Challengers (2024)
3/10
A huge disappointment.
26 April 2024
I've heard and read many raving reviews of this movie, so it was impossible for me not to expect an amazing movie. Well, what a huge letdown it turned out to be... The script, in my opinion, is incredibly overrated by most reviewers. I found it boring, the story isn't interesting and the dialogues are weak. I didn't care about any of the three characters, didn't like any of them and didn't care what would happen at the end.

The direction is mediocre - not bad but not great either. A lot of praise was said about the tennis scenes but I didn't find them captivating or exhilarating.

The only two aspects of the movie I really enjoyed was the score and the attractive look of the young, fit bodies of the three. The score is amazing - rhythmic, pulsating, energetic and energizing. Their slim bodies are beautiful to look at. Zendaya probably could be a top model if she wanted.

3/10 from me.

Season 2 much worse than season 1
6 January 2024
Season 1 was OK for me, not amazing or excellent but just OK. Unfortunately, season 2 is much worse. The first two episodes are fine but then it all becomes ridiculous, especially the fighting and shootout scenes. The bad guys are always dumb and incompetent, and cannot shoot straight, while our 4 heroic former military police can fight like Bruce Lee combined with Jason Statham, never miss a target, and in general are fantastic and flawless - smart, tough, honorable and of course physically attractive. The guy playing the titular character looks the part but his acting is poor, he's basically a wooden plank. 3/10.

Napoleon (2023)

Awful.
26 November 2023
What a disappointment. This film is BORING. A movie with a huge budget, good actors, about a person as fascinating and complex as Bonaparte, who participated in more than 60 battles and had drama, triumphs and failures that would be enough for a few lifetimes, is... BORING! Nothing is well explained, it's unclear who is who beside Napoleon and Josephine. Several unnecessary sex scenes between the two. What's even worse is that it's unclear why the French nation would follow and worship this Napoleon as he's portrayed in this movie, because in this movie he seems a mediocre personality, without much charisma or extraordinary abilities. In addition, everything on the screen looks greyish blue, without vivid colors, and it is a bit depressing. I liked only two elements of this movie: musical score and costumes.

A very good slasher.
15 October 2023
As far as slasher thrillers go, this one is surprisingly good. The kills and the fight scenes are well done and not repetitious, the killer is effective and fearsome but not almighty or perfect, the group consists of various interesting character types, some of them unlikeable, others quite likeable - like in real life. The killer has a real grudge against them and a solid reason to want a revenge. I also like that the victims dont act in a dumb or nonsensical way and some show guts, bravery and solidarity with one another. It's well directed, well paced and well written. I think it's certainly better than the last two Scream movies.

A masterpiece.
11 October 2023
I've watched it at the Film Festival in Warsaw, Poland. In my opinion it's a masterpiece. Though it makes for a bleak and depressing viewing, as it demontrates the cynicism, barbaric cruelty and racism of the white colonizers towards the indigenous inhabitants of Patagonia at the end of the 19th century, it certainly is worth your time and the price of a cinema admission. I recommend watching it in a cinema, because it looks and sounds superbly. In fact every aspect of the filmmaking craft is excellent here: the direction, the script, acting, music and cinematography. Worth mentioning is the participation of the British ex-soldiers and a Texan in those events, it allows the film to indicate that the barbarity and greed demonstrated in Chile weren't something exceptional and peculiar but rather commonplace, similar atrocities were committed against the indigenous people in North America and by the British throughout their colonial empire.

Dreadful, apart from Statham.
27 September 2023
Jason Statham just about saves this movie from being a complete disaster. Statham is ok and the last 15 or 20 minutes are ok, all the rest is total rubbish mixed with garbage : the writing, the acting and the directing. Without Statham and the last 15 minutes this movie would get only one star, not three. Maybe the most disappointing are the fighting and action scenes, they are woefully directed and edited. And without good action this movie doesn't really have a reason to exist, other than the paychecks of its waning "stars". Stallone is shortly in this, and all he does and says is pretty dumb, so if you are a Sly fan don't waste your money on this.

It's surprisingly good, and fun to watch. Good script, excellent dialogue, and good acting, especially by Foxx and Parris. Highly recommended. It's surprisingly good, and fun to watch. Quite good.
13 July 2023
After many raving reviews I expected a top-notch, maybe the best so far, M:I film. I got disappointed a bit. A bit, not much, but disappointed all the same. I think the previous film is still the best, closely followed by numbers 3 and 4. Where this disappoints me is the direction and the script. Too many close shots, too much editing and cuts during the fighting scenes. It seems they spent most of the budget on the car chase in Rome and on the spectacular train scenes. The rest is meh, by the usual M:I standards. As for the script, I think there's too much verbal exposition and talking overall in the first half of the movie. Also, the captain and the crew of the Russian submarine speak in English among themselves? And with funny Russian accents?🤦Why couldn't it be in Russian?

