Velocity Girl (2023)
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie!
As an older male, I wasn't expecting to enjoy a coming of age movie about a young girl - so I was surprised when I enjoyed it as much as I did. This movie is really good. The acting was excellent, the plot simple but with enough variation to keep you interested. The pacing was very good and the cinematography also excellent. For me, what puts this movie over the top for enjoyment is how believable the characters are. I highly recommend this movie. Also, the supporting actors were all good. The location is in or around San Antonio, Texas. For animal lovers, there is a turtle and a cow. I also understand the lead girl wrote and sang two songs at the end of the movie and both were very nice. Surprisingly good! This director, Scott Leisk, has a number of other movies that you also may enjoy.
Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. (2022)
What causes people to adopt the "Lee-Curtis" mindset?
After watching this movie, I was left with a question about people who end up with the Lee-Curtis mindset. He was obsessed with an image of being successful as having lots of adoring parishioners at his church. He was willing to berate and treat his wife unfairly to obtain his goal. His speech appeared to constantly be in "on" mode, creating a picture of himself and his church that wasn't reflected in reality. He also seemed to believe that a public display of monetary wealth would confirm his success to himself and the church. He was capable of focusing entirely on his desired image of himself and willing to abandon all else.
What causes people to adopt the "Lee-Curtis" mindset?
I doubt he was like this his entire life, especially his younger years. Was it that first "taste of success" that triggered some uncontrollable inner need for more. Why is it that some people, and I'm not only speaking of those in religious settings, are drawn into this obsession? From what little I know, I understand that Steve Jobs of Apple was also similarly obsessed. Jack Welch of General Electric also comes to mind.
If I invented a widget that sold millions and I became successful, would I become obsessed with my company. Would I do anything and everything to keep it going, including stepping on others or falsely representing the company's position (Enron comes to mind). Are we all Lee-Curtis, just waiting for that trigger?
What would cause you to adopt the "Lee-Curtis" mindset?
Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (2021)
What a hot mess!
Lots of big name stars. A plot that is just impossible to wrap your mind around. Completely unbelievable action and fight sequences. After seeing this film, I still have no idea of the best way to explain it. If you're a fan of the (many) stars, it might be worth a watch.
Bombshell (2019)
A character study about the abuse of power
First of all, I'm an old white guy who spent my life in low-level office computer jobs. In my experience, women and men were treated equally. A programmer is a programmer. So my comments are just about the movie.
I really enjoyed Bombshell. To me, it's a character study about people handling situations where others have influence over them, either though a job or whatever. Other than working at FOX, the three ladies don't really have a significant relationship with each other, but they all have the same issue. I thought the journey of the three ladies was well done and was presented as more than just a "he's a bad guy". Each lady had their own background story, goals, and approach to life, and shared the oppressive situation of working with Mr. Ailes.
I did find the movie a bit difficult to follow in the beginning, but it all worked out.
Lastly, my wife and I rented the DVD from Netflix so we were able to watch the many Special Features, which I would highly recommend.
Summary - while it's difficult for me to relate to having someone demand sexual favors for job opportunities, the concept of others having (and exercising) power over me is something I can relate to. How far can an individual be pushed before they reach their "I can't take it anymore" point? What are the consequences of pushing back? Have you ever experienced the "I know it's wrong, but it's easier to just go along with it, rather than create a bunch of trouble"? That's the message I got from watching this movie.
Little Man (2006)
It's stupid, but it's fun
If you like movies like Naked Gun, etc., then you might like Little Man. It is definitely silly and has a type of "Home Alone" kind of vibe, but I found it a hoot to watch and marveled at the special effects work that was able to put the guy's face on the "baby's" body. Granted it's stupid, but I thought it was fun. Just simple entertainment. Give it a look.
Cold Blood Legacy (2019)
Needed these 2 things
My wife and I watched this via Netflix DVD. It would have greatly benefited from the following 2 items:
1) subtitles - many of the actors had accents, and the background music was loud
2) A "StarWars" type crawler at the beginning to introduce the plot and major players. After watching the entire move, my wife and I were unable to explain the plot.
The Poison Rose (2019)
Easy watching private detective stuff
This is the kind of movie you throw in the DVD and just watch for the fun of it. Good casting and a VERY straight-forward plot. Sort of in the style of the Sam Spade movies. It's simple entertainment.
