that excitement. It's also a good movie in general.
The Card Counter (2021)
3 is probably too high, trying to be nice
This film is so disconnected. Not exactly sure what they were trying to accomplish. Is it a card player movie or a character study of a former soldier? Neither one works, and they sure as hell don't work together. I'd waste your time playing solitaire or counting cards by yourself at home instead. Maybe learn to play that guitar in the corner of your spare bedroom. The one that's missing the G string.
What Lies Beneath (2000)
Underrated horror flick
This is an underrated horror film. Very well done and intense. Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Contact, Back to the Future) ventures into horror and succeeds.
New York: A Documentary Film (1999)
Worth the 5,000 hours
It's huge It's exhausting. It's exciting and educational. No, not New York City, but the 20 something hour documentary about it. The labarotory for capitalism, food, art and just about everything else you could imagine, NYC's history from its beginnings as New Amsterdam to 9/11 is done up well by Ric Burns (the not as famous brother of Ken). You may have to grease the palm of your significant other to pull off the time and effort required, but New York wouldn't have it any other way.
Bird Box (2018)
Cover your eyes, 'cause this movie is worse to watch than being killed by its invisible villian
An idea was there, but the execution wasn't. Production spent too much of the budget on a wasted John Malkovich character, and the other big name Sandra Bullock, and not enough on editing and all the other important items of a good movie. One of the characters is killed by the "villain" when he sees it on the security video on his computer screen, all the while the shades haven't been drawn behind him in the room, with the entire backdrop open to the same possibility. This all happening after they spent the previous 30 minutes of the film (well film is being too kind) covering all the windows and doors and imploring that nobody look outside. This is just one of the many fails. Cover your eyes, because this movie is worse to watch than being killed by its invisible villian.
The Walking Dead (2010)
Had promise, for a second
The first season of this show was occasionally interesting and seemed to have promise. However it quickly turned into one of the worst shows of all time. The same story is recycled over and over, with a few new C actors thrown in for good measure (and a career footnote). The writers had a great opportunity to expand the scope of this post apocalyptic world, but never chose to. Instead it's scene after long drawn out scene of loathsome characters talking in tired narratives. Don't waste your time.
