Way Out West (1937)
Lake Laurel & Hardy not in "Way Out West"
One of your reviewers commented that the water spot that Laurel & Hardy utilized in "Way Out West" was, in reality, a spot on the Roach lot known as "Lake Laurel & Hardy." Another added that it was dedicated to them in the '50's by Hal Roach. Both statements are completely erroneous, and I would like to correct them for the record.
"Lake L&H" was simply a little pool, like a swimming pool, right behind the studio offices on Washington Blvd. in Culver City. The pond scenes in "Way Out West" were filmed somewhere else, not at the tiny pool. Roach didn't dedicate the pool in their name. That was done by the "This is Your Life" program. Mr. Roach had nothing to do with it, except that he showed up with his son, who then ran the studio, to be photographed with the plaque that dedicated the "lake." From existing photos, there must have been a dozen people there for that dedication, each one taking a turn to pose with Stan & Ollie at the plaque. (One shows them posing with their own wives.)

details about Elliot reid's appearance on this episode
Eliott Reid appeared on an episode of the "Ed Sullivan Show" doing impressions. I remember his impression of John F. Kennedy, who may have been already elected, or was just running for President at the time, depending upon the date. Reid was, without a doubt, the very first person in a long line of performers to imitate Kennedy on television with this performance -- at least the first to do it on a network broadcast. I remember watching it. He was excellent. No one had ever attempted it before such a large audience. It was the first time I ever saw Reid. I see that he was already a veteran actor. I just watched him in "Inherit the Wind," and I can easily see that he had the facial quality and the build to support him in the imitation. I don't think anyone else has ever written about this.
