Isekai Mao to Shokan Shojo no Dorei Majutsu (2018)
Might be worth a 2nd season
When compared to other isekai like Log Horizon, Sword Art online or Overlord, it's more similar to Overlord.
A hardcore solo player wakes in the body of his completely overpowered character in a fantasy/mmorpg world. More or less following the Overlord formula, he now has to find out how the world works and ends up helping people along the way.
Although it has its awkward and funny moments one might get tired of them. Also this is falls under the "ecchi" genre, so be prepared to busty girls, panties and innuendo
Hammer of the Gods (2013)
Disappointing to say the least
Let's start by the title, the only way the gods subject is addressed in this movie is by the lack of faith of one character opposed to the faith of his allies and foes. In no way do the gods intervene. The "hammer" is just a reference to a person.
Credits. Whenever a movie stops in the beginning just so we can all be informed of who is who... with their names appearing beside the characters, that movie better be something really special or else I get that funny feeling and just going to be wasting my time.
The violence is fine, people tend to have brutal gory deaths when they are attacked with Viking swords and axes. Even the boromir-like-death gets a free pass. By the end of the movie there is some gratuitous boobs because whynot, not that I'm complaining but they bounce out of nowhere...get it...bounce...
The acting is half good and I'm still wondering why would an actor reprise the same role in two unrelated pieces (tv show Vikings and Hammer of the Gods).
On to the plot. This is what really destroys the movie. It goes no where, really. People die left and right for hardly any reason. The fellowship (let's call it fellowship) get's obliterated as soon as a seasoned Viking warrior acts like a child.
Then half the movie has gone by and our group of merry m...erh... Vikings find this guy who is known to be practically invincible but has a trait that has to be included because you know, equality in representation and whatnot. Anyway all is good but turns out the only true thing about him are the rumors about is tendencies. Some people are fighting our heroes because whynot apparently. Then the Hammer of the gods gets his screen time. He is weird. And the group is cut in half because I guess the budget was running low or something. Someone who is implied to have been dead or missing for years is around but has a taboo fetish and she is very annoying. Was she like a priestess? And oracle? A consort queen? Who cares, she isn't around for 30 seconds screen time.
Everyone has a nice meal and get back to the starting point. But this time they have less experienced men (since they died for nothing), a former slave woman in front of the ranks (because she can read, that is her only strong point). All this in a week maybe 2 weeks time period. They all went no where slow...and it's all on the main character who didn't listen to virtually every single person close to him (father, best friend, his own men) since the first minute of their troubled times.
The landscape is gorgeous and very well captured most of the times...that's probably the best thing I can say about this.
4/10...within the viking genre alone...maybe 6/10 being generous
Suicide Squad (2016)
If you are psyched for it.....STOP, half of it doesn't live up to the hype
You have to be careful if you are making a comic book live action movie, specially if it's a "team movie". I was really looking forward to this, Will Smith looked like he could carry the cast and the trailers really made their job. Unfortunately the movie is weak...sometimes it looks like it's a "look what I can do kind of documentary" Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was good and funny enough to be a great Harley Quinn....
Why am I addressing Deadshot and Harley? well because this was their show really, all other members are just here to support them. sadly (or not) Killer Croc, Katana, Cpt Boomerang, Flag and El Diablo are not the focus of the movie, the viewer is not led to care for them at all even with Diablo's "special sharing moment"
the first half drags itself around trying to introduce the characters but it lacks interest (apart from Harley and Mr J) even with some DC heroes making cameos. after the intros are made it goes on smoothly until the last part which was a let down for me.
by the way, Jared Letos's Joker still comes out short when compared to the previous 2 jokers we had... he is hardly intimidating and quite sad to look at... he shouldn't have as much screen time as he does (which is not much but still) Some of the supportive characters were surprisingly more interesting than some members of the Suicide Squad and the Villain of the movie is quite frankly boring and very very predictable.
as a "super hero" movie it OK at best, if it's on TV some time from now I will watch it but I probably won't make an effort to look for it actively. It certainly is better than Batman V Superman but that's not putting the bar very high is it? a solid 6 by comic movie standards.
Django Unchained (2012)
it's Tarantino, you know what to expect
So, it's a Tarantino movie, we know we will get over the top violence, we know we will get abusive language and we know it's supposed to chock. The movie itself is good.
Jamie starts out a very believable slave and sells his character very well.
Naturaly or maybe not, it depends on your taste, Sam "Jules" Jackson and Christoph Waltz steal the show.
It's a shame Kerry Washington's character didn't get to be better developed, but then again who had the time, right?
The music is expertly used throughout the movie and the "Trinity" wink at the end is a wonderful addition.
On to what really got people fired up: the word most people from the US are afraid to use and refer to as the N word.
Yes, it gets used a lot, and I mean a lot. Yes, the overall language might be offensive for some people but no, this particular part of the movie is not over the top.
It's about slavery, it's about racist views of most characters including black characters. So the N word is well used, it's not exaggerated it's very appropriate having in mind the time and place where the actions happens.
Yes, slave owners, as well as regular folk would call black people the N word, it was as natural as saying the sky is blue and that slave is a N
The violence doesn't spoil the picture at all although it is very exaggerated.
And there is no reason to find this a racist movie, nor it depicts all white men as "the villain".
