Reviews
The Orville (2017)
Better than Star Trek, but they need to feed the actors.
This is just a quick sidenote, but I was watching S02E13 and was shocked by how incredibly skinny Adrianne Palicki is. She has absolutely no female hips. It made me go, "Ick!" I can imagine how weird she would look with no clothes on. It would be like like looking at a male child.
Anyway, I am just rambling at this point to fulfil the minimum number of required keystrokes to add this review, but I have to say that, even as a Star Trek fan, this show is, hands-down, more entertaining. The combination of genuinely serious and heartfelt moments, mixed with silly humour makes for a more realistic depiction of life. I am always bewildered, though, by the excessive amount of social alcohol consumption on the show. On or off duty, the leadership is portrayed as almost alcoholic. I doubt that, in a real world, any military personnel would be allowed to drink on the job or fraternize with lower ranks as easily as they do on this show.
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Anachronistically Confusing
I love the 1950's era, including clothing, music, architecture and post-war cultural changes, however, this movie, that was supposed to be set in the 50's, had several anachronisms that made me confused. There are several scenes that made me believe that the writers must have been on some hallucinogen when they were conceived, so perhaps this was intentional. But if it wasn't intentional, then the wardrobe department had no idea what they were doing. The men's clothing and hairstyles were 50's, the women's clothing, hairstyles, and makeup were mostly 60's and they all attended parties where the music and entertainment were from the 20's-40's. This all made for a very weird environment. Overall, however, I enjoyed the mystery and suspense and the acting was good.
UFO Sweden (2022)
Refreshing!
Finally, a movie that was worth watching this year... and it didn't come out of Hollywood. The pandemic must have put a real damper on movie production the past 3 years, because I haven't been able to find a movie that I can rate over a 5 out of 10, until now. I didn't invest much hope when I first sat down to watch this sci-fi gem, but was captivated all the way through. It has a sprinkle of Spielberg, mixed with a dash of Interstellar inspiration, but I did not mind, because the storyline was fresh, the acting good, and the emotions real. It contains a mix of serious realism and good-natured humour.
Nope (2022)
I'm not sure what I just watched.
This movie made me completely bewildered. I had to watch half the movie before any UFO action even began. The dialogue was incoherent and the plot was outright absurdity. The acting by
Daniel Kaluuya was atrocious. I thought I was was watching a brain-dead, stoner with no emotions. The storyline was so chopped up and irrelevent to the plot that you are left wondering what the writer was smoking when they hallucinated the script. I have only given two stars for the sake of the CG artist who must have worried about his career after wasting his time on this movie.
At this point, I am just using up the remainder of the minimum character limit that's required to write this review. I have nothng more to say.
Ugh!
Sharper (2023)
Finally found a movie in 2022-23 that doesn't absolutely suck.
Normally I would have rated this movie 8 out of 10, however, I am so bewildered at all the overly-critical reviews that I feel compelled to help remedy the under-rating. I found this movie refreshing and well done. A real source of entertainment in a sea of terrible movies to choose from over the past 3 years. Give it a chance.
There was a good mix of veteran and new actors, with good cinematography and interesting storyline. It somewhat reminds me of the movie The Grifters (1990) but less volatile and more relatable.
It is sad that the world is full of swindlers and frauds, but I guess we all have a love of money and the potential to be completely selfish.
M3GAN (2022)
Great story, weak acting.
Allison Williams was monotone throughout the entire movie. I swear she must suffer from alexithymia!
I was surprised that in 2022, a director actually decided to use animatronics mixed with a real child actor wearing a mask and silicone hand gloves. The fact that they half-pulled it off without any 3D is quite impressive. It goes to show that not everything needs to be done digitally.
Overall, the movie had a "Chucky" feel to it, with a modern twist.
The character that played the social worker just made me hate children's aid societies even more. It's as if parents have to be perfect these days, or the government will take them from you.
Anyway, all rambling aside, I somewhat enjoyed this movie. Especially when there are so many bad movies out there right now.
Seaspiracy (2021)
Typical biased documentary.
Yes, we have a huge problem. Yes, the answer to this problem seems simple. However, simply stopping the consumption of fish and reducing the fishing industry would be a disaster to the human food supply chain. As it is, we can barely feed our current global population. We can't live with over-fishing, and we can't survive without over-fishing. The real problem is over-population, not over-fishing. In any documentary, you will find great amounts of one-sided, short-sighted bias. Watch with discretion, and most importantly, reason.
The Card Counter (2021)
Great actors, poor acting.
A legendary director, a few great actors, and a good idea for a script should add up to a hit shouldn't it? Unfortunately, the pace ended up being too slow, the acting forced, the pauses between dialogue to long, and two plotlines that seemed to never converge. It almost seemed like the actors did not do their homework enough to know how to develop their characters. Everyone looked under-enthusiastic, and lines put out into the ether as if they were devoid of emotion. All around, a poor execution. I only continued to watch it all the way through, because, for the life of me, I could not tell where this movie was going to end up.
Les 7 jours du talion (2010)
Very, very, very disturbing.
I could only give this movie a 5 out of 10 because my conscience is wrestling with my appreciation. On the one hand, I would only give this move a 10 for acting and direction, however, my judgement would only give it a 1 if it requires a sick, disgusting movie to ignite peoples sense of morality.
Never in my life have I seen such a disturbing movie. This is a messed up script and an unsettling statement about the nature of humanity. In the very first scene, I was so disturbed that my head was spinning. I thought her corpse looked extremely realistic. Then, the torture scenes were more than I could handle. I shut this movie off after only 45 minutes. What kind of monsters are we that we feel we need to make such things?
To all the men out there who are so angry that they say they would do the same thing if ever this happened to their daughter, I say, be careful. As the truth states, "The things we dislike most in others are the characteristics we like least in ourselves." Men hate immoral sexual acts, because deep down, they know they have the capability of doing the same things. Hating on other men is just a manifestation of hating themselves. Both immoral sexual acts and extreme violence (as retribution) are totally unacceptable. I hope that this movie makes that clear to everyone.
Wolf (2021)
Ripoff!
This is a complete ripoff of the movie 'Like Dogs.' I don't understand how film companies think they can get away with this, especially when the two movies are released in the same year.
Together (2021)
Definitely a tour de force
I was amazed to see that two actors could be so realistic and believable for very long, non-stop scenes. These are two amazing actors, with all the nuances and emotions that go along with believable people. I was beginning to think that the corona virus had killed the movie industry, but this one has given me hope.
Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021)
Proof positive that most Japanese culture is nuts!
Why Nicholas... why? They must have paid you an awful lot of money to embarrass yourself.
