Colin in Black and White (2021)
It's about "Black & White"
So as the title says it, the show talks about racism. I really feel for all those 1 star rating people who thought it was a Chaplin hommage TV show and were upset it was talking about racism instead.
Note I can only rate the show as I don't know anything about literally everything this show talks about. I am not American. I don't follow the NFL. I don't know who Colin is.
Apparently he is some rich and successful dude. Doesn't make him pain-proof or doesn't make his story less interesting. I am not sure why people seem to think it should? His autobiographical TV show is entertaining. A bit obnoxious. Sometimes a biiit whiny. But I didn't find it that much cleaving as people say. It depicts both white and black people navigating and dealing with racism to the best of their abilities. Also a lot of situations aren't just "black and white" and there's often two sides of the coin to the stories Colin is telling.
The characters are relatable, sometimes the same who were cringy in the scene before are incredibly cute in the next scene.
Of course it's only one perspective at Colin's situation, and it's impossible to say how accurate it is, but it's his life and that's how he wants to tell it, it's somewhat relatable sometimes and more often than not funny and entertaining. Worth a watch.
I Know What You Did Last Summer: Hot Shrimp Salad (2021)
Out of screen action
Most of the good action happened out of the screen in this episode.
Random people ending dead for no reason doesn't make that show more interesting. Regardless of how much fake blood they use to make those deaths.
Most interesting story arc since the beginning of the show is teased in this episode, but it's too little too late and given how they handle the intrigues so far, I am not ready to stick around for one more episode of terrible writing, awful characters, no humor, no action, no real drama show. If I wanted to see that kind of TV, I'd watch reality TV.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (2021)
The scariest thing is that someone made a show this bad
It's new, it's fresh, yet it fails on most of what could be expected of a TV show like this or what's expected from any TV show at all
The horror
Where is it ? Really ? I saw more horrifying things while watching Dr House. A few bodies here and there aren't going to scare us. And the jumpscares? Well, they give so much clue there's going to be a jumpscare (music, acting...) way ahead it happens that's it's not surprising or scary anymore.
Also most kills happen of screen and don't even make any sense and mostly involve random characters we barely knew anything about.
The comedy
Nothing. Nothing to say. There's none. Zero. Plain nada. This ain't even funny
The drama
Well, let's sum it up, it's sex. It's all about sex. People, especially teenagers, don't kiss, don't date in this show. They just have really explicit and twisted sex. Maybe the sex scenes were what was supposed to be horrifying ? Idk... Still falls flat
The fresh new take
How fresh is a fresh new take when the writers can't write diverse characters without falling into every single trope ever? Even killing the characters from the minority first, they did it.
Writing
Terrible. Everything is so flat out. The first episode really layed how stupid they think the viewers are. There was a twist in a 10 min sequence that was anyway going to be addressed later. But nope, just to make sure, they spent the rest of the episode detailing the twist over and over to make sure you got it the first time... I'm not sure I've ever seen even an anime with that many useless flashbacks
If you like Riverdale and thought it had decent enough levels of horror and writing but lacked sex and you liked the stupidity and craziness of the Blossom characters, that show is for you, although it is way more pretentious.
If you're looking for a good horror show, a well written show, a fresh TV show... Or generally something even barely entertaining to watch just pass. There are other better things to watch out there.
(Yup, I watched the 4 episodes before writing this critique, so it doesn't get better later. I took the bullet for you, please be safe and skip that awful, bad bad bad show. I will)
