12 Monkeys (1995)
8/10
Interesting, confusing, compelling

12 Monkeys was quite a unique movie. Fugitive James Cole is sent back into 1996 to prevent a virus that wiped out 5 billion people. Things go awry, where he is first sent back to 1990 and thrown into a mental institution when trying to explain himself. In this institution he meets Jeffrey Goines, an insane patient whose dad is a scientist, and Kathryn Railly, a psychologist. Cole is then sent to 1996 where he finds Dr. Railly and kidnaps her, forcing to drive him to Philadelphia to find the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, who are said to have created the virus, lead by Jeffrey Goines.

The story was well thought out and sure had effort put into it, especially the unique take on time travel, where no matter what everything is destined to happen, even things that, to James Cole, didn't seem to happen yet. I also enjoyed how the movie went pretty convoluted and confusing towards the end, with plot turns I didn't expect in the slightest. 12 Monkeys isn't quite a snappy movie; it has quite a bit of build up, yet when it reaches what it's getting to it's great. In a way the same could be said on Stanley Kubrick's movies...but this isn't a Stanley Kubrick movie, so there's no reason to bring that up.

I recommend this movie. It has a couple of plot holes (only with the time travel), yet it's not too bad to affect my outlook on the movie.
