The Newsroom (2012)
Riveting interesting and always relevant
It opens in a way that shocks you and it closes in a way that leaves you inspired.
It is amazing to me how relevant this show is. It is captivating. Riveting. I usually can't stand shows that involve so much of the characters personal life and but Newsroom manages to keep the pace up so there is no dull moment and make it also relevant to the story.
Tackle new media, technology and the changing social currents and manage to make you come out thinking there is still hope!
Telling such a compelling story I binge-watched it by seasons...
Having a strong emotionally moving moment almost every episode.
Watching this in 2018 for the first time it feels so relevant!
WOW This is The Shawshank redemption of the TV series
Great talented writing. Loved the performances. Very believable and immersing.
Bad Ass 2: Bad Asses (2014)
this could be good stuff for 5th to 7th graders
unfortunately, the makers went for R with too much nudity, vulgar language and gobs of violence the kinds of b/c movie fights, with the old Karate/ Kongfu stuff showing on screens that the bad guys are watching. sorry. that's crass. So, if you liked the first one, you'll probably like this one. If you stumbled on this one by mistake, know you're in for some real bad car chase shots that look totally fake to a 12 year old and a thin story that leaves much deserved. Sorry to rain on your parade. While I am sure both Dannys had fun with the others making this movie, I had very little fun sitting through. Suspension of disbelief level required : 9/10. Beyond me.
The Help (2011)
inspiration 9 - entertainment 7 Great movie
Wow! I thought this was just another family or personal race based drama the likest of George Wallace. Boy was I in for a surprise. This film grips you all the way from the start with great acting by brilliantly cast actresses that are sure to surprise you with their performance. A blend of down-to-earth super realistic scenes and funny to hilarious ones, daily and social situational and emotionally engaging, strike that, moving! moments that are as good as they are motivational and inspirational. This is no chic flick, This is a well rounded drama that will restore your faith in the good in people and make you want to be a better human being-to your fellow man.
Big Fish (2003)
inspiration 9 - entertainment 7 Great dads movie
Tuck your cynicism. Put it all away. This is a good family film about the legend of life itself. The story of the image of the world created by a child-turned father, as seen by his son, who heard the stories. Problem is, like most of us today, the son grew up into a world different from the father's. Different values, ways, habits and stories. And like most children, the world of the parents loses credibility, meaning and value, when the child learns cynicism, separates true from false, and in general, makes his own choices in life. Choices of belief. This film is a beautiful fantasy that bridges the reality barriers between the generations and brings the son back to his father's world, and more important, the father, back to his son's. This movie makes me think of the ways I father my children and makes me want to become better in the ways I put meaning into the process. Not my beliefs. My children will choose their own. Not my way in life. They will have theirs. The immense importance that they, and the role I have in their lives, means to me. That is, in my opinion, what this movie tries to pass on to us.
Life as a House (2001)
contemporary inspiration
A good movie about marriage, broken families, what life promises and what we fail to deliver. It is also about finding love again, finding a path to the heart of someone dear, and finding a way to overcome your own weaknesses, and that we should never think that it is too late, because a moment of meaning is worth every effort. This movie hosts one of the best lines in all the inspirational movies I have ever seen: "I can tell you I love you as many times as you can stand to hear it and all that does, the only thing, is remind us, that love is not enough, not even close". This would be on all the lists of inspirational movies if it were not so real-life, down the nitty-gritty, filth, mistakes, infidelities and addictions of the characters. That rich and balanced mix is also what makes it so believable and so touching, moving and captivating. It is a tear-jerker and a good one at that, as such family-related dramas should be. I do not know if I will go back and watch this again once or twice a year like I do Shawshank Redemption or other inspirational movies. But it is definitely a keeper, to revisit, for some excellent scenes, good acting and beautiful scenery.
Cleanskin (2012)
Good thought provoking surprise from the kingdom
I was surprised and enjoyed this film very much.
After viewing "Incendiary" and "The Four Lions" I expected another mediocre film from the British empire. But the plot and the delivery of this film ascends to the heights of "Unthinkable" in dealing with what the officials call "clean-skins" to wash their hands of responsibility to the lack of intelligence, as well as what goes on unsanctioned.
The plot streams nicely, the action is fast, very well performed and believable and the actors give a performance that is above what you expect from their's and this films' grade.
The movie actually had me frozen in suspense a couple of times. Although the twist in the end is quite predictable to some, the movie goes as far as possible on this plot-line and leaves a lot of discussion topics for the viewer.
Albeit the main characters past and sometime present has some holes, the filmmakers have made the right choices here, to make a good streaming thriller that deals with what is happening when people make the choices and carry consequences, rather than delve into exactly how and what happened that lead to that decision. They left some details for the viewer to fill-out and in my opinion the story was written perfectly.
Some of the finer gory effects are second class and some are very realistic. That is balanced by little marks and behaviors of the characters that carry ample references and symbolism. So, all in all, it's a very good and quite a disturbing thriller as this topic should be.
Courageous (2011)
inspirational drama but very religious
I did see Fireproof. I did watch this movie to the end although at times it was a bit too much.
First the good: This movie is much better than Fireproof. The acting is decent, TV show level. If you are religious, this is a great movie. It reaffirms all that you believe in and inspires you. The plot is decent. It makes it easy to fill in the holes and is pretty predictable in a good way.
