Ye duniya oot-patanga, kitthe haath te kitthe taanga!
4 September 2010
My, my, my! This motion picture doesn't cease to amaze me! Khosla Ka Ghosla is one movie you could watch over and over again, in good times, in bad times, and in times which can't be categorized under either. This is just a movie for all seasons!

Now, why would i dare appreciate a movie without giving a single reason? That's because this movie doesn't need a reason to be liked! And even if the critic in you strives to find a prominent reason, you'd be in riches! A near-flawless depiction of an urban Indian middle-class family leaves you amazed, and very much in splits. The mortals who've had a fortune to spend their childhoods in the lanes of our own Delhi will undoubtedly understand the otherwise some lost-in-translation jokes. But, do not be repelled by this statement, this movie is for all of us. The theme is extremely topical but dealt in a humorous manner by a debut director Dibakar Bannerjee. And by gollies! Does he deliver!

The movie covers the chronicles of an average Indian family struggling to come in terms with a fact that their hard-earned land has been captured by a land-shark, and how they react in such a situation. The characters look so real and endearing that you could confuse them as one of your own distant uncles! Anupam Kher has played the typical 55-yr- old-man character before in "Saaransh" with utter perfection, and he does it again here with élan. Boman Irani has to be given a special mention for a mere fact that it's a tough job looking like an ostentatious Punjabi builder when you've been brought up as a Parsi all your life. And believe me, he could pass on as a Punjabi any given day of his life. All the other actors, namely, Ranvir Shorey, Kiran Juneja, Vinay Pathak, Parveen Dabbas, Naveen Nischol, Tara Sharma, etc. are wonderfully sketched out and believable. "Believable" being the key word here. The attention to detail is so strong that such a seemingly light comedy makes you observe novel mannerisms every time you watch it. Go for it, and laugh your ass off!

Because, times, they're a changing!
27 June 2009
Now, this is what we call the power of cinema. I always have had a notion in my mind that movies should be a medium to showcase the raw potential of a director and the actors in an unstrung way, that is, whatever is shown on the screen is believable and can be related to. Kalyug breaks all fronts, and how! It's a new-age Mahabharata, India's ancient epic mythological book, and the characters are so vulnerably powerful in it. It's going to be years to come before any Indian director can possibly overshadow the sheer strength of this motion picture. Even Benegal can't strive to make this movie again as it possesses hardly any scope for improvement. Hats off to Shashi Kapoor and Anant Nag!

Cry like baby...and don't be embarrassed!
2 January 2008
I watched Taare Zameen Par with my younger brother Anmol, who's of the same age as Ishaan, the main protagonist in the movie(played so lovingly, creatively and enthusiastically by Darsheel). Now,some people may feel too embarrassed to show their emotions in front of others, especially their own younger siblings, who consider their elders as their role-models.Even I was one of them. But Aamir Khan had other plans. He made me cry in front of my brother. And as the movie progressed,he made me cry again. And again.I had filled buckets in the cinema hall.I was too ashamed to face others sitting in the hall, let alone my brother. But voila! What do I see!!The cinema's flooded with tears.Youth,middle-age,old.Doesn't matter!Rivers flowing out of the tough-looking uncles, the 40+ aunts can't get enough of their already-wet handkerchiefs.Even the local mafia gang members are trying to hide their disfigured faces in oblivion!

I haven't seen such a site.A silent atmosphere beckons when Ishaan Awasthi cries out to his mother with unconditional love.He even manages to make you feel nostalgic when he's thrown out of the classroom for not doing his homework.I always knew about Dyslexia, but I never realised that it could make me cry with sadness and joy all at once.

Talking of Aamir Khan, Probably the thing that I loved the most about him(even more than him helping Ishaan realising his purpose in life),was his late entry, that is,just before the interval crept in.Being such a big superstar,he could've come a bit earlier in the flick to command a bit more screen-time but he actually did not.He gave more importance to the content of the movie, unlike what most of the Indian stars or directors woud not have risked doing!

Taare Zameen Par(TZP) is a very valiant take on the plight of the delicate children in India, who, even before knowing how to stand on their legs probably, have to undergo through the grueling trauma of their parents' infinite expectations. The expectations of their children doing well academically and going on to be 'sensible and responsible' citizens of their country when they grow up,so that they can be 'accepted' by the 'Indian social norms'.This is a bitter truth & every parent can relate to it,and hopefully can get some notion of letting their wards relax a bit to enjoy their youth to the fullest and also encouraging them to pursue the career of their choice and not be mere mannequins.

Go,see this wonderful tale of a little dyslexic boy being helped by a cool teacher, reminded of his own similar past,to follow his dreams.

The movie's ended in the cinema hall. What do I see?My young 8-year brother has tears in his eyes too.The movie has touched his tiny heart very deeply. And I've more than accomplished my aim of making his Sunday better.Thank You Mr. Aamir Khan!

