Missing (2023)
Just Not For Me
I really didn't like this film because I don't like it when I can figure out what's going to happen from the beginning.
I could never get into the popular t.v. Show, "24" because the constant "cliffhangers" bored me quickly.
With all of that said, the main actors are spectacular and the mother, daughter and Javier were all terrific in their roles. I cared about them. The writing/plot/whatever that particular device is that tries to keep you guessing - well, it just didn't.
Of course I watched it to the end. I adored the main actors who carried this film.
I don't look at the parental-type stuff, like PG or any of that, but it seems to me that this would be a wonderful film for a younger audience.
Love & Death (2023)
Comments and not a review
IMDB used to have the 'forum' section where one could leave random comments but I'm just leaving them in the "review" section, so be warned.
* I gave it a ten-star rating because of Elizabeth Olsen. The mini-series is excellent, but Olsen pulled off a level of nuance that was completely necessary for this story to be told. I've seen this level of nuance in actors like Vera Farmiga in her recent mini-series, Five Days at Memorial and all of her other dramatic work (including that wonderful, Korean film).
I will now watch anything Olsen has been in because she's so good and I had no idea.
* Costume, Set, Music, EVERYTHING was *so* reminiscent of that era that it's the first fictional representation of that era that really took me back. I am going to re-watch it for the mere fact that I started having memories come back to me & that was amazing to me. I was really transported to that era and how that type of, "hangover housewife", was still running things in middle class & middle-upper-class homes at that point in history: by "hangover housewife", I mean a woman who was married around the time of the second wave of the feminist movement in the US. Obviously not every woman of that era has a story interesting enough for a mini-series.
You People (2023)
Solid Rom-Com
This was a solid rom-com. Rom-coms are supposed to be "formulaic" (that's why they have a label, "rom-com"). It means that serious issues will be brought to the fore and they will work out in a happy way. It means that you are going to get a happy ending. They are modern-day fairy tales that make you laugh.
This particular rom-com had some dramedy as is the style these days. And the drama bits were not too heavy and they made me laugh.
If you are in film school at NYU or whatever, you might not be up for a rom-com.
If you are very young, this might seem extremely lame to you. And I don't know why, but I do know that when I was young, rom-coms got on my last nerve.
I'm old now and I care for my mom 24/7 and have been watching her die slowly with Alzheimer's for the past five years. When I watched this movie, I forgot my living hell for a minute.
Hip-Hop Evolution (2016)
Love it just one question
I loved watching every minute of this. It gathers everyone that is still alive and does extensive interviews about the music, the times, etc. If you love rap/hip hop, you have to watch this.
I just want to know why Slick Rick and "the human beat box", Doug E. Fresh weren't mentioned or if I missed that? La Di Da Di is *the most sampled* song in all of hip hop/rap and The Show is probably the second most sampled. Or maybe I've got it backwards? Either way, Snoop was the first rapper to remake another rapper's song (La Di Da Di) and everyone samples Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick (Biggie's, "Hypnotize"; MIssy Elliott samples them in her music). I mean, the most sampled song in all of rap deserves mention and Doug E. Fresh & Slick Rick...again, did I miss any mention of them?
But this is still a most incredible docuseries that needed to be made and is the best thing I've seen on the history of rap.
Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones (2019)
Just wasn't funny
I like watching standup and I admire Dave Chappelle, but I only laughed once or twice during this performance -- well, barely chuckled. I just didn't find anything funny. The audience was screaming with laughter as was Chappelle himself. I felt like a lot of his time on stage was spent with him laughing at his own jokes or at some inside jokes between the audience and him. And this is probably why I noticed that I wasn't laughing -- because of the constant interruptions where Chappelle and the audience are laughing hysterically. At points it felt like Chappelle and his audience were all stoned and I was the only sober one in the room, missing out on what was so funny.
I was mostly just bored. Chappelle can be so funny. I felt like he didn't try very hard and that this was a really sloppy performance.