Now, the not so good: This is a heavy drama, heavily specked with religious teachings and not on par with a Hollywood drama. If you are not religious, there is too much of that pious stuff to the point of disbelief. The movie does not carry and the plot is not believable. The movie and the acting is on soap level. Only with one installment. It does have Faith Family and Fatherhood all in one as another reviewer wrote. However, that does not mean that every father or would be father will take anything from it. As a father, I was reminded of things in my life and inspired to reconnect with goals and aspirations I had in the past and were worn by everyday life. But we all seek meaning in our life and listen and believe what we already believe. Very few change their faith or heart and that usually happens when one belief system breaks down and a person needs to find another system. Those who are not religious will probably not last through the movie. Good effort. I think IMDb needs another Genre to the list. Either Inspirational or Religious. I think the first will serve better for both.
The Bill Collector (2010)
I was so disappointed I decided to make something positive of it
This movie should be categorized under a new category(together with some others): Religious. It is not even so inspirational as others try to be (e.g Fireproof/2008). The story line is not believable and full of holes. The continuity is lacking. The acting is horrendous. I have seen first year acting school students do better. Even Trejos appearance is not managing to elevate this movie to the appropriate C level. This will never be a B movie. The best moments of the movie are in the last minutes when AFTER all is said and done, they take the plot turn in such exaggeration and let the actors be as corny as possible. Some of them might have justified the money they were paid for this gig trying to resemble a wannabe live stage company production. I was so disappointed so quickly, that while the movie was still running, I logged on and started reading the reviews. I realized whose review it was that made me consider watching this movie. I did watch it to the end! it was painful. But one good thing came out of it. I discovered IMDb's ignore list. You have to go into the review, click on the person's name and then click again to see their profile. Then you can put them on your ignore list and never see any more reviews from them ever!
Date Night (2010)
Best movie for married couples in a long long time
Do you ever find yourself letting your spouse choose the movie (men want action, women want a romance or drama...)? Well stop right here. I'm gonna risk sounding like a cheap salesman but this one is the answer! With the aid of real good comedy, this director brings it (and you) home! This is no action film but fellas, you will not notice. It is nor a real drama but ladies, you will love it more. Because there is a perfect mix of real-life-like drama that everyone will identify with and find themselves in and there is just a little action that is mild but so close to real life that makes it easy to suspend your disbelief. And it is all coated, almost sugar-coated but not too much, with great comedy performed by good actors that I will not even try to analyze. Just trust me on this one, if you are married, you will enjoy this movie. Not only that, you will remember it fondly and take something with you. Some will take the funny lines. You will be cracking up, especially if you live in America. Some, definitely if you are a married woman, will take the heartfelt moments. Great work on all accounts. Kudos to the people who made this film.
The Ugly Truth (2009)
Great romantic comedy for all sexes... Great entertainment
This one had me laughing to tears. No dull second! The lines are sharp, funny to cracking and although sometimes low, hey, it is a romantic comedy. Don't expect witty literary stuff. The comic angle is everywhere, from the anal retentive archetype Abby(Catherine Heigl) to the uneducated street smart Mike(Gerard Butler) who does not get the reference to public figures. So, they do say some words like sex, erection, and even the part where Abby says the word cock is funny. Heigl does a good job playing a "When Harry Met Sally" - Meg Ryan scene both ways, one where she's for real and another where she fakes it. And they're both funny! This is not a chick flick. The laughs were very loud watching this among guys. It might be a bit awkward with a date because this movie stabs at many more romance fallacies than all the other RomComs I've seen. But in my opinion, if you are on a date, it might actually serve to separate the sport from the prune and her reactions will give you some pointers on how to continue. I might even come back to write again and tell you how it is with the wife.... When Harry Met Sally, Bridget Jones's Diary and Two Weeks Notice, are all nice Romantic Comedies and the top rated. This one takes the cake and creams them all.
Death Proof (2007)
Fun proof, interest proof and boredom galore
You can say what you want about exploitation genre or about other ways to repackage trash and sell it as a product. It still amounts to outdated, worn out, faded and stinky garbage. If you are not a garbage collector of images into your brain, go waste your time on something else. Anything will do really. Because this will not! This is not even an attempt to make something appealing or artistic but rather, a heap of junk pile together by a shovel. I am sorry I even started to watch this movie and the only reason I stuck with this masochistic pleasure is so I can feel credible while writing about it! Even the plot is shallow far beyond the 'genre' it attempts to imitate.
Fireproof (2008)
2 on a regular scale. I guess 8 or 9 on religious inspirational
This is one of the best inspirational/spiritual movies I have seen. And I have only seen a few. So I guess it is actually OK to have such bad acting, blunt church messages enough for a couple of Sunday sermons etc. Both leads are totally not credible although the husband passes sometimes. The wife, the doctor and the parents are flat unidimensional characters. I think the thing that perplexed me the most is why on earth did they omit the extra character from the cast list:JHC - as "The ghost". His presence and effective acting was better than the entire cast... To be true, you have to admit: This is a religious movie. It preaches about family values and if you want to have them, you will understand what JC can do for you and that he alone and only he can do it for you.