Split.
16 June 2023
I'm on the fence about it. Split into two scores. One is very, very high: the music score and soundtrack. Amazing! 10 out of 10 for me. The other score is weak: the movie itself. I find the story , direction, animation and the voices very mediocre. For children mostly. The script is very predictable, yet confusing at the same time. The amazing music score kept my attention till the end, were it not for the music I suspect I'd be bored. I'm not a fan of comics in general and I'm not a child. Only 2 out of 10 for me. So, I add the score of 10 and the score of 2, and divide it in half. I give the movie 6 stars.

The weakest part of the trilogy.
12 May 2023
Very disappointing, for me. The weakest movie of the three Guardians Of the Galaxy movies, in my opinion. Too dark and unpleasant in parts, without emotional or intellectual payoff, and too weird in other parts, without charm or wit that characterized the previous two films. Too many explosions and too much shouting. Too loud in general. The only element of this movie that I really enjoyed was the soundtrack. Several good, classic songs. Also: the requirement of at least 600 characters is idiotic. The requirement of at least 600 characters is idiotic. The requirement of at least 600 characters is idiotic.

Trash
19 March 2023
Oh my god, what was that? It's sad that Nic Cage and Kelsey G star in a rubbish movie like this. It is like a very cheap film made for tv in the 1980s od 1990s, the script is nothing, the production value is nothing, everything is just very poor. If you can catch it for free on cable or streaming, or on the airplane, and you have an hour and a half to kill, then maybe, otherwise steer clear of this, it's a waste of everybody's time and effort. Also: the requirement of minimum 600 characters is ridiculous. Also: the requirement of minimum 600 characters is ridiculous. Also: the requirement of minimum 600 characters is ridiculous.

Surprisingly gripping and interesting.
9 March 2023
Excellent film. Surprisingly good, tight script and decent acting. Considering that this is a small budget film made for TV or streaming, I'm shocked how good this is. Dylan McDermott is hardly recognizable here and is cast against his usual type, which usually was a good, likeable hunk. A daring choice from him, I'd say. The two young actors also do a very good job. Mathilda Mathis, on the other hand, has very little to do here. At times the film makes for a rather uncomfortable and thought-provoking viewing, presenting an ordinary, boring and apparently very likeable and loving father and husband as a guy with a hidden, hideous and very cruel side of personality.

A very bad joke of a movie
1 March 2023
If it is supposed to be a joke it is a really bad one. Kevin Hart is taking a pi##. A boring, completely not funny, badly written pretense of a movie. Doesn't contain a single good scene or a single good joke, or a single good line of dialogue. Shame on Amazon Prime to purchase it. It lasts only 84 minutes and I think it's about 80 minutes too long. One more thing : the requirement to write at least 600 characters is ridiculous. The requirement to write at least 600 characters is ridiculous. The requirement to write at least 600 characters is ridiculous. The requirement to write at least 600 characters is ridiculous.

OK but for the joke of an ending...
9 February 2023
I quite enjoyed this and it maintained my interest throughout, but the "ending" is a bad joke. In fact, there's no ending. Something unexpected must have happened to force the production to stop after 8 episodes, I guess. Probably they had planned to have 9 or 10 episodes. But even so there's enough to recommend it, because it's pretty well written, acted and directed. I deduct 1 star for the nonexistent ending. The requirement of minimum 600 characters is absolutely ridiculous and stupid. The requirement of minimum 600 characters is absolutely ridiculous and stupid. Surprisingly smart and insightful. Rich Indians are full of it.
28 January 2023
I am pleasantly surprised how smart the script is. Calling this film a comedy is misleading and a mistake, but it's definitely worth a watch. It doesn't glamorize and idealize the Indian culture, it presents how rich, upper "class" is snobbish and conceited. The main character is an interesting, intelligent girl from the "upper class", whose personal life suddenly gets complicated because she falls for a poor Indian man. It's fascinating to see that the Indian diaspora keeps the old prejudices and flaws of the traditional Indian society despite living and being successful in modern America. Apparently you can get an Indian out of India but it's much more difficult to get India out of an Indian...

Awful.
12 December 2022
Rubbish. It's hard to imagine a superhero, big budget film with Brosnan and the Rock to be so boring... but they have achieved that! Awful script, predictable, clichéd, with a wooden dialogue and a wooden acting by Rock. He acts here as if he were a wooden plank indeed. Too much of special effects, some of them really lousy... Overbearing, constant music... It was really a challenge for me to not leave the screening earlier. Shame on Pierce Brosnan for participating in this, probably the worst and stupidest movie he has ever been in. And lastly: the Imdb requirement of at least 600 characters is IDIOTIC.

