Good Sam (2022)
Just not believable
I'm dumping this show after 1.5 episodes. Too much bickering, not enough medicine. I can't stand the Dad doctor & the other characters are bland. There've been 3 patients treated in 2 eps. Not why I watch medical shows. I listed to myself the 14 medical shows I've watched most eps of (several 10 or more seasons) plus 2 ME shows. This ties with General Hospital as the worst. It's more of a soap opera itself than a medical drama.
And it's annoying that they still don't say where the show is set, a MUST in most TV shows. Just shots of a lakeside skyline that I don't recognize.
Good Sam: Pilot (2022)
This Medical Drama addict is VERY disappointed!
I'll give the show another episode's try, in the hopes that the original pilot was used & that subsequent episodes made after being "picked up" are better. But I nearly turned Episiode 1 off several times out of boredom & disbelief. The very first scene was over-the-top overacted.
I've watched almost every medical drama on TV since St. Elsewhere. There've been MANY. Each of the newer ones has a fresh "hook" to make it stand out. I could not figure out what new approach Good Sam was bringing to the table. If the "hook" is the hospital's nepotism, it FAILS in believability.
There was some humor in the dialogue, but the words weren't delivered with humor. Sophia Bush's character was not believable as a someone capable of being cardio chief; she was more like a bright-but-insecure intern.
There were several times when the dialogue & music gave me flashbacks to General Hospital. Prime time shows shouldn't remind me of soap operas unless THAT is their "hook" & they're meant to be humorous.
The debates during the diagnostics were the same as in every medical drama since House, but there was no character-building during this. All the characters were bland, picked from Medical Drama Central Casting. Except for Jason Isaacs, whose weird plastic surgery creeped me out.
I also disliked that the show never said WHERE the hospital was located. Michigan was mentioned as cold, but with the clumsy dialogue, it wasn't clear if that was a hint. I did not recognize the skyline. If it's set in Detroit, just say so! It's filmed in Toronto - why not make it more believable by setting it there? But they mentioned STATE law, not PROVINCE law.
This is by far the lowest rating I've ever given an episode.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Could be PG-13 except for the cussing
This is a fast-paced very-dark comedy/thriller about a woman seeking revenge on those males who prey upon impaired women, in addition to enlightening those who dismiss such assaults as "he said/she said". Having heard reviews & commentary about the movie for months before finally being able to see it, I noticed no scenes that would give this an R rating - except for the copious & Very Adult language. It's a testament to Emerald Ferrell's Oscar-winning screenplay that most of the actual violence readily appears in our imaginations, while not actually on-screen. This movie should be required viewing for older teens & all college students, to continue spreading Cassie's (and Ferrell's) message.
News of the World (2020)
I now see how the hatred of the South for wealthy Yankees began
We liked "News of the World" a lot. It's a man's odyssey through the post-apocalyptic towns of post-Civil War Texas, making a living by reading newspapers from across the country to gatherings of those without access or ability to get the news. There's a tinge of a "True Grit" vibe (unwillingly traveling with a young girl), but the true focus is on the lonely traveller, not the child. Some parts feel like a classic exciting western, some parts feel like a character drama, and other parts subtly portray the socioeconomics of 1870's southern Texas. We see scenes that show how the hatred of Texans for Yankees goes back to Restoration, giving some unexpected empathy to some Texans, but also showing racism at its nastiest.
