True Detective: Night Country: Part 4 (2024)
So it seems that "Put two chicks in it make it DEI" doesn't actually make good TV, and this is so bad that it is actually unbelievable
Week after week it gets worse. Exhibit 1: if you're going to use CGI, make sure it's not so bad that it destroys the illusion of reality. They could've used a scaled-up toy instead and have someone wearing it as a skin suit & waddle around and it would have been 1000% better. Exhibit 2: if you are going to dabble in horror, make sure it's actually scary, and not a ludicrously pathetic watered-down pale copy/paste job done elsewhere a million times before by people incomparably more talented.
Lad ackwokeledgments do not good television make. "Representation" obsession does not good television make. Even compared to seasons 2 and 3, this show is like that botched Spanish Jesus painting restoration job compared to Mona Lisa. So when you vote this November, make these atrocities stop. Get this people out of power. Make TV great again.
Your Honor: Part Thirteen (2023)
A stunningly good episode of a top tier series
The plot thickens as the Judge - who is forced to be an unwilling pawn in the Law Enforcement plan to take down the mob, and who just discovered that him being a Grandfather links him to one criminal clan - finds himself in a dangerous situation: his old friendship with the Mayor with whom he shares a secret that LEOs are using as leverage will be tested as his new familial obligations enter the picture. At the same time, two opposing criminal clans - whose heads both have issue with out-of-control and potentially dangerous underlings/slash/family members - are trying to diversify their money-making operations each in their own peculiar way, suffering setbacks. All this is set in atmospheric surroundings and the excellent acting & directing make it truly top notch. Of course there is no need to mention that Bryan Cranston is absolutely wonderful. 10/10.
The 1619 Project: Democracy (2023)
Another reminder about how deeply flawed 1619 project actually is.
1619 Project's first episode claims that the American Revolution was fought over slavery. Lord Dunmore becomes an "emancipator" in journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and historian Woody Holton's account. What they do not mention is that their supposed "hero", Dunmore, was an enslaver.
Both Nikole Hannah-Jones and Woody Holton assert explicit parallels between Dunmore and Abraham Lincoln's emancipation proclamation. This stretches the evidence beyond all recognition. Dunmore's measure saw very limited use & only freed slaves on the condition of military service. They also falsely inflate the clause about slavery into the entirety of Dunmore's order. In fact, it was a single line (which also covered white indentured servants). Other clauses imposed martial law, land confiscation, and called colonists into British military service.
Another misleading portrayal is the Hulu series' filming location. Hannah-Jones interviews Holton at the colonial governor's mansion in Williamsburg, strongly implying these events took place there. They didn't. Dunmore had fled to a British ship and issued the order from exile. In fact, Dunmore had been living aboard the William - a ship off of Norfolk - since he fled Williamsburg on June 8, 1775. Dunmore did not issue his proclamation until November 7th. In other words, he had already lost the colony and was "governing" from exile on a navy ship.
Holton points at the governor's mansion in Williamsburg, claiming that Dunmore issued his proclamation from this building as a sign of its significance. None of this is true. Dunmore fled months earlier & issued it from exile aboard a ship
This is fiction, and bad fiction at that. What I mentioned above is just a small sample of many errors contained in this episode. There is no historical truth to be learned in here. A very bad opening and a bad portent for future. Verdict: do not watch - except as a reminder how deeply flawed this 1619 project actually is.
2 stars for some nice visuals.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
A terrible betrayal of the source material, and an insult to fans everywhere
I'll start with the positives. The music is great, not as good as Howard Shore did on the original trilogy, but still holds up. The landscape shots were beautiful. Gil-galad and Durin were just believable as characters insde tolkien's world. The rest is just bad. The story doesn't have anything to do with anything that Tolkien wrote, apart from some familiar names. The first two episodes fail at delivering any sort of memorable scene. The pacing is off, almost nothing of real importance happens. The plot has its main character, their version of Galadriel, out on a quest that leads her nowhere during the first two hours of this so far. Then there's the dialogue. Poorly written, mediocre at best only thanks to a couple of talented actors. They try to embellish dialogue lines with big and profound sounding words, to say nothing of the sort. It tries to be clever way too hard, and fails its attempts at it. Natural conversation is nowhere to be found, instead we get a dull exchange of cliche lines we've heard and read in any school play. The romance between two of the characters seem to be written with every cliche imaginable, almost making it a parody of itself. But the show takes that seriously, and repeatedly uses tropes of the genre when no narrative resources were available to the writers. They couldn't get to write Galadriel as an intelligent character, so everyone else around her is dumbed down. The writers lack so much talent, that the only way they have to achieve this is by Galadriel's intuition, wich must be pretty strong since she conveys exposition about events way in the past with great detail as dialogue with other characters. Just lazy. The acting is also lacking. None seem to be able portray their characters emotions without looking like a caricature of themselves.
At the end of this, even if you forget that this show has anything to with Tolkien's legendary, the show itself doesn't hold up at all. Sure some visuals are beautiful, but the writers lack any talent required to manage this task on their hands. And it shows. Trash tv at its best.
The Rehearsal: Gold Digger (2022)
This is just incredible
This is artifice and reality, comedy and tragedy, birth and death, connection and loss, art and life all touched upon so masterfully that we're left with an illusion that we've been given several complete life stories with an astonishing level of detail, and all of that in under 28 minutes . Sebajmathews said it perfectly in a previous review go read that this is mainly to add another 10/10 to the average.
Tehran (2020)
So so SO good! We need Season 3 ASAP
This is a show that has it all: a captivating story, a superb lead actress, and an amazing "bad guy" although there really are no bad guys and girls here, it's all people doing their best to defend their own nations and their own visions of how the world should work: it's a clash of ideologies and the carnage left in its wake set to a pounding, memorable soundtrack (how about that main theme!) Also Glenn Close in Season 2! What more you need? I need more seasons so the creative minds behind this can continue their great work, so, do the right thing Apple TV!
Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000)
They ruined it completely with the last episode
The only at least somewhat funny moment was when he stepped in vindman, but it was humor-free otherwise - a truly shockingly bad send-off to a once-great show, sad!
Santa Inc. (2021)
I watched all 8 episodes and the best description of it all is "sad"
Animation is really good, voices are done OK and there was a promise of a potentially great show in the basic storyline, but it was completely smothered by heavy-handed and inorganic insertion of all the usual woke topics fashioned in the most malicious way imaginable, and some actually sociopathic moments which left me mouth agape. As for comedy value, I chuckled maybe once or twice during the entire run.
I suggest everyone even the haters to suffer through it all because it is actually a true marvel and a perfect encapsulation of the current mental state of the left-liberal element in America.
