Thank God for Fast Forward
First off, I don't get why IMDb does not allow for ZERO marks. I bet there are other movies that deserve 0. Now... what can I say about the movie ... I'll give it one fair point for having decent visual effects. Nothing fancy (don't get your hopes high) but I've seen much worse. That was the only good thing about it. ... I could list the awful points but it'd just be a waste of time and energy cause I'd have to practically write down the entire movie. ...I believe my title says it all... Fast Forward really saved the day. I think I watched the entire thing in less than 15 minutes. It sucks THAT bad. ... Holly crap... IMDb wants me to type in 10 lines before I can submit the comment. THERE'S NOTHING MORE TO SAY ABOUT THIS PIECE OF JUNK MOVIE??? What am I supposed to write in 10 lines? Yeah okay I could say that even the most extreme visual effect in the movie is stolen directly from Troma movies. Okay, am I 10 lines yet? I don't wanna think about this crap movie anymore. Please just accept the review and let me go already! (oh BTW if you bought this on DVD, I hope you've got a Shredder ... you'll need it).
Avalon (2001)
Watching this without knowing anything about it.
Two things. 1. You have to be willing to excuse the cold feeling that the language creates. It's as if the characters in the movie do not feel what they say and as if they are not part of the scenes they are shooting. (spoiler) in the end of the film this does however seem appropriately incorporated as they indeed (SPOILER) do not feel and perhaps worse, are not part of what is going on. 2. This movie (spoiler) takes the concept that has been used in so many movies, dark city, matrix, 13th floor etc. and gives it (SPOILER) a double twist and, a not so happy ending like the aforementioned. (/end of spoiler).
The main character is somewhat believable, has no depth whatsoever, with other characters in the movie simply filling in the blanks. Specially that thief character, well, I still didnt quite understand his contribution to the film.
Keep an eye for Murphy. Perhaps he was underused in the movie or perhaps that is exactly why he makes you feel he should be used a bit more. (6/10)
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
Could live without it.
Note that I am a Helen and did understand all those minor points some of the foreign viewers may have missed. I was 100% negative when i was told to go watch this movie. My housemate watched it 3 times at the cinema and I only watched it as a rent dvd, which i didnt even rent. friend's treat. Well a few things about the movie, it does get on people's nerves at first with Toula saying all kinds of stupid things (and in the end if someone does not like where they are from i suppose they can just as easily migrate -just as a friend of mine did cause he was embarrased to be a Helen). On the other hand, the movie delivers some funny momments, the interest is entirely stolen by Toula's father who really plays 100% what it would be expected from him. Note (minor spoiler) the scene where the american parents go over to meet the hellenic family for the first time and they bring along a cake. I suppose it is the funniest moment of the movie, specially if you can understand hellenic.
well all in all i am giving this movie a 5. note this is the second time i am rating it, the first time i gave it a 2. I still believe there will be many who will enjoy this movie more than i did, specially people who are not preoccupied with the love for the country.
Equilibrium (2002)
Satisfied. To a degree.
I am purely negative when it comes to Christian Bale and I consider him purely untalented. To be honest i only got to know him in American Psycho, a movie where I felt like he was copying Cruise as good as he could. Watching some other movies, I can say poot Christian can not act. He has one character, his alter ego perhaps, which he brings in each movie he's asked to play in. About the movie? Well imagine that. Bale in fact fits in his role and delivers exactly what he's asked to deliver. I will not discuss whether this is because he finally learnt how to act or if it is because the role itself asked for what he can only do (which is what I personally believe anyhow) but still, he really does exceed anyone's expectations.
(spoiler) Taye once more plays the macho character who (SPOILER) will fall as in the case of the way of the gun. (/spoiler end) All in all the movie does not base itself on the performances of the actors although as i already said, Bale does deliver exactly what is expected from him, if not more. (minor spoiler) Bean? Well as in all his other movies...(/spoiler end) Characters? Well they dont really build up in front of you although Preston's character (Bale) is given a certain depth and an attempt is made to relate the viewer's with him. Didnt work with me but it's certainly there.
The movie has a smoothly fitting soundtrack to go with the action, some great action scenes which really give another meaning to the word action, fast pace, intense moves, and a very few meanings underneath the glossy hollywood feel perhaps. (spoiler) the last fighting scene in the movie will certainly be remembered as one of the most original as (SPOILER) instead of having people shooting each other -matrix- or what was even worse, shooting each other from an arm's distance -art of war- here, most effort is made to avoid being shot rather than shooting the opponent.(/spoiler end)
I gave this movie a rating of 7. I just watched it last night though and tonight I am going to watch it once more. Perhaps the second time will make me reconsider and come change a thing or two. But probably not. The movie manages beautifully to avoid the cult and the following of the matrix while still incorporating many ideas and techniques from it.