Hrishikesh Da is director par excellence!
16 December 2007
I finished watching Abhimaan 15 minutes ago.I just loved this movie.Amitabh and Jaya share an envious chemistry in the flick and it does wonders to what the film tried depicting.Hrishikesh Mukherjee was one of the best directors around that time, and this is one of his gems and a milestone in Indian cinema. This is a movie that people won't get tired watching even half a century after it was been made, because the issues that Hrishikesh Da tackled in his movies were very a part of an Indian middle-class society and they still do prevail.

Watch this movie to feel the warmth of good film-making. Hrishikesh Mukherjee leaves the audience in tears in the end,as he never gets tired of doing that.Wonderful, and lovely!

Speechless,Babumoshai!!
15 December 2007
I just finished watching this beautiful movie 10 minutes earlier, and I hardly have any words to describe how wealthy I am feeling right now.First of all,I must tell you that I am an avid, self proclaimed movie-freak,but I must admit I never thought highly of old Hindi movies, even if they have been showered with numerous critical acclaims and awards et al.But Asit Sen's wonderful masterpiece "Khamoshi" and "Anand" have proved me wrong miserably. This movie was intense and left me immensely depressed and crying buckets in the middle of the night. It might well have been the best movie by the director-par-excellence Hrishikesh Mukherjee,of whom I've been hearing of for the last 20 years of my rather uneventful life.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee used the to-be very popular phrase "Babumoshai" in this flick of his.Raj Kapoor, another legend in Indian cinema, used to address Hrishikesh Mukherjee by the same gesture.Rajesh Khanna lovingly uses this phrase throughout the movie to call Amitabh Bachchan, sometimes to tease him,he other times in a serious tone.

That's where the unorthodox beauty of this movie lies.Anand Saigal(played in an unparalleled way by Rajesh 'Superstar' Khanna) is a happy-go-lucky man suffering from an incurable disease. He keeps other people happy.Bhasker Bannerjee(Amitabh Bachchan) is the doctor who's taking care of Anand in his last stages, and is spell-bound by the energy Anand still oozes and the zeal with which he's accepted his current living moments, that are soon to vanish. The story revolves around these two characters who give a new dimension to acting in serious cinema.

"Anand" won the national award for being the best picture of the year 1971.This was far before Amitabh became a mega-superstar.He displays some magical moments in this movie.Rajesh Khanna is mesmerising as the main protagonist. He seriously could act, brought tears to anybody who saw this amazing motion picture. The last scene deserves special notice, and I am not going to spoil the party for the people who might see this movie after reading this review of mine,by revealing it."Anand" is a movie that could only come once in a lifetime and it left me speechless.

Om Shanti Om (2007)

This movie is a super-hit,sans any script!
12 November 2007
After all the pre-release drama and hype,it finally comes down to the opening night.Om Shanti Om,tipped and predicted to be the biggest blockbuster of the year, lives up to all the expectations.Earning a mammoth Rs. 19 cr. on the very first Friday, this one's sure is living up to what it was anticipated to be.Very much a Shahrukh Khan potboiler.Farah Khan proves yet again that she is better off in the choreography arena only. The movie lacks a script altogether. But having Shahrukh Khan as an ambassador can do wonders for any waste product, which he surely has done to this flick.Deepika Padukone looks stunning in this one.A nice launchpad for a Badminton champ's daughter, who's bowling over some of the cricket champs in India(not quite literally).Shahrukh Khan may be the most bankable star still, but this movie is no Swades, and so no Oscar rumours this year(and don't I thank all the Gods for that!).An entertainer throughout,go watch Om Shanti Om for fun in the evening, but don't forget to leave your brains at home!

Saawariya (2007)

Very much Bhansali, yet not really him!
10 November 2007
After Black, which was quite a milestone in Indian cinema, anything he would make would have been liked by the audience. Then came Saawariya.I can confidently say, nobody else would have been able to make a movie so visually alluring and spectacularly stunning. It's just a treat for an individual's eye. But,having high expectations from this director was not really a mammoth thing, and I feel sorry that he hasn't lived up to those pre-release drama. If Saawariya was made by any other director,it would have been well-received by the audience and critics alike. He's a dream director ,that's for sure, but the movie lacked a much needed script.Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor could not have asked for a better film-maker to launch them. But still the meager runtime of two hours and eight minutes looks a bit too long. Regarding the performances,Rani, playing a prostitute for her second successive movie, portrays her character beautifully well. She again proves herself being the queen of Bollywood.Ranbir Kapoor has done a good job in his role as a happy-go-lucky dreamer. His jawline and face-cut looks strikingly similar to that of his mother Neetu Kapoor.Sonam Kapoor looks beautiful and has done a fine job too.Salman Khan didn't have much screen-time to show his potential, but he looks a tad too old. All in all,Saawariya, visually speaking, looks and feels like very much Sanjay Leela Bhansali, but critically speaking,it's not really Sanjay Leela Bhansali!

