A Cold Grave (2024)
Dark and Atmospheric Found Footage Worth A Watch
Hits you in the face right in the beginning with what is happening and what you will see. Main character narrates the action well and pulls you in. There are some great suspenseful spots where you find yourself wanting the scene to hurry and show you what is about to happen as it makes you suffer and wait. Good twist at the end brings it full circle and teaches a lesson: don't go where others have disappeared. The acting was good. The sound and lighting can be very spotty in these indie films but this group has their act together and there were no issues throughout the film. It is a short running time which I appreciate since most movies are too long now.
The Invited (2017)
Love Creepy Cult Films - This One Delivers
What is most creepy to me about cult films is how the group draws in the newest people. Things feel normal for a while then begin to get creepy. There is always a point that you feel they need to get away, but of course, they stay. You can't help but get emotionally charged when they make that critical mistake. This one was short but kept my attention with a satisfying ending. The main characters were very believable and their relationship seemed genuine. Sound and video were good quality which can sometimes be a problem in indie films. Happily, there were no problems here. Just good creepy fun.
American Royalty (2022)
Fascinating Documentary On An Often Overlooked American Tradition
Interesting documentary that holds your attention throughout. I really liked the perspectives from the different generations of contestants and winners. It reflected the societal norms of their tie and what the pageant evolved into to suite the needs and audience of the day. Great job bringing together the long list of those involved with vivid accounts of their experience. You can tell what a large impact it had on their lives so many years and decades later. Recommended for anyone that is interested in modern American cultural history. Sound and video quality were excellent here, which can sometime be an issue with documentaries.
Forest of Death (2023)
Solid indie horror with throwback feel
Four friends rent a cabin in the woods. What could go wrong? Classic feeling romp in the forest turns scary as a local describes the local lore giving the foursome food for thought. As usual, they dismiss the warning. The fun continues...for a while. Good chemistry with the actors and good flowing story. Jump scares and we'll-paced tension keep your interest. The multiple montages get repetitious. They could have developed the characters and relationships a little more instead. Give you more of a reason to care about these people. Overall, a solid indie flick with an 80s vibe. If you like the old stuff, you dig this one.
