Dear White People (2017)
Terrible show
Awful show & not at all representative of black American people. Many have claimed it to be woke, it is not. It's regressive, pretentious & offensive. None of these qualities are woke.
WWII in Color: Road to Victory (2021)
A disservice to those who fought & died
Interesting but not historically accurate. At times contradicting itself there is an element of vulture entertainment above historical retelling. Focusing on glorifying American involvement it ignores huge amount of toil and sacrifice taken on by the many other nations & nationalities that made up the allied war effort.
To report as fact blatantly obvious falsehoods is disgraceful and an affront to those brave soldiers who sacrificed everything for the greater good.
There is no reason why a factual retelling wouldn't be equally interesting so it seems as if the lazy, inaccurate, pseudo journalism employed here points towards the program makers having no respect for the dead & scared participants of ww2.
Essentially, it's cheap, tacky, fake journalism.
Hey Tracey! (2019)
TV for imbeciles....
There is nothing good about this show. It's certainly a low point in the career of everyone involved, it's a low point in the history of television. Somehow it got commissioned, how, God only knows. It's comedy for the type of person who thinks Impractical Jokers is a masterpiece, it's the Ja Ja Binks of television shows. It's offensive and about as funny as a toothache.
Stacey Dooley Investigates (2009)
Nice person, but totally unqualified
Stacey Dooley doesn't have the intelligence or ability to function as an investigative journalist. She's beautiful and somewhat likable but lacks the intellect to apply critical thinking or empathise with people that aren't her. It's a terrible shame that talented journalists have been ignored only as Stacy books multiple jobs that she isn't qualified to do.
They Live (1988)
Excellent, underrated B style movie
This movie was well ahead of its time, the budget was low, the script can appear quite dated and the action may look a bit daft at times. It's worth remembering it's well over thirty years old. The themes of the movie are solid, examining the nature of capitalism and control in the modern world. One could even describe it as prophetic as the gap between the hyper rich and the rest of the world grows larger as more and more working people fall into poverty. Certainly one of John Carpenter's gems, the casting of Roddy Piper was a master stroke, ensuring the movie reached a far wider audience. Plus Piper was a legend. Anyone who fails to see how the themes in this movie mirror todays reality really needs to wear glasses.
If Charles Dickens was alive today, he'd be writing stuff like this.
Positive Energy with Michele Granberg (2015)
Dumbed down science for air heads,
There are a great many failings of this show so it's better to start with the positives. The subject matter is important and has potential to educate young minds and perhaps inspire younger generations to investigate and educate themselves, the ambition to make the series carbon neutral is also an excellent undertaking.
However, the science is dumbed down beyond all reason. The amount of shots of the host smugly smiling like a narcissistic Cheshire Cat as she interviews people from her phone, many of which are on a beach for some reason are incredibly irritating. I guess this might be aimed at the American market where smug, blonde white women make good hosts because appearance is ranked supremely above intellect and actual charisma.
It is possible to create solid, accessable, educational media content without entirely dumbing down science and language. Science doesn't have to be boring, it can be entertaining, admittedly striking a balance is not always easy. This series, doesn't even try. It's as if the host employed the most sycophantic team of writers in the universe to enhance her enormous ego and the side effect was a little bit of scientific knowledge passed on to anyone who can tolerate her for the duration of each episode.
I'd love to extoll the virtues of this series but it's pretty much impossible to get passed it's many failings. The only reason for rating it four stars is due to the snippets of scientific information and the laudable aim of making it carbon neutral which is tremendous. But my word, this, is, garbage.
Abandoned Engineering (2016)
Imperfect but still interesting
A fascinating show with one huge flaw. They don't bother to fact check, often reporting historical inaccuracies which is unacceptable. One example, they claimed that as soon as WW2 ended and Germany was divided up that the Soviet Union started fortifying the border. This is untrue. It wasn't until after people started to flee across the boarder in higher numbers that the Soviets initially made a border with barbed wire and eventually the Berlin Wall. It's a real shame that such a fantastically interesting show isn't a trustworthy source of information. I love the show, it's great but there is no excuse for reporting false history, furthermore some of their "experts" are very right wing on some issues. Academics and experts are generally rather good at impartiality when offering commentary and analysis. It's hard to tell if the factual inaccuracies are down to laziness, lack of budget or some sort of bizarre agenda. I'm guessing it's a budgetary issue, whatever the reason, it detracts from the credible experts and fascinating subject matter.
