Titanic (1997)
There probably are longer films, but....
Pre-iceburg this film is one of the most boring of all time, with a cheesy romantic plot. After the iceburg it gets more interesting but is still pretty dreadful. I particularly hated the awful song (you know which one I mean). It is also inexcusable that American script writers took one of the actual crew of the Titanic and turned him into a murderer. Why couldn't they have made up another character if they had to have a gun-wielding officer.
The Patriot (2000)
Another in the line of American self-love films
Its all very well Americans saying that this film is not meant to be historically accurate, but there are people who are stupid enough to believe that this is a depiction of real events (see some of the comments on this page).
The scene with the church building was awful and also the happy slave motif was extremely offensive. This is yet another film where America tries to show itself as a country that never does anything wrong and is always the best country at everything, see U-572, Independence Day etc.
Soon we'll get a film that tries to say that nobody died in WWII other than Americans, or that any or all of Jesus, Shakespeare, Newton, Gallileo, God, were in fact American.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
I almost fell asleep.
This is an awful film. Not only is it poor in itself but it spoils the
original 3 films as well by reminding everybody of the flaws in them
that we had all forgotten about. Jar-Jar Binks has got to be the
worst character in a film ever, and as for that boring Pod-racer
scene it is well, boring. This film makes me wish even more for
the Lord of the Rings film, as Star Wars is a rip off of LotR in a lot
of ways anyway.
Galaxy Quest (1999)
Excellent spoof sci-fi
As a Trekkie I was a bit apprehensive before I watched this film, but I thought it was great. This was a really funny, but quite gentle satire. I particularly liked Alan Rickman's character, who obviously is partly based on Patrick Stewart and though there are quite a lot of in jokes, there is enough general humour to keep non trekkies happy as well.
Jane Eyre (1983)
The best so far, but...
This is, in my opinion, much better than either of the 2 1990's versions, but is still not all that good. It feels dated, probably because it is, but it does stand up well compared to other BBC 1980's period pieces such as Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey.
The length of this adaptation allows for a much better adaptation of the book than either of the 2 90's versions, and St John Rivers is at least covered, although not very well. Timothy Dalton is very good as Rochester, but the actress playing Jane is much too old. There is definitely scope for a TV adaptation of this length that has more than a tenner spent on it.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Nearly a great film
This is very good in a lot of ways, and it is good to see a Hollywood film that tries to be different. Unfortunately, what had been a brilliant film is marred by one of the worst endings in recent years. Why couldn't they have ended it about 15 minutes earlier, where there was a perfectly good ending?