Meh.
3 December 2022
I have heard great things, I expected a very good, fun, thrilling movie. No, it's none of these things. It's not very good, because the direction is lacking and the script is poor. It's not very fun because there's not much of witty and funny dialogue in the script. And its not really thrilling. The fight scenes are mediocre, shot in close ups, often in the dark. Only the final fight, between the Santa and the Leguizamo character, got me excited. The tone of the movie is very uneven, it jumps between irreverent brutality mixed with gross cussing and the overly sweet, syrupy moments of family-friendly melodrama. It's like a weird mixture of a Tarantino movie and a Hallmark Christmas one. Apart from the Santa and the little girl all other characters are lazily written, even Leguizamo is a bit bland. The score is irritating, at least for me. So, the idea was excellent, but the execution pretty disappointing. 4/10 from me.

Pretty good, but...
13 November 2022
I've just watched episode 1 season 1. It was weird : the first ten minutes or so were like from another show. The car chase through the congested city center, the collapsing bus thing and the shoot out were over the top, unrealistic and just stupid. I thought "It looks dumb and pretty badly written". But then the show changes radically, it becomes much more realistic, well written, much better... So overall I like the 1st episode a lot, but those first minutes are like a warning that this show may be suffering from writers' schizophrenia. So in the end, maybe sometimes it will be a 5 out of 10 but other times a 8, 9 or even 10 out of 10? I'll gladly find out.

A lazy and weak remake.
27 September 2022
This is a loose remake of a French comedy with Dany Boon. That one was much funnier, with a better script. This one is lazy and treats viewers like morons, because it assumes that nice locations like Bali and two likeable, easy on the eye movie stars like Clooney and Roberts will guarantee success, no matter how bad and lazy the script is. It really looks like another comedy made quickly for Netflix. I don't recommend spending money on this, better wait for the streaming or TV... unless you are depressed, unhappy, down on your luck in your private life and quickly need some positive, optimistic and light entertainment. 3/10 for normal viewers, 8/10 if you're depressed and sad.

Rumba Therapy (2022)

Much, much better than expected.
29 August 2022
I really liked this movie. It's well written, directed and acted. It's about a bond between a father and a daughter, forgiveness, friendship and about dance. It's not corny or too sentimental, it's just OK. The young actress playing the daughter is a revelation: acts very well, can sing and dance, and is very charming. I don't usually like rumba, samba or tango, but the scenes here about dancing are so well written and directed I began to appreciate and enjoy it. Unlike in the movie "Let's dance" with JLo and Richard Gere, which also tells a story revolving around dancing classes, but is a much inferior movie. One small, tasty detail also worth mentioning is the minor role played by the famous writer Michel Houllebecq, as a cardiologist. He does it surprisingly well. Overall, I highly recommend this film.

Very good. Bittersweet.
24 August 2022
It's not really a comedy, though there's humor. It's more like a quirky drama about pregnancy, being a parent and finding out what you want in life. Acting is quite good, especially by the main actress, it's very well written and thought through, and the director also did a very good job. The story is deceptively simple but isn't really. It's a little film about serious topics but done with enough charm and wit to be quite entertaining. The ending is bittersweet.

Superb.
23 August 2022
This is a tremendous surprise. For me it's one of the most entertaining shows I've watched on streaming, be it Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBO Max. Excellent writing, acting and direction. The actress playing Kleo is very, very good. Plus good production quality - locations, costumes, cars... And it's not just a comedy thriller about a killer trained by the former GDR, it's an accusation of that dehumanising political system and how it ruined lives and corrupted characters. Highly recommended.

Boring and predictable.
21 August 2022
I have no idea why the books was a hit, the film's plot is allegedly very close to the book and I am not impressed. It's full of cliches and the story is predictable. The director doesn't do a very good job, lots of unnecessary close ups and mid-shots, despite the fact that the location, the swamps and the forest are important to the story, the director doesn't seem to know and appreciate that. The acting is mediocre also, including the main actress. The film has a Hallmark-like and TV feel to it, despite the sexual content. I recommend you watch it only if you can do it for free.

Awful.
21 August 2022
I've managed about 40 minutes of this rubbish and I left the cinema. I do it very rarely, but I've found this movie to be irritating, childishly stupid but not in a funny or charming way, and too loud. I'm amazed that anybody older than 12 years old could find it enjoyable. The only positive I found in this is the soundtrack, the selection of songs is quite nice - for this reason I've added one star.
