Goodfellas (1990)
I love Scorsese, but hated 'Goodfellas'.
I was first introduced to Scorsese's work with 'Taxi Driver', and was immediately compelled to rush out and rent 'Mean Streets' and then Scorsese's first, 'Who's that Knockin'?' Although these films were both uneven in places, I still saw the same brilliance. So of course I had to rent 'Goodfellas', right? It is in everyone's top 100. And I was monumentally disappointed. There was no struggle with moral issues. These guys were just violent jerks for whom I had no sympathy. I *wanted* them to get caught so someone would get them off of the street (and off of my TV screen). Ray Liotta is such a pretty boy that he could never match DeNiro or Keitel in my book. And the violence in this movie was just sickening and unnecessary. Sorry, folks, disagree with me all you want, but I'm sorry I ever decided to watch 'Goodfellas' and I haven't felt compelled to pick up a Scorsese flick since.
Spy Game (2001)
A fine night's entertainment.
'Spy Game' is a fine night's entertainment, especially on the big screen. Although I did not find Brad Pitt's performance particularly distinctive, Redford was in top form. This film will keep you engaged throughout, allowing you to forget whatever is going on in your real life for a couple of riveting hours. However, as much as my friend & I liked the movie, we did find most of our post-viewing discussion consisted of picking out far-fetched and ill-conceived plot devices. The beauty of this film is that it is fast-paced and engaging enough that you don't notice these problems while you're watching it, only upon further reflection after leaving the theater. If you like Robert Redford, Brad Pitt, or the spy thriller genre in general, you won't be disappointed by this movie. However, if you're looking for a 'serious', thoughtful movie, look elsewhere.
Velvet Goldmine (1998)
What a disappointment...
As a fan of the lushly melodramatic, androgynous, and hedonistic style exemplified by artists like David Bowie and Queen's Freddie Mercury, I was immediately drawn to this movie. However, I was very disappointed to find that this was a film which rested on its laurels. Having already affiliated itself with the "glam rock" scene of the late '70's, it used no imagination in developing the characters or storyline, instead limping along rather predictably through the career of the supposed Brian Slade. Part of my problem was that, next to Ewan McGregor, I found Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, the male lead, to be decidedly uncompelling and not particularly sexy, despite all of the pouting and costume changes. Definitely worth seeing for McGregor's charged portrayal of Curt Wild, the one saving grace of the film.
Careful (1992)
A feverish dream...
I thought this movie was near perfect, although certainly it will not appeal to a mainstream audience. Guy Maddin has created an atmosphere that evokes both the glowingly wholesome and the grotesque at once. The use of sound, the characters, and the pacing combine to give this film a uniquely mesmerizing feel. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the absurd and unconventional. This said, far from being esoteric or overly symbolic, I found this film extremely accessible and easy to watch, and was quickly drawn into the dark and offbeat storyline.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
Truly a fabulous movie!
An amazing film, innovative and the very definition of satire. Peter Sellers is in top form, and George C. Scott puts in a fabulous performance. If you are a fan of director Kubrick, this is a must see. Even after nearly forty years, this film remains relevant to modern day problems of nuclear technology and international affairs. At the same time, it is full of wry humor & produced many belly laughs while viewing!
