First Date (2021)
You won't regret giving this film your time!
I really loved First Date. It was fun, different and had a lot of quick unexpected turns. All things I love to see in an indie film. It got the comedy right and keeps you guessing "what's going to happen next?" Some great acting performances too. The director(s) really set the tone and the cast of quirky characters all find there place to shine in this well executed dark comedy.
I saw this at the at the Jim Thorpe Independent Film Festival which typically slates a lot of great selections and First Date really stood out as exceptional.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Not for your average Marvel fan
After watching WW1984 a second time I found I enjoyed it much more. What was the difference? I watched it on HBOMAX in my living room on my 70inch TV. No, that didn't change. The second time I watched it with my 9 y/o daughter. I got to see what parts resonated with her. She laughed or smiled at cute nods the movie provided. She lit up at seeing a powerful woman in an iconic role. I don't think WW84 was meant for the same kind of guy who grew up reading Ironman and Avengers and The Flash comics. It was specifically meant for kids and it is meant for the women of tomorrow. Despite the short sightedness many fans of the genre' may have for this movie, it does more than simply exist. I hope it endures and I hope it finds its audience. Tomorrow is going to need those heroes.
The Arrangement (2020)
Cool (and different) indie film
The Arrangement does what indie films seldom ever do. It's Bigger than the sum of its parts and it executes (not just its victims). Great cast of local Philly actors and a role that is perfectly suited for Eric Roberts. A fresh story that takes a few left turns just when you think there's a right coming up. Definitely not something we've all seen before. Fantastic cinematography. Tie this all together with solid direction and you get The Arrangement. A very solid piece of filmmaking that breaks down genre's.
Stargirl: Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part One (2020)
Great Episode
Best episode of the season. Glad they're back with a punch after the previous episode kind of dragged down a bit. This show is on top form.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: From the Ashes (2019)
In a season of
In a season that is foreseeably weaker than say 3, 4 or 5; this episode is particularly slow.
Stargirl: Shining Knight (2020)
Easily the worst episode so far.
Bad writing, mediocre acting and weak direction make this the slowest and most boring episode so far. While most episodes of SG are a worthy 8ish, this one hovers at a lowly 4.5 for me. I Hope they get back to their normal above par performances.
Star Trek: Discovery: Such Sweet Sorrow (2019)
Yikes!
Enough sap to fill the largest Maple tree in all of Canada. The writing is atrocious on this episode. The actors handle it extremely well. They should get hazard duty pay for working under these conditions.
Somewhere (2010)
If you Hated Lost in Translation as much as me....
Then you'll probably like this movie just a tiny bit more. The performances are fine. I only watched this film because of Stephen Dorf (he's almost always interesting- and always a fine actor). Everyone turns in a fine performance, but the fact is there's just no actual story here. And if your looking for a payoff at the end of the film then your out of luck as well. I would go on about the overtly long expositional shots that don't drive the story, BUT there's really no story to speak of.
Jessica Jones: A.K.A. Hero Pants (2019)
This whole season feels
Every episode this season feels like DEXTER. The serial killer story line and the continuing inner monologue - not bad; just a bit redundant.