Irfan Khan should've got an Oscar for this!!
23 July 2007
Firstly,I'd like to know more about this director Tigmanshu Dhulia. And why hasn't any producer taken notice of his talent till now.The lad has made such a fine movie that from what I see, this has put the Oscar winners to shame! And no freaking major recognitions for this movie in the country in which it was made and also which it has depicted so perfectly in its lens.Such movies are hard to make, and probably even tougher to get recognised.Isn't it?Irfan Khan has broken all the acting fronts through his debut performance as Ranvijay Singh,a wannabe politician, who takes up against the reigning student leader in his university, the character being portrayed so flawlessly by Ashutosh Rana.Irfan Khan has immortalised the character and the movie itself,at least in the hearts and brains of the ones who've seen this flick.Despite hailing from the state of Rajasthan,he's played the part of a UP guy and perfected the accent so easily,it makes you stand up,take notice and applaud the efforts.Jimmy Sheirgill is good as the lead, but Hrishita Bhatt leaves a lot to be asked. She was arguably the weakest link in the movie, which was dominated by the great performances and the dialogues of its characters. When I saw this movie,I became Irfan Khan's fan,and I can assure the same fate for any other cinema lover! This movie is as realistic as it can get and I simply love that for Indian cinema.

This has stunned me!!
17 July 2007
Well,I've got no words for it!Simply putting it,this movie would surprise you because you haven't even heard of the director Sudhir Mishra(unless you've seen "Chameli"),this movie will shock you because of its realistic storyline shown in a simple yet powerful manner, and it would stun you to the core because of its intensity and the rawness quotient. This was a story that was begging to be told.Despite movies like Vaastav and Kurukshetra,Indian politics was still not depicted as it should have been. This movie has broken all barriers. The performances have everything to write home about.Shiny Ahuja shines among all.Chitrangda Singh proves that a beauty has got brains too,and Kay Kay Menon is the dark-horse of Indian cinema, this performance tells the story.Watch this movie and experience it taking over you.

Mahesh Bhatt at his unapologetically best!
13 July 2007
Well,I saw this movie late last night, and I must say I wouldn't have seen a better movie.Mahesh Bhatt had set a standard for him in the 80s to be the I-don't-care-a-damn-about-the-commercial-success director. And he practiced what he preached unlike many others. This movie is a perfect example. Not only was Saraansh India's official entry to the Academy Awards that year, but it also marked the beginning of one of India's most able actors till date-Anupam Kher. He's as good as it can get in this flick. The movie's realistic portrayal of the Indian society deserves a standing applause and the performances were just the icing on the cake.Rohini Hattangidy shines as she always has.Mahesh Bhatt has proved time and time again that this country would always miss his trademark movies for decades to come now.

Hilarious but mindless!
18 June 2007
I rented Golmaal's DVD just because Ajay Devgan is my favorite actor. But after watching this movie,I was shocked by his choice of signing his movies. He has portrayed quite a number of substantial roles in the past and continues to do so,but I haven't really figured out his judgment in selecting his commitments till now. Anyway,Golmaal is a good slapstick comedy, meant for time-pass only.Arshad Warsi,as usual, stands out in this movie too.The surprise package is Tushar Kapoor who delivers a praise-worthy performance too as a vocally-challenged person.Sharman Joshi leaves a lot to be asked for.His best performance still remains his portrayal of Sukhi in "Rang De Basanti".Ajay Devgan is flawless, but these kinds of roles don't really suit him. The movie,as a whole,is well packaged and well cinematographed. The content is weak, and despite the not-so-good reviews by the critics, the movie went on to be a major commercial hit. We know that mindless comedies still do work in the subcontinent. This movie is a perfect example.

Prakash Jha is improving!
18 June 2007
According to how I see it,no one else could have directed the movie other than Prakash Jha himself, and no other actor could have portrayed the role of Ajay Shastri better than Ajay Devgan. The movie has a strong and realistic plot.Just like Gangaajal, his previous movie,Prakash Jha has chosen to depict Bihar's social problems on the silver screen. Apharan is more realistic than Gangaajal, but there is less scope for performances.Nana Patekar is brilliant as the ruthless convicted politician. He had won a popular award too for that role.Ajay Devgan is flawless in his portrayal of a young student aspiring to be a cop in the corrupt society, but circumstances force him to be on the wrong side of the law.Bipasha Bau is no more than an eye-candy.Mohan Agashe is great too. Overall, this movie is well-directed,well-acted and has a good script to boast of.Such movies can alter the face of Indian commercial cinema is they are stopped being called as mere "off-beat" or "parallel" cinema. Prakash Jha's improved, and the maturity shows on the screen. If you thought Gangaajal was great, wait till you watch Apharan.