This is probably more worth watching for the controversy it has created. For that I would recommend watching it so you can make up your own mind.
Quarry (2016)
Mad Men Meets Breaking Bad
I would have posted in the IMDb *forum* for this show if the forums still existed because this isn't really a review, but merely my random comments that echo what other reviewers have already said: finally, a good show.
I like to say that, "Mad Men Meets Breaking Bad" because this conveys the caliber of show that Quarry is in and it is not a literal comparison.
The setting of the show is an utter treat: Memphis, 1972. You can enjoy being transported back in time. Every character is so well written and acted that I never feel like they are "minor" characters. There is a scene in the third episode where Buddy (played by Damon Herriman) visits his mom in her home. This scene is golden. It showcases every element of why this show is so great: dialogue; complexity of plot and character; set, setting and costume (that house, its knickknacks, wall- hangings, furniture, carpet); and did I say dialogue?!
But do be warned that this is also a violent show. You can still watch it for the drama, but depending on your threshold for violence, you might need to turn your head away at times (or if that is still too much, then hopefully you can watch with a friend and s/he can fill you in on what you need to know while you go grab a snack). But it is the story and not the violence that makes Quarry suspenseful from beginning to end.
Watch it!
Cougar Town: Pilot (2009)
Okay But Could Be Improved
I'm more than half-way into the first episode and it could be way better if it cut the slapstick-style delivery of lines. The dialog would be far funnier if it were delivered in a staid fashion at least part of the time. It wouldn't hurt to copy a little bit of Nancy Botwin's style on Weeds. Weeds is successful for a reason.
Kudos to ABC for introducing a bunch of new comedies in a time when people need to laugh. And good for them for trying to have fun with a newer trend -- cougars.
But this show needs work. Namely the slapstick/silliness. The dialog is fine. The actors are fine (it is their delivery). I'm not fond of Cox's husband, but maybe if they clean his appearance up just a little bit and stop trying to make him completely over the top, he could turn into a really funny character.
I like seeing Cox in this role and hope the director(s) or whomever is responsible for this show will tell everyone to breathe more and talk more and screech a lot less.
Dillo con parole mie (2003)
Fun, Scenic Chick Flick
This was just a fun movie. But it was a well-made, fun movie that didn't drag at any point. However I must provide a few caveats: I have been to Greece on many occasions and stayed on Santorini for a little over a month. So I loved re-living that time through this film. I think they captured the lazy-island-feel that Santorini can have, as well as its beauty. The older film, "Summer Lovers" probably did the scenery a little bit better, but this was a much better film.
The story is fun too and this was a pleasant surprise because I was satisfied with the scenery and the neurotic female characters, but the story came through and that made it a movie that I could actually recommend to more people. Give it a look if you are a female and especially if you have been to Santorini.
Searching for Debra Winger (2002)
Good to Have on Record but Not Deep
This isn't a documentary that unfolds in a linear fashion where research into what it means to be a female in Hollywood is undertaken. This is simply a series of interviews with a whole lot of famous women and for that, it is important. I would love to see a similar film with Hollywood women from the thirties, forties and fifties. Having all of these women on record in the same place and at the same time is pretty cool.
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing women speak candidly on topics revolving around being a woman in Hollywood. The main focus is about being an aging female in Hollywood, but being a mother and an actress is also discussed as well as dating (or choosing not to date.) But this is about an elite set of women and of course you will find yourself rolling your eyes if you don't accept this fact at the beginning. It might sound like a lot of over- privileged women complaining but then you might have missed the point because this is supposed to be about being a woman in Hollywood and not a woman on "Main Street". And really, Hollywood sets the trends that we regular women eventually benefit from. So if older women are valued the way that older men are in Hollywood, we all do benefit from this.
******* Now in 2023 with no recollection of this documentary anymore, I'm definitely going to revisit it in light of what we now know Harvey Weinstein did to Arquette and others.