At the end of the day, you will come back and think about the movie, perhaps not because of the drama but certainly because you will find something therein to trigger your interest. (7/10)
Vampires: Los Muertos (2002)
Wasting 2 hours (minor spoilers)
Note there may be minor spoilers ahead. I watched this movie just yesterday and the only reason I took the time to visit Imdb for this film was to check whether the main vampire character was played by the same woman who played Frost's girlfriend in Blade. She was. Unfortunately, that was not the only similarity between the two films. There's a vampire hunter much like Blade going around hunting living dead, although this time he's white and the character is played by ... Jovi? Interesting. Nice haircut too, for a vampire slayer... You have a sidekick as well, a vampire daywalker, a vampire who wants to be a daywalker etc etc. The list of similarities goes on.
Now the movie was a tragedy. Can you even believe that Jovi, the vampire slayer goes around with a surfboard? one that opens up and inside he has all kinds of weapons for the immortals... Then again, we saw something like that in the new Bond movie as well. Oh well. All in all the movie was an attempt to become Blade in the place of Blade but, it failed tragically. Now that i think about it, my rating of 5 is far too great for such a movie.
The Prophecy (1995)
Commenting on the actors
Fallen angels and their struggle on earth for the discovery of the one worst soul ever that would lead the War in heaven. Walken is indeed one of my favourite male artists. Still, I think that even if I had never heard of him before, after this movie he would have become one of my favourites anyhow. In the role of Gabriel, Walken performs just amazingly, almost as if playing naturaly. Koteas gives a rather nice performance as the priest who lost his faith (with the carefully chosen name, Thomas), Madsen just manages to stay unnoticed under the names of Walken, Koteas, Mortensen and Stoltz and both Mortensen and Stoltz absolutely rock in their respective roles as Lucifer and Simon. If you've watched the other two parts of the trilogy and thought it sucked I wouldnt blame you. Do watch this one though and the fame will be restored.
King of New York (1990)
discussing the movie, the actors and director.
Another film in the classic Ferrara style. If you are not into his work you will probably not like this movie. Not because it is not a good film but because it has nothing to do with the rest of Hollywood productions. To be more precise, this must be the exact opposite of a typical John Woo film. The film is slow, with some great camera games (notice Walken's stare right into the camera when he's having the shower in the beginning of the movie), and some twisted scenes which I will not mention as I hate spoilers. Notice the names include actors like Fishburn, Snipes and Buscemi. Although they do play their parts to the most of their potential their roles are just too small. The entire movie focuses on the life of Frank White, masterly played by Christopher Walken. This movie is indeed a classic. Specially in the hands of Abel Ferrara, this movie is meant to be remembered.
Wishmaster 4: The Prophecy Fulfilled (2002)
Djinns, flames, swords and a disgrace of a movie.
A Djinn. A couple. A lawyer and... a hunter? Ok. I just came online now right I watched the movie so i could see what others had to say about this film and so that I could rate it. I noticed someone even liked this movie. Two thumbs up? I mean come on... This movie here makes Valentine look like a horror movie. Truth is I never watched the 3rd installment of this series of movies. Still, having seen the first one and the second one, this one here is at the very least... a disgrace to the horror genre. By the way, what happened to the Djinn? I just read in the third movie it was not the same as in the first two either. Why? I mean, the Djinn itself was the one and only reason to watch the movie. And now this? The comic character... If you happen to like horror movies I'd suggest you go watch something else. Rosemary's baby for example. This here is a good one to watch right after the new Scooby doo movie. And by the way, special effects are in fact a let down. And Djinn's voice? The one in the first two movies? Gone. This is one of those movies that should have never been shot.
Sentinels of Darkness (2002)
Vampires, killers, hunted books. A B-Movie.
I just noticed the movie is a 2002 production. If you watch the movie you will get the impression it was filmed around the late 80's.
A low budget production where you start at the begining and when you reach the end you have no idea what it is you just watched. Still it's one of those cult movies with Eileen Daly. An instant classic if you like nonsense movies. I loved it. If you are not one of those guys though, turn your attention to something that resembles a movie a little more. Something like Finding Forrester. This one will let you down for sure. Vampires, hired guns, a family, some guy reading a book, the book ... Really I didnt get much of the movie. Still, movies like that do not exist for their moral teachings. They are simply there to praise the league of B-Movies. Honestly, if I werent a die hard fan of B-Movies this one here would have never gotten anything greater than '1'. (by the way, where is Nena in the film? I have difficulty noticing her anywhere in the movie)
