Our Flag Means Death: Wherever You Go, There You Are (2022)
a legitimate masterpiece!
This season finale is just perfect.
Firstly seeing Mary's side of the story and realising that living with Stede was actually just as insufferable for her as it was for him puts everything she said and did in the flashbacks in perspective.
Ed's emotional journey, accepting himself and his sadness and channeling it to art is marvelous, I loved seeing the support of the crew like that!
Then Stede gets to grow as a person, realise what and who he is, who he loves and who he's meant to be and does the most elaborate, over the top, silly thing he could do to go back to his love is so big, he truly seems so happy.
Meanwhile Izzy destroys Ed's healing process and makes him revert to a persona even harsher than blackbeard - the kraken. People are drowned, toes are cut, crews are separated and feelings are intense - we'll see how this turns out next season!
The writing and acting of this finale is extremely perfect.
#JusticeForLucius.
Our Flag Means Death: Act of Grace (2022)
What makes Ed happy is... you.
So emotional, oh my god!
You can truly see the love they all have for each other.
I cried when Ed lied for Stede (that he killed Nigel himself), when he protected him with the act of grace, when the crew defended Stede as a real pirate together, ugh!
The kiss scene was absolutely beautiful. So accurate and so touching and just everything I ever wanted. The gasp I had when it happened was surreal - i'm so not used for these kinds of shows to not be main-couple queerbait, and the whole thing being canon in s1 is so amazing!
Everything that happens after the kiss is so gut-wrenching, with perfect soundtrack and amazing writing, it all just falls into place just right for episode 10.
Our Flag Means Death: We Gull Way Back (2022)
nobody messes with Calico Jaaaack!
One of the funniest episodes ever. Will Arnett's performance as Calico Jack is so funny! The entire arc of CJ and Stede both being jealous at each other for their relationships with Blackbeard just works so well. Not only does it help Ed figure out what he really wants and what he really needs, we love seeing jealous Stede (and it's just so fitting in the rom-com setting of it all).
The costume department did such a wonderful job I can practically SMELL CJ through the screen.
The "the chain" sequence in the end of the episode is wonderfully edited and made, and it made me fall in love with the show even more.
You came back. Never left.
Our Flag Means Death (2022)
absolutely perfect!
Incredible show!!! I heard of it as the "gay pirate show" and boy oh boy did it not disappoint.
The characters are extremely well-cast: Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi do an amazing job as the leading pair of this unusual rom-com, their dynamic is on point from the start and they make my heart melt. The rest of the crew is so well nuanced, every actor is hilarious and accurate in their own way in the smallest little ways and as a whole - every single one of them got into my heart! No wonder this show gathered such a fanbase - the actors and writers and fans just feel like a big, queer, chosen family and for a great reason.
Our Flag Means Death: The Best Revenge Is Dressing Well (2022)
When you cut loose you really cut loose!
I love it when Stede can go really wild! On one side we have Ed and Stede, trying to work their (clearly neurodivergent) charms on a ship full of aristocrats - dealing with feelings of inferiority and with some harsh passive aggression. On another side, Frenchie and Olu are inventing pyramid schemes - taking the situation they're in and using it for their benefit against the terrible slave owner aristos. Then on the third side we have a new romance blooming between Lucius and Pete, between Lucius and Fang, and a new rivalry between Lucius and Izzy. Lucius sure is a busy bee. We establish taking charge of a nasty situation in their environment - making the bad people turn against themselves, profiting off of them and telling the mean boss you're doing things your way. Then a lovely lovely romantic scene by the moonlight - melts my heart. If I could, I'd give it 11/10.
Our Flag Means Death: Discomfort in a Married State (2022)
A slightly slower one
On the one hand, I think the way they show Stede's past with Mary is brilliant and amazing - you can feel his hurt so much. The interaction with Ed is so soft and there's an immediate bond, you can definitely feel they're already friends. Kind of a meant-to-be situation. The lighthouse trick they pulled was beautiful and seeing the crew working and cheering together is heartwarming. However, I felt the progression of this episode was too slow for me, and then way too fast in the end. The brief conversation acknowledging Jim's gender is brilliant and spot-on. That's the way to do it, folks! Genius.
Our Flag Means Death: Pilot (2022)
Perfect opening for the show
The pilot is brilliantly written and directed to just introduce us to the crew and set the tone of the show - with both serious and mostly hilarious moments. You can feel how the crew is still new and how the stage is set for them to become a brilliant family. Hilarious performance from Rhys Darby (Stede Bonnet) and Rory Kinnear (Captain Nigel Badminton), as well as Nathan Foad (Lucius spriggs), Samba Schutte (Roach), Samson Kayo (Oluwande Boodhari) and Joel Fry (Frenchie).
Full of funny one liners and generally so feel-good. Made me fall in love personally with every single character! Highly recommended.
