12 Kilometers (2016)
Modern horror with a classic feel
I thoroughly enjoyed this - smart, grown up horror that looks and sounds fantastic.
I got strong "The Thing" vibes tonally...that sense of building dread in a remote and enclosed location....and the 80's setting and hints of Carpenter in the soundtrack also add to that...but it felt like it's own thing...not a homage.
Well worth a watch for fans of classic horror...especially as it does not patronise the audience by explaining too much or being obvious....it leaves you wondering.
It also felt very immersive - there were moment where I was sucked in completely...and that doesn't often happen for me.
Hats off to everyone involved, it's a great idea, executed with style.
Death Camp (2022)
Old school teen horror goodness
Has that classic 80s teen horror feel. One to watch with friends, you'll laugh, be grossed out, and try to guess the twists. I thought it was a lot of fun. It's clearly a low budget movie but made with a ton of spirit. I found it took me back to being taken to the video store by my older brothers and picking out the grossest and goriest films we could find, judging the cover. I'm assuming it's filmed on video but it looks like 16mm, which adds to that feeling of the "video nasty" era. Although the film does contain some intense scenes, it's not super violent or gory...but has a satanic witchcrafty twist on the "cabin in the woods" trope.
