Jigoku Shôjo (2019)
It was alright, but could have been much better
I watched the anime series (season 1 and season 2, missed season 3) in the past, therefore I was really looking forward to watch the movie. The opening was strong. First half was alright. But 2nd half onwards becomes such a drag and predictable.
Reasons for disappointment, **spoiler** alert from here onwards:
There is no explanation for the existence of hell girl and her subordinates, meaning anyone who hasn't watched the anime series would have no clue whatsoever about them other than being a group of hell couriers.
A key element was missing from the movie that was present in the anime series: every character who has sent someone to hell is supposed to have a mark on their chest, indicating that they will go to hell too when the time comes. That is potential journalist material too.
I don't understand the logic behind killing off the journalist prematurely, a better narrative would be having him survive through the whole ordeal and obtain all the materials he needed to publish an article, and perhaps did it successfully or get killed off in the end by someone else. Either way would have made a better ending than this.
